4K to 1080p Video Converter
Convert 4K to 1080p right in your browser. ProMedia scales the short side of each video to 1,080 pixels, so landscape footage becomes 1920×1080 and vertical phone clips 1080×1920, with the frame rate and sound unchanged. Drop a whole shoot from your phone, drone or action camera; nothing is uploaded, and files that are already 1080p or smaller are left as they are.

Settings explained
- Quality
- Only used when a stream has to be re-encoded. Compatible streams are copied with no quality loss.
- Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
- Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
- Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
- FFmpeg (when needed)
- Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.
4K vs 1080p: what changes when you downscale
1080p has exactly a quarter of the pixels of 4K UHD: 1920×1080 is 2,073,600 pixels against 8,294,400. Downscaling keeps everything else about the clip, so the result plays more easily, edits faster and takes far less space.
| 4K UHD (source) | 1080p (result) | |
|---|---|---|
| Frame size (landscape) | 3840×2160 | 1920×1080 |
| Pixels per frame | 8,294,400 | 2,073,600 (25%) |
| Frame rate | 24, 30, 60 fps… | Unchanged: 60 fps stays 60 fps |
| Video codec | Often HEVC on phones and drones | H.264 (VP9 for WebM files) |
| Sound | As recorded | Copied without re-encoding |
| Container | MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM | The same as the source |
What size will my 4K video become?
The converter sets the shorter side to 1,080 pixels and scales the longer side to match, so nothing is cropped or stretched. Cameras that record taller 4:3 frames or wider cinema 4K keep their shape.
| Source | Typical camera | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 3840×2160 (UHD, 16:9) | Phones, drones, mirrorless cameras | 1920×1080 |
| 2160×3840 (vertical UHD) | Phone held upright | 1080×1920 |
| 4096×2160 (DCI 4K) | Cinema and some action cameras | 2048×1080 |
| 3840×2880 (4:3) | Drones and action cameras in 4:3 mode | 1440×1080 |
| 1920×1080 or smaller | Already HD | Unchanged, copied without re-encoding |
Does downscaling 4K to 1080p look better than shooting in 1080p?
Usually it looks a little cleaner. Every 1080p pixel is computed from four 4K pixels, which averages out some sensor noise and keeps edges crisp. That is why many creators film in 4K and deliver in 1080p.
The file is re-encoded once at the Quality you pick, so start from the original camera file rather than a copy that was already compressed for chat apps. HDR footage is saved as standard H.264, and its HDR look is not guaranteed to survive, so convert one clip and check it on the screen you will watch on before doing a whole shoot.
Why convert 4K to 1080p
- Smooth editing on an older computer. 1080p H.264 decodes far more easily than 4K HEVC, so timelines stop stuttering.
- Smaller uploads and backups. A quarter of the pixels needs much less data at the same visual quality; the estimate shows the expected size before you start.
- Plays everywhere. H.264 1080p opens on older TVs, laptops and phones that refuse 4K HEVC.
- Private and offline. Holiday footage and client shoots never leave your device, and the page keeps working without a connection after the first visit.
Downscale 4K video on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac
This 4K to 1080p converter works in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox. On a phone, short clips are fine; long 4K recordings convert faster on a computer.
iPhone
Pick clips from Photo Library in Safari. To record in 1080p from now on, change Settings → Camera → Record Video.
Android
Open this page in Chrome and select the clips from your gallery. The 1080p files are saved to Downloads.
Windows
Drag a folder of 4K files from File Explorer into Chrome or Edge. Hardware encoding through your graphics chip keeps the batch moving.
Mac
Drag clips from Finder or Photos into Safari or Chrome. iPhone MOV files stay MOV, now with H.264 video.
Tips & troubleshooting
Need an exact file size, such as 25 MB for email? Convert to 1080p here, then use the video compressor with a target size.
For social frames such as 1080×1920 with a blurred background, use Resize Video instead.
Want to keep 4K but make it play on Windows or older TVs? Convert HEVC to H.264 without changing the resolution.
Shot at 60 fps but only need 30? The video encoder changes the frame rate and resolution in one pass.
Cut the parts you do not need with the video trimmer first; it is lossless and leaves less to convert.
4K to 1080p Converter FAQ
How much smaller is 1080p than 4K?
1080p has a quarter of the pixels of 4K UHD (2.07 million against 8.29 million per frame). The file usually shrinks a lot, but the exact size depends on the footage and the Quality setting; the estimate under the options shows it before you convert.
Does 4K to 1080p keep 60fps?
Yes. The frame rate is not touched: 60 fps footage comes out at 60 fps, 24 fps at 24 fps. Only the frame size changes. To lower the frame rate as well, use the video encoder.
Does downscaling 4K to 1080p lose quality?
You lose resolution by design, but on a 1080p screen or a phone the result looks as sharp as the original, often cleaner. The video is encoded once; choose Best quality if you will edit it further.
What happens if I add a video that is already 1080p?
It is copied unchanged. This page only shrinks videos, so a 1080p or 720p file is never enlarged or re-encoded.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Videos are read in chunks straight from disk, so multi-gigabyte files work on desktop computers; phones are limited by their memory. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
