AI Image Upscaler & Photo Enhancer
AIThis image upscaler enlarges photos 2× or 4× with Swin2SR, a super-resolution AI model that runs in your browser. Instead of stretching pixels, it rebuilds sharp edges and fine texture, and cleans up noise and JPEG blocks along the way. It is free, has no credits or watermark, and your photos are never uploaded.

How to upscale an image
Step 1: Drop one or more images on the box above: JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF and more.
Step 2: Choose 2× or 4×, and what the image is: Photos & JPGs or Clean art & renders.
Step 3: Press Upscale and confirm the one-time model download. Without WebGPU, the tool shows a time estimate and asks before a long job.
Step 4: Compare before and after, then download the enlarged image as PNG, or as JPG or WebP from Advanced settings.

Settings explained
- Best for
- Photos & JPGs: Real-world model: cleans noise, blur and JPEG blocks
- Clean art & renders: Classical model: crisp lines, keeps fine texture
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Vision model
- A compact computer-vision model runs locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to an AI service.
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
Photos & JPGs or Clean art: which upscaling mode?
Pick Photos & JPGs for camera photos, screenshots of photos, old scans and anything compressed: its model was trained on real-world damage such as noise, blur and JPEG blocks, and removes them while enlarging. Pick Clean art & renders for illustrations, logos, game art and 3D renders, where you want crisp lines and texture kept exactly.
| Mode | Model | Download (once) | How 2× and 4× are made |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos & JPGs | Swin2SR real-world ×4 | 53 MB | 4× in one pass; 2× is made at 4× and then halved with high-quality filtering |
| Clean art & renders | Swin2SR classical ×2 | 54 MB | 2× in one pass; 4× is two 2× passes |
What is image upscaling?
Image upscaling means increasing an image’s resolution, for example from 1000×750 to 2000×1500 pixels. Ordinary resizing fills the new pixels by averaging their neighbours, which makes edges soft and blocky. AI upscaling, also called super-resolution, uses a model trained on pairs of small and large images to predict the missing detail, so edges stay sharp and textures such as hair, fabric or leaves look plausible.
Swin2SR is a transformer model. ProMedia runs it on overlapping tiles of the image and blends the seams, which keeps memory use low enough for a browser.
How long does upscaling take?
Time depends on the number of tiles and whether your browser has WebGPU, which runs the model on the graphics chip. Without it the model runs on the CPU, several times slower; the tool then shows its estimate and asks before starting anything over a minute and a half. These are the tool’s own estimates for Photos & JPGs mode, after the model is downloaded:
| Image | 2×, WebGPU | 2×, CPU | 4×, WebGPU | 4×, CPU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 640×480 | 13 s | 3 min | 13 s | 3 min |
| 1024×768 | 44 s | 6 min | 44 s | 6 min |
| 1920×1080 | 2 min | 14 min | 2 min | 14 min |
| 2000×1500 | 2 min | 21 min | 2 min | 21 min |
| 4000×3000 | 7 min | 66 min | Too large | Too large |
How to increase image resolution without losing quality
Upscaled images are saved as PNG by default, so nothing is lost to compression on the way out. The result can be up to 48 megapixels: that allows 2× on images up to about 12 megapixels (4000×3000) and 4× on images up to 3 megapixels (2000×1500). Larger photos get a message with the size to resize to first.
If you only need an exact pixel size for a form or a website, and not more detail, a normal image resizer is instant. Use the upscaler when the image must look sharp at its new size: printing, cropping into a small part of a photo, or reusing an old low-resolution picture.
Does AI upscaling fix blurry images?
Partly. The Photos & JPGs model was trained on blurred, noisy and compressed images, so mild softness, grain and JPEG blocks improve noticeably. It cannot recover information that was never in the picture: a face that is a few pixels wide, unreadable text or a licence plate will not become readable, and heavy motion blur or an out-of-focus shot stays blurred. The model invents believable texture, not the true original detail.
- Improves: small web images, old phone photos, compressed screenshots, scanned prints, renders exported too small.
- Limited: strong motion blur, missed focus, faces and text only a few pixels across.
Upscale images on iPhone, Android, Mac or Windows
The upscaler runs in any modern browser. Speed is what differs: a computer with WebGPU is the fastest place to upscale.
Mac
Chrome and Edge use WebGPU on Macs with Apple silicon, so a 1080p photo at 2× takes under two minutes by the tool’s estimate. Drag images from Finder or Photos.
Windows 10 and 11
Chrome and Edge use WebGPU on most modern graphics cards. Drag a folder of images in; each is enlarged in turn.
iPhone and iPad
It works in Safari, but phones are slower and have less memory. Choose 2× and smaller images, or use a computer for large batches.
Android
Open the page in Chrome and pick photos from your gallery. Keep the screen on during long jobs.
Is this image upscaler safe?
- No upload. Photos are enlarged on your device; nothing is sent to a server, so private and client images stay private.
- No account, credits or watermark, and no limit on the number of images.
- One small download. The model is 53 MB and stays in your browser’s cache for offline use.
Tips & troubleshooting
Crop first, then upscale: enlarging only the part you need is faster and gives more detail where it matters. Use crop image.
Upscaling a cutout? Remove the background with remove background first and keep PNG output.
Need a sharper still from a video? Grab the frame with screenshot from video, then upscale it here.
For web use, convert the big PNG to a smaller file afterwards with the image compressor.
Image Upscaler (2× / 4×) FAQ
How do I upscale an image without losing quality?
Use the AI upscaler rather than plain resizing, choose Photos & JPGs for photos, and keep the default PNG output so the result is not compressed again. The model rebuilds edges and texture at the new size, and the file is saved losslessly.
What is image upscaling?
Increasing an image’s pixel dimensions. Plain upscaling stretches the existing pixels and looks soft; AI upscaling, or super-resolution, predicts the missing detail with a trained model, so the larger image stays sharp.
How do I increase image resolution?
Drop the image here and choose 2× or 4×. A 1000×750 photo becomes 2000×1500 or 4000×3000 pixels. The result can be up to 48 megapixels; for a specific smaller size without added detail, use the image resizer instead.
Is AI upscaling better than normal resizing?
For enlarging, yes. Normal resizing interpolates between pixels, which blurs edges and shows JPEG blocks. AI upscaling sharpens edges, adds plausible texture and removes compression artefacts. For making images smaller, normal resizing is all you need.
Does AI upscaling fix blurry images?
It improves mild blur, noise and compression, because the photo model was trained on exactly that kind of damage. It cannot restore detail that was never captured, so heavy motion blur, missed focus and tiny unreadable text stay unreadable.
Is the image upscaler safe to use?
Yes. Your images are processed by your own browser and never uploaded. The only download is the open Swin2SR model from the Hugging Face CDN, once, after you confirm, and it is then cached for offline use.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Very large photos can exceed what a phone browser can handle: Safari on iPhone and iPad lets a web page edit images of up to about 16 megapixels. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
