GIF to MP4 Converter

Convert GIF to MP4 when an app will not take a GIF or the file is simply too big. The same animation as an H.264 video is usually a fraction of the size, every frame keeps its own timing, and a short loop can repeat up to 10 times to make a longer clip. Conversion happens in your browser, so your GIFs are never uploaded.

How to convert a GIF to MP4

  1. Step 1: Drop one or more GIFs on the box above.

  2. Step 2: Set Repeat if the animation is short; 3× turns a 2-second loop into a 6-second video.

  3. Step 3: Leave Save as on MP4, or pick WebM. Under Advanced settings you can also set the Background for transparency and the Quality.

  4. Step 4: Press Convert. Each GIF becomes its own video; save them singly or grab every one in a single ZIP.

How it runs

Hardware video engine
Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.

GIF vs MP4 vs WebM: which one should you post?

Post an MP4 almost everywhere a video is accepted: it is smaller than the GIF, keeps far more colour and plays on every phone and social app. Keep the GIF only where images are expected, such as emoji, email and older forums. WebM suits websites and Discord, but Apple apps and many editors prefer MP4.

What is a GIF file?

A GIF file is an image in the Graphics Interchange Format, created by CompuServe in 1987. The 1989 revision, GIF89a, added frame delays and transparency, which is what makes animated GIFs possible. Each frame is limited to a palette of 256 colours and compressed losslessly with LZW.

Those 1980s limits are why GIFs are big and slightly grainy, and why platforms that care about video quality, Instagram among them, do not take GIF uploads at all. Turning a GIF into a video fixes both problems.

How to post a GIF on Instagram

Instagram accepts video files, not GIF uploads, so convert the GIF to MP4 first and post it like any other video or Reel. Very short loops play once and end before anyone notices, so use Repeat to make the clip last several seconds.

  • Convert here with Save as MP4 and Repeat set to 3 or more.
  • Need a vertical or square frame? Run the MP4 through resize video to fit 9:16 or 1:1 without stretching it.
  • Upload the MP4 from your camera roll in the Instagram app.

Make a short GIF loop into a longer video

The Repeat slider plays the whole animation up to 10 times in a row inside one video, with every frame keeping its original delay. Use it for Instagram and TikTok, for background loops in presentations, or anywhere a player will not loop the video by itself. Each repeat adds to the file size, but much less than the GIF would.

Video length for each Repeat setting
GIF length1×3×5×10×
1 s1 s3 s5 s10 s
1.5 s1.5 s4.5 s7.5 s15 s
2 s2 s6 s10 s20 s
3 s3 s9 s15 s30 s
5 s5 s15 s25 s50 s
A single-frame (still) GIF becomes 1 second of video per repeat.

Can an MP4 keep a GIF’s transparent background?

No. H.264 video has no transparency, so every transparent pixel is filled with the Background for transparency colour under Advanced settings, black by default. Pick the colour of the page or post where the video will appear, and the edges will blend in.

If you need real transparency, keep the GIF, or convert it with GIF to WebP: animated WebP keeps transparent pixels and is usually smaller than the GIF.

What happens to frame timing and odd sizes

A GIF to MP4 converter has to deal with a few GIF quirks. This is how ProMedia handles each one, so the video plays exactly as the GIF did in your browser:

GIF quirks and what the video does
In the GIFIn the MP4 or WebM
Frames with different delaysEach frame keeps its own duration; nothing is resampled to a fixed rate
Delays of 0 or 10 ms (shown as 100 ms by browsers)Played at 100 ms, matching what you saw
Odd width or height, such as 301×199Padded by one pixel in the background colour (H.264 needs even sizes); never stretched
A single frameShown for 1 second per repeat
Loop countIgnored; use Repeat to bake loops into the video

Turn a GIF into a video on iPhone, Android or a computer

The converter runs in the browser, so there is no app to install on any device.

iPhone and iPad

In Safari, tap the drop zone and pick the GIF from Photos or Files. The MP4 is saved to Files; share it and choose Save Video to add it to your camera roll for Instagram or TikTok.

Android

In Chrome, tap the drop zone and choose the GIF. The MP4 lands in Downloads and shows up in your gallery, ready to post.

Windows, Mac and Linux

Select all the GIFs in File Explorer or Finder (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A) and drag them onto the page together. Each one converts in turn and you can download them all as a single ZIP.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Converting a GIF only to make it smaller for a chat that needs a GIF? Use the GIF compressor instead; an MP4 is not a GIF.

  • Want the reverse, a GIF from a clip? The video to GIF converter trims and sizes it for you.

  • For the sharpest result on large GIFs, set Quality to Best under Advanced settings; the video is a little bigger but cleaner.

  • Need a longer loop than 10 repeats? Convert with Repeat 10, then use loop video on the MP4.

GIF to MP4 Converter FAQ

How do I post a GIF on Instagram?

Instagram does not accept GIF uploads, so convert the GIF to MP4 here, set Repeat so it lasts several seconds, save the video to your phone and post it as a normal video or Reel.

How do I turn a GIF into a video?

Drop the GIF onto the converter on this page, leave Save as on MP4 (or pick WebM), set how many times the animation should repeat and press Convert. The video is created in your browser and downloads right away.

GIF vs MP4: which is smaller?

MP4, almost always. In our tests the MP4 was 69% and 84% smaller than the GIF at Balanced quality, because video codecs store only the changes between frames and are not limited to 256 colours.

Can an MP4 keep a GIF’s transparent background?

No. MP4 video has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose under Advanced settings. For real transparency, keep the GIF or convert it to animated WebP.

How do I make a short GIF loop into a longer video?

Use the Repeat slider. It plays the animation up to 10 times in a row inside one video, so a 1.5-second GIF at 10× becomes a 15-second MP4, with every frame keeping its timing.

Can I convert many GIFs to MP4 at once?

Yes. Drop as many GIFs as you like; each is converted in turn with the same settings and you can download them all as one ZIP. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no batch limit or queue.
