MP4 to GIF Converter

Convert MP4 to GIF without installing anything: open the MP4 from your phone, camera or screen recorder, select a few seconds and choose how smooth and how wide the GIF should be. Your browser decodes the H.264 or HEVC video on your own device, a live estimate shows the GIF’s size before you export, and the file is never uploaded.

Good to know

Settings explained

Frame rate
Frames per second. 10–15 fps keeps GIFs small and still smooth.
Quality
Best quality gives every frame its own palette and keeps finer motion detail, which makes larger files.
  • Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
  • Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
  • Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
Colours
Fewer colours, smaller file.
Dithering
Smooths gradients at the cost of a slightly larger file.

How it runs

Hardware video engine
Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.

MP4 vs GIF: why the GIF comes out bigger

An MP4 is almost always smaller than a GIF of the same clip. Video codecs store only what changes between frames, motion included, in millions of colours; GIF stores each frame as a 256-colour picture. You convert MP4 to GIF for where a GIF plays, not to save space.

What is an MP4 file?

An MP4 file is a video in the MPEG-4 Part 14 container, standardised as ISO/IEC 14496-14. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, and it is what Android phones, most cameras, screen recorders and video downloads produce. An .m4v file is Apple’s variant of the same container, and this page opens it the same way.

The container decides little about the GIF. What matters is the video codec inside: H.264 decodes in every browser, while HEVC needs a browser and device that support it. When yours does not, ProMedia hands the clip to its FFmpeg engine, which is slower but produces the same GIF. iPhone clips usually arrive as .mov; MOV to GIF covers those.

Can you convert MP4 to GIF without losing quality?

Not completely. GIF can show at most 256 colours per frame, so smooth gradients and skin tones always lose some precision, and the frame rate is capped at 25 fps here. What you can control is everything else: keep the width at Original, choose Best quality and leave dithering on. The three quality modes differ in how they build palettes and how small a change between frames they keep:

MP4 to GIF quality modes
QualityPaletteSmallest change keptUse it for
FasterOne palette for the whole clip, sampled from about 12 framesDifferences above 10 of 255 levelsQuick previews and the smallest files
Balanced (default)Same shared paletteAbove 6 of 255 levelsMost clips
BestA new palette for every frame, built from the pixels that changedAbove 3 of 255 levelsFaces, gradients, product shots
Smaller changes are treated as “unchanged” and cost nothing to store, which is where most of the size difference comes from.

How to make the GIF smaller than the MP4 settings suggest

Every setting has a predictable effect, so you can trade quality for size on purpose. For a 5-second clip with average motion, the converter estimates about 2.2 MB at its defaults. This is how each change moves that number:

Estimated size of a 5-second MP4 clip as a GIF
Change from the defaultsEstimated GIF size
Defaults: 480 px, 15 fps, Balanced2.2 MB
10 fps instead of 151.5 MB
320 px instead of 4801.0 MB
320 px and 10 fps677 KB
3 seconds instead of 51.3 MB
64 colours (Advanced)2.0 MB
Best quality2.7 MB
Estimates from the converter’s size model for a 16:9 clip. Measured example: a 3-second, 640×360 test clip (320 KB as MP4) became a 484 KB GIF at the defaults, 448 KB at Faster, 566 KB at Best and 171 KB at 320 px and 10 fps.

Convert MP4 to GIF on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone

This MP4 to GIF converter runs inside the browser, so the steps are the same everywhere. Here is what to expect on each system, including the built-in tools people try first.

Windows 10 and 11

Drag the MP4 from File Explorer into Chrome, Edge or Firefox and press Create GIF. The GIF lands in Downloads, and there is nothing to install or update.

Mac

Drag the MP4 from Finder into Safari or Chrome. QuickTime Player can trim and export video but not GIF.

Android

Open the page in Chrome, tap the drop zone and pick the MP4 from your gallery or Downloads. The GIF is saved to Downloads.

iPhone and iPad

In Safari, tap the drop zone, then Choose File for MP4s in Files or Photo Library for camera videos. Save the GIF from Files to Photos with Share → Save Image.

What about VLC?

VLC plays MP4 files but has no GIF output in its Convert/Save menu; its scene filter only saves still images. Use VLC to find the timestamps, then convert here.

Why convert MP4 to GIF with ProMedia

  • The file stays on your device. The MP4 is read from disk and decoded locally, so private recordings never reach a server and large files do not have to upload first.
  • You see the size first. The estimate updates with each setting, and the result card confirms frames, frame rate and length.
  • No watermark, no sign-up, no queue. Make as many GIFs as you like.
  • Smart storage. Pixels that do not change are stored as transparent and duplicate frames are merged, which keeps MP4 screen recordings especially small.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Posting in Discord? A free account can upload 20 MB, but emoji must stay under 256 KB; compress the GIF for Discord to hit the right limit.

  • Converting a clip from any other format, such as MKV or AVI? Use the general video to GIF converter; it reads almost every format.

  • Add a caption afterwards with add text to GIF, or cut away black bars with crop GIF.

  • If the GIF looks banded, switch on Best quality or raise Colours back to 256 under Advanced settings.

MP4 to GIF Converter FAQ

How do I convert MP4 to GIF on Windows?

Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, drag the MP4 from File Explorer onto the converter, select the part you want and press Create GIF. Nothing needs installing, and the GIF is saved to your Downloads folder.

How do I convert MP4 to GIF without losing quality?

Some loss is unavoidable because a GIF frame holds at most 256 colours. To keep as much as possible, set Width to Original, choose Best quality, leave dithering on and keep the selection short so the file stays usable.

Can VLC convert MP4 to GIF?

Not directly. VLC’s Convert/Save options cover video and audio formats but not animated GIF, and its scene filter only exports still frames. Convert the MP4 here instead; it runs in the browser and needs no install.

How do I convert MP4 to GIF on a Mac?

QuickTime Player has no GIF export, so open this page in Safari or Chrome, drag the MP4 from Finder onto the converter and press Create GIF. Apple’s Shortcuts app also has a Make GIF action for quick, settings-free conversions.

Why is my GIF bigger than the MP4?

Because MP4 uses a video codec that stores only the changes between frames and tracks motion, while GIF stores each frame as a 256-colour picture. Lower the width or frame rate, shorten the clip, or use the GIF compressor to reach a size.

Does the GIF keep the MP4’s sound?

No. GIF has no audio, so the sound track is left out. If you need sound, keep the MP4 and share it as a video instead.
