Video Compressor – Reduce Video Size to Any MB
This free video compressor shrinks a video to the exact size you type, such as 25 MB for Gmail, or by a percentage. ProMedia works out the bitrate, lowers the resolution only when the size really needs it and encodes on your graphics chip. You see the estimated output size before anything starts, and the video never leaves your device.

Settings explained
- Compress by
- Target size: Hit an exact MB limit
- Percentage: Shrink by a share
- Quality: Pick a look, size follows
- Target size
- The result lands just under this size. Discord free: 20 MB · WhatsApp: 16 MB · Gmail: 25 MB.
- Reduce size by
- 50% turns a 100 MB video into about 50 MB.
- Quality
- Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
- Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
- Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
- Max resolution
- Automatic steps the resolution down only when the bitrate would get too low — a smaller sharp picture beats a big blocky one.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
- FFmpeg (when needed)
- Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.

How long a video fits in 10, 25 or 50 MB
File size is bitrate × duration, so the length of your clip decides how sharp it can be at a given size. This table shows the longest clip that still keeps each resolution with ProMedia’s default settings. Longer clips still fit: the compressor steps the resolution down instead of making the picture blocky.
| Size limit | 1080p | 720p | 480p |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 MB (forms and portals) | 33 s | 1 min 17 s | 2 min 35 s |
| WhatsApp · 16 MB | 54 s | 2 min 03 s | 4 min 08 s |
| Discord free · 20 MB | 1 min 07 s | 2 min 34 s | 5 min 10 s |
| Gmail · 25 MB | 1 min 24 s | 3 min 13 s | 6 min 27 s |
| Discord Nitro Basic · 50 MB | 2 min 47 s | 6 min 26 s | 12 min 54 s |
| 100 MB | 5 min 34 s | 12 min 51 s | 25 min 48 s |
The three ways to compress a video
This video compressor has three modes; pick the one that matches the job. All three can be combined with a maximum resolution, another codec or a lower frame rate under Advanced settings.
Target size (MB)
For hard limits such as email, chat apps and upload forms. ProMedia plans the bitrate to land about 4% under your number, measures the result and runs a corrective pass if it is over, so the file never bounces.
Percentage
For “make it smaller” jobs without a fixed limit. 50% turns a 100 MB video into about 50 MB. The target is approximate, within a few percent.
Quality
For archives and sharing where the look matters more than the number. Faster, Balanced and Best spend at most about 45%, 60% or 80% of the original video bitrate.
H.264 vs HEVC vs AV1: which codec gives the smallest file?
The codec is the method used to compress the picture. Newer codecs reach the same quality with fewer bits, but older phones, TVs and editors may not play them. If your browser cannot encode the codec you pick, ProMedia falls back to the next one that works.
| Codec | Size at the same quality | Plays on | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 (AVC) | Baseline | Practically every phone, browser, TV and editor | You do not know what the viewer uses (default) |
| HEVC (H.265) | About 35% smaller | iPhone, Mac, most recent Android phones; Windows needs the HEVC extension | Sending to Apple devices or archiving |
| AV1 | About 50% smaller | Recent Chrome, Firefox and Android, newer GPUs | Smallest file for modern devices; slowest to encode |
| VP9 | About 35% smaller | Browsers and Android; saved as WebM | Web pages that serve WebM |
Why compress videos here instead of an upload site
- You see the size first. The estimate is shown before encoding, so you know a 4-minute clip will not look good at 10 MB before you wait for it.
- It does not make files bigger. Target size and percentage aim below the original, Quality caps the bitrate below the original’s, and an MP4 that is already H.264 and small enough is handed back untouched.
- Resolution drops only when needed. Automatic keeps your resolution while the bitrate allows it and steps down to 720p or 480p only when a sharp smaller picture beats a blocky big one.
- No upload, no size cap, no watermark. Videos are read from your disk in chunks and encoded with your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs. Multi-gigabyte files work on a computer, and batches finish one after another.
Compress a video on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac
The compressor runs in the browser, so you do not need an app. The steps above are the same on every device; only picking and saving files differs.
iPhone and iPad
Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone and choose Photo Library or Choose Files. Save the result to Files or share it straight to the app you are sending it with.
Android
In Chrome, tap the drop zone and pick the clip from your gallery or files. The compressed MP4 is saved to Downloads.
Windows
Drag the files from File Explorer into Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Hardware encoding through your graphics card keeps long clips fast.
Mac
Drag the files from Finder or Photos into Safari or Chrome. HEVC output plays natively on every recent Mac and iPhone.
Compressing for a specific app?
These presets fill in the right limit for you and explain the rules of each platform:
- Compress a video for Discord: 20 MB on free accounts, 50 MB on Nitro Basic and 500 MB on Nitro.
- Compress a video for WhatsApp: under the 16 MB media limit at a sharp 720p.
- Compress a video for email: 25 MB for Gmail and Yahoo, 20 MB for Outlook.
- Compress a video to 10MB: for job portals, college forms and older apps that cap uploads at 10 MB.
Tips & troubleshooting
Trim first. Every second you cut gives the rest of the clip more bitrate, so use the video trimmer before compressing a long recording.
Speech or screen recordings? Lower Audio to 64 kbps, or choose Remove audio for silent clips. Each 32 kbps saved goes back to the picture.
Recorded at 60 fps? Set Frame rate to 30 under Advanced settings. Fewer frames per second means more bits for each frame.
Always compress from the original. Compressing an already compressed file again adds new artefacts on top of the old ones.
Need to plan an exact bitrate or check a size before recording? The video bitrate calculator does the maths.
Video Compressor FAQ
How does target-size compression work?
ProMedia divides your target size by the video length to get a bitrate budget, reserves a little for audio and the container, and encodes at that bitrate. If the budget is too thin for the current resolution, it steps down to 720p, 480p or lower so the picture stays clean, and it checks the finished file so it never goes over.
How do I compress a video without losing quality?
Every compressor removes some detail; the goal is to remove what you will not notice. Use Quality → Best or a larger target size, keep the resolution, and choose HEVC if the people watching use iPhones or recent devices. Trimming unneeded parts saves far more space than squeezing the picture.
Why is the result slightly smaller than my target?
The encoder aims about 4% under your number so the file never overshoots a hard limit such as an upload cap. Sizes use the strict reading of a megabyte (1,000,000 bytes), so some apps show the result a little lower still.
How small can a video get?
There is a floor. As the budget shrinks, Automatic drops the picture to 360p, 240p and finally 144p; if a target leaves less than about 60 kbps for the video, the compressor stops and tells you the smallest size that will work. Trimming the clip or removing the audio frees up the most room.
Can you compress a video twice?
You can, but each pass loses a little more detail, so the second result looks worse than compressing the original once to the smaller size. If a file is still too big, go back to the original and type the lower target.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Videos are read in chunks straight from disk, so multi-gigabyte files work on desktop computers; phones are limited by their memory. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
Is your video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your video is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
