Settings explained
- Model
- Quality: Any subject · 44–115 MB, fastest with WebGPU
- Fast: Portraits only · ≈ 7 MB
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Segmentation model
- An open segmentation model separates the subject from the background on your device. It downloads once after you confirm its size.
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
Quality or Fast: which background remover model?
Use Quality unless every photo is a portrait of a person. It recognises any subject, from shoes to dogs to glassware, and traces hair and fine edges more closely. Fast is a much smaller download tuned for people, useful on phones and for headshots. Which Quality build you get depends on your graphics chip.
| Model | Download (once) | Best for | Runs on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality: BiRefNet Lite | 115 MB | Any subject, finest edges | GPUs with WebGPU, fp16 and enough storage buffers |
| Quality: ormbg | 88 MB | Any subject | Other GPUs with WebGPU and fp16 |
| Quality: ormbg (CPU build) | 44 MB | Any subject; a few seconds slower per photo | Browsers without WebGPU fp16 |
| Fast: MODNet | 7 MB | Portraits and people only | Any browser |
What is a transparent PNG?
A transparent PNG is an image with an alpha channel: besides colour, every pixel stores how see-through it is. Where the background was, the pixels are fully transparent, so the cutout sits on any website, slide or design without a white box around it. Soft edges such as hair get partly transparent pixels, which is what makes a cutout look natural.
PNG and WebP keep transparency; JPG cannot, so a transparent cutout saved as JPG gets a white background.
Can you remove a background without losing quality?
Yes. The AI only decides which pixels belong to the subject; the solid parts of your subject keep their original pixels, and PNG output adds no compression loss. To find the edge it looks at a copy of up to 2,048 pixels on the long side, then the mask is scaled to your photo’s full resolution. Faint halos are trimmed, and the old background’s colour is removed from soft edges such as hair, so a subject shot against green does not keep a green fringe.
Edge softness (Advanced settings, 0–10 px) blurs the edge of the mask slightly for a gentler blend; 1 px is the default.
| Background | Result | Save as |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent | The subject on a see-through background | PNG (default) or WebP; JPG turns it white |
| Colour | The subject on any solid colour, white by default | PNG, WebP or JPG |
| Image | The subject on your own photo, scaled to fill the frame | PNG, WebP or JPG |
| Blur | The original background, blurred behind a sharp subject | PNG, WebP or JPG |
How to remove a white background from an image
For photos, white is just another background: the AI looks for the subject, not for a colour, so a product shot on white comes out as a clean transparent PNG. Choose Quality, keep Transparent and save as PNG.
Flat graphics are different. Logos, line art and signatures on white have no “subject” in the photographic sense, and thin strokes or letters can be missed. Check the result at full size; for scanned signatures, a crop and a higher-contrast scan help more than a different model.
What people use a background remover for
- Product photos. Marketplace and shop listings on a clean white or colour background, a whole folder at a time.
- Profile pictures and headshots. Swap a messy room for a colour, then make it round with circle crop.
- Passport and ID photos. The passport photo maker handles the official sizes and plain backgrounds.
- Stickers and emoji. Transparent PNGs for chat apps; Discord emoji must be under 256 KB, so shrink them with compress image to KB.
- Thumbnails and slides. Put the cutout over any design without a box around it.
Remove background on iPhone, Android, Mac or Windows
This page works the same in any modern browser. Some systems also have a quick built-in option, which is fine for a single photo.
iPhone and iPad
In Photos, touch and hold the subject to lift it and copy it out. For a saved PNG, a colour background or a batch, open this page in Safari and pick photos from the library.
Android
Open the page in Chrome and pick photos from the gallery. Fast is a light download for phones; Quality works too and handles products and pets better.
Mac
Finder’s Remove Background quick action handles single images on recent macOS. Use this page for new backgrounds, blur, WebP output or many photos at once.
Windows 10 and 11
Paint in Windows 11 has a Remove background button for one image. Drag a folder of photos into Chrome or Edge here for a batch with consistent results.
Why remove backgrounds with ProMedia
- Full resolution, free. No credits, no “HD download” paywall, no watermark.
- Private. Your photos never leave the device, which matters for people, children and unreleased products.
- Batch. Drop dozens of photos; each is processed in turn and you download them together.
- Offline after the first model download.
Tips & troubleshooting
A subject that blends into its background (a white cup on a white table) is the hardest case. Shoot it on a contrasting backdrop if you can.
If the Fast model says no subject was found, switch to Quality: Fast is trained on people only.
Need the cutout bigger? Enlarge it afterwards with the image upscaler; PNG keeps the transparency.
Want to erase one object rather than the whole background? Paint over it with remove object from photo.
For a video, try the video background remover, which replaces the background behind people.
Background Remover FAQ
How do I remove the background from an image?
Drop the photo here, keep the Quality model and the Transparent background, and press Remove. After the one-time model download, the AI finds the subject on your device and you download a transparent PNG at the photo’s full resolution.
Can I remove a background without losing quality?
Yes. The solid parts of the subject keep their exact pixels and the output has the same resolution as your photo. Only the mask is computed by the AI, with clean-up of halos and colour fringes at the edges. Save as PNG to avoid any compression.
How do I make a transparent background?
Choose Transparent as the background and save as PNG or WebP. Both formats store transparency. JPG does not, so a JPG export puts the subject on white instead.
What is the best background remover?
It depends on the photo and on where you are willing to send it. This one gives full-resolution results for free, handles batches, and never uploads your images. Use Quality for products, pets and hair; Fast for simple portraits.
Can I remove the background from a video?
Not on this page, which works on photos. The video background remover (Beta) blurs or replaces the background behind people in a video; with a green screen, remove green screen from video gives cleaner edges.
What gets downloaded, and is my photo uploaded?
Your photos are never uploaded. The only download is the AI model, once, from the Hugging Face CDN after you confirm its size; it stays in your browser’s cache, so it also works offline.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Very large photos can exceed what a phone browser can handle: Safari on iPhone and iPad lets a web page edit images of up to about 16 megapixels. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
