MP4 to MP3 Converter

Convert MP4 to MP3 at up to 320 kbps, one file or a whole folder at once. ProMedia reads the soundtrack of each video and encodes it as an MP3 that plays in every music app, car stereo and phone. The conversion runs inside your browser, so your videos are never uploaded, there is no file-size limit and you do not need an account.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

  1. Step 1: Drop your MP4 files on the box above. MOV, MKV and WebM videos work too.

  2. Step 2: Choose a Bitrate: 192 kbps suits most videos, 320 kbps is the MP3 maximum, 64–96 kbps is plenty for speech.

  3. Step 3: Press Convert and download each MP3, or all of them as one ZIP.

How it runs

Hardware video engine
Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
FFmpeg (when needed)
Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.

MP4 vs MP3: what is the difference?

An MP4 is a container that holds video, audio and sometimes subtitles; an MP3 holds audio only. Converting keeps the sound and drops the picture. To keep the original sound without re-encoding, or to save as WAV or FLAC instead, extract audio from video and choose M4A or another format.

What is an MP4 file?

An MP4 file (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most common video format: phones, cameras, screen recorders, WhatsApp and most websites save video in it. Inside, the picture is usually H.264 or HEVC and the sound is usually AAC, stored side by side so they play in sync. Because it is just a container, an MP4 can also hold sound only, which is why some music downloads use the .mp4 or .m4a extension.

What is an MP3 file?

An MP3 file is a compressed audio file in the MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer III format. It discards sounds people hardly hear to keep files small, and it is supported by practically every device made in the last twenty-five years. Its bitrate, measured in kilobits per second, decides both the size and the sound quality; 320 kbps is the highest the format allows.

Does converting MP4 to MP3 lose quality?

A little, in theory. The sound in an MP4 is already compressed, usually as AAC, and MP3 is a different compressed format, so the audio is decoded and encoded again. At 192 kbps or more the difference is very hard to hear on normal speakers and headphones. You cannot gain quality by choosing a bitrate above the source: an AAC track at 128 kbps does not sound better as a 320 kbps MP3, it only gets bigger.

If you need the untouched original, save it as M4A on the extract audio from video page, which copies AAC without re-encoding.

Which MP3 bitrate should you use?
BitrateSize per minuteGood for
64 kbps0.48 MBLectures, voice notes, podcasts in mono
128 kbps0.96 MBSpeech in stereo, background music
192 kbps (default)1.44 MBMusic from phone and web videos
256 kbps1.92 MBMusic from high-quality sources
320 kbps (maximum)2.4 MBArchiving music from concert or studio videos
Below a 32 kHz sample rate the MP3 format tops out at 160 kbps; the converter adjusts and says so on the result card.

Why use this MP4 to MP3 converter

  • Nothing is uploaded. The audio is extracted on your device, so private recordings, lectures and family videos stay with you.
  • No size limit and no queue. Long concerts and multi-gigabyte recordings work on a computer because the file is read from disk in chunks.
  • Batch conversion. Drop dozens of MP4 files and download the MP3s together as a ZIP, each named after its video.
  • Works offline after the first conversion. The page and its MP3 encoder are cached by your browser, so later conversions need no connection.

Convert MP4 to MP3 on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac

This converter works in any current browser, so you do not need to install an app. Only picking and saving files differs.

iPhone and iPad

In Safari, tap the drop zone and choose Photo Library or Choose Files. Save the MP3 to Files; from there it can go to a music app, a messaging app or GarageBand.

Android

In Chrome, pick the MP4 from your gallery or downloads. The MP3 is saved to Downloads, where music players pick it up.

Windows 11

Drag the MP4 files from File Explorer into Edge or Chrome. Windows has no built-in MP4 to MP3 option, and nothing needs installing here.

Mac

Drag files from Finder into Safari or Chrome. QuickTime can only export audio as M4A; this page gives you a real MP3.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Converting other audio files, not videos? The MP3 converter turns WAV, M4A, FLAC and more into MP3.

  • Need a lossless file for editing instead? Use MP4 to WAV.

  • Only want one song or quote from a long video? Trim the MP4 with the video trimmer first, or cut the MP3 afterwards with the MP3 cutter.

  • Recordings of speech? Choose 64 or 96 kbps and Mono under Advanced settings to keep files tiny.

  • Turning a clip into a ringtone? Convert it to MP3 here, then cut it to ringtone length with the ringtone maker, which also saves iPhone M4R files.

MP4 to MP3 Converter FAQ

Is MP4 audio better than MP3?

Often, yes. MP4 videos usually carry AAC sound, which is more efficient than MP3 and sounds better at the same bitrate. Converting to MP3 never improves it; choose MP3 for compatibility, or keep the AAC as M4A for quality.

What bitrate should I use for MP3?

192 kbps for music from phone and web videos, 128 kbps for speech in stereo, 64 kbps for voice-only recordings. Use 320 kbps only when the source sound is high quality, such as a concert or studio video.

How do I convert MP4 to MP3 on my phone?

Open this page in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android, tap the drop zone, choose the video and press Convert. The MP3 is saved to Files or Downloads. No app is needed.

Can I convert MP4 to MP3 offline?

Yes, after the first conversion. The page and its MP3 encoder are then stored by your browser, so you can convert again in airplane mode. Nothing is sent anywhere either way.

Why does an MP4 fail with “no audio track”?

The video has no sound stored in it. Screen recordings made without system audio, muted exports and some GIF-style clips are pure video, so there is nothing to turn into an MP3. Play the file with sound on to check, and convert the original recording instead if you have it.

Can I convert many MP4 files to MP3 at once?

Yes. Drop them all on the box; they are converted one after another and can be downloaded together as a ZIP. Each MP3 keeps the name of its video.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Videos are read in chunks straight from disk, so multi-gigabyte files work on desktop computers; phones are limited by their memory. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
