Settings explained
- Time per frame
- 100 ms = 10 frames per second. Browsers do not honour delays under 20 ms.
Formats
Combines 2 or more files into one result.
How it runs
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
- WebAssembly codecs
- Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.
How fast should a GIF play? Time per frame explained
The Time per frame slider sets how long each image stays on screen, from 20 ms to 3 seconds. Short times make motion, long times make a slideshow. Pick the row that matches what you are making:
| Time per frame | Frames per second | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 20 ms | 50 | The fastest speed browsers play; rarely needed |
| 40 ms | 25 | Smooth drawn animation and sprite loops |
| 100 ms | 10 | Stop-motion, flipbooks, pixel art |
| 250 ms | 4 | Quick before-and-after flicks |
| 500 ms (default) | 2 | Photo sequences people can follow |
| 1,000 to 3,000 ms | 1 to 0.33 | Slideshows and step-by-step instructions |
How to make a GIF from pictures
Every image you add becomes one frame, in the order of the thumbnails. The animation takes the shape of the first image and the width you choose (320 to 800 px, or Original), with the longest side capped at 1,600 px. Images with a different shape are handled by Different sizes:
- Fit shows each whole image and fills the empty space with the Background colour, white by default. Best for photos you do not want cropped.
- Fill covers the whole frame and crops what sticks out. Best when the images are nearly the same shape.
- An animated GIF or WebP you add counts as one frame: its first picture. To edit an existing animation frame by frame, split it with the GIF to PNG frame splitter, change the frames and add them back here.
Crossfades: smooth transitions between images
Switch on Crossfade between frames and each change blends into the next image instead of cutting. The fade happens inside each image’s own time, so the total length of the GIF does not change: at the default 500 ms, every change becomes 3 blend frames of 60 ms each. When the GIF loops, the last image fades back into the first.
Every blend frame is a full new picture, so crossfades make the file noticeably larger. They suit slideshows with a few photos; for 20 or more frames of real motion, leave them off.
GIF or animated WebP: which should you save?
Choose Save as under Advanced settings. GIF plays everywhere, from old forums to email, but each frame is limited to 256 colours, so photo slideshows can look grainy. Animated WebP keeps millions of colours and is usually much smaller, and it plays in every current browser, but some apps and editors still expect GIF.
A simple rule: GIF for chats, documents and anything you are not sure about; WebP for your own website. To convert one into the other later, use GIF to WebP or WebP to GIF.
How long should a GIF be?
Short enough to repeat without boring anyone: 2 to 6 seconds for a reaction or a loop, or 5 to 10 images for a slideshow. Length also drives file size, which matters wherever there is a limit. Discord, for example, allows 20 MB per upload on a free account but only 256 KB for an emoji.
For Discord, make the GIF here at 320 or 480 px, then compress the GIF for Discord with the emoji or sticker target. The GIF compressor does the same for any other size limit.
Make a GIF on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac
This animated GIF maker runs in the browser, so you only need to pick the images.
iPhone and iPad
In Safari, tap the drop zone, choose Photo Library and select several photos at once. Save the GIF from Files to Photos with Share → Save Image. Apple’s Shortcuts app has a Make GIF action too, without timing controls.
Android
In Chrome, tap the drop zone and select the photos in your gallery. The GIF is saved to Downloads. Google Photos can also build simple animations from a selection of photos.
Windows
Select the images in File Explorer and drag them onto the page together, then drag the thumbnails into the order you want. Screenshots from Snipping Tool work as they are.
Mac
Select the images in Finder and drag them onto the page. HEIC photos from an iPhone work directly; there is no need to convert them first.
Why make GIFs with this GIF creator
- No watermark, ever. The GIF contains your images and nothing else.
- No upload. Family photos and unreleased designs stay on your device; there is no server to receive them.
- No limits or account. Use as many images as your device can hold and make as many GIFs as you like.
- Works offline. After the first visit, the GIF maker keeps working in airplane mode.
Tips & troubleshooting
Turning a single PNG or JPG into a .gif file, without animation? The image converter saves any image as GIF.
Images of different sizes? Crop them to the same shape first with crop image, and the GIF will have no borders.
Add a caption across the whole animation afterwards with add text to GIF.
A slideshow with music works better as a video: the slideshow maker adds a soundtrack, which GIF cannot carry.
Want the animation to stop on the last image? Set Loop to Once.
GIF Maker (Images to GIF) FAQ
How do I make a GIF from pictures?
Drop two or more pictures onto the GIF maker at the top of this page, drag them into order, set the time per frame and press Create GIF. Each picture becomes one frame and the GIF downloads straight away; nothing is uploaded.
How do I make a GIF on iPhone?
Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone, choose Photo Library and select your photos. Arrange them, set the timing and press Create GIF, then save it from Files to Photos with Share → Save Image. To turn a video into a GIF instead, use video to GIF.
How do I make a GIF for Discord?
Make the GIF at 320 or 480 px, then check its size. Up to 20 MB can be posted from a free account; emoji must stay under 256 KB and stickers under 512 KB, so use compress GIF for Discord for those.
How long should a GIF be?
Two to six seconds for reactions and loops, or five to ten images for a slideshow. Longer GIFs grow quickly in size, and a video is the better format beyond about ten seconds.
Can I make a GIF without a watermark?
Yes. ProMedia never adds a watermark, logo or end card, and there is no paid tier that removes one. The GIF contains only your images.
How many images can I use?
As many as your device has memory for. Smooth animations usually use 10 to 30 frames; slideshows work best with fewer images and a longer time per frame.
Can I make a GIF from PNG or JPG images?
Yes. PNG, JPG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF and other common image formats all work as frames, and you can mix them in one GIF. Transparent PNGs keep their transparency when Different sizes is set to Fill.
