MP3, WAV or M4A: which format to save

The recorder captures uncompressed audio first and converts it once when you stop, so the format only decides the file size and where it plays. For a voice, MP3 and M4A sound the same as WAV to most listeners at a sixth of the size.

Voice recording size by format (mono microphone)
FormatBitrate1 minute10 minutes1 hourBest for
MP3 (default)128 kbps0.96 MB9.60 MB57.6 MBSharing, messaging, podcast drafts, any device
M4A (AAC)128 kbps0.96 MB9.60 MB57.6 MBiPhone, Mac, Apple apps
WAV768 kbps (16-bit, 48 kHz)5.76 MB57.6 MB346 MBEditing in a DAW, transcription services, archiving
Computed from the recorder’s settings. Most microphones are recorded in mono; a stereo input raises MP3 to 192 kbps and M4A to 160 kbps. A microphone running at 44.1 kHz makes WAV files about 8% smaller.

Noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic gain

These are filters your browser applies while you record. Speech usually benefits from the first one; music usually from none.

Echo cancellationOff (Advanced)Removes sound from your speakers that the mic picks up againNormal use with headphones

For stronger clean-up after recording, the AI noise reducer removes background noise from the saved file.

Record audio online for a podcast, a song or an interview

Good recordings start before you press record. Talk at a steady distance, about a hand’s width from a headset or desk mic, and watch the level meter: normal speech should fill most of it without touching the end. Soft furnishings, curtains and a closed door do more for the sound than any filter.

For singing or an instrument, switch Noise suppression off, because it treats sustained notes as noise. For a two-person interview around one laptop, sit at equal distances from the mic, or record each voice on its own device and line them up later. Wear headphones if you play anything back while recording, so the mic does not pick it up twice.

Record audio on PC, Mac, Chromebook or phone

This recorder runs in any current browser. Every system also has a built-in app; the browser version adds MP3 output, a level meter and trimming in one place.

Windows 10 and 11

Windows includes the Sound Recorder app, which saves M4A by default. Use this page in Chrome or Edge when you want MP3 or WAV, or to pick a USB microphone quickly.

Mac

Voice Memos and QuickTime Player (File → New Audio Recording) record the microphone. This page saves MP3 or WAV directly, which Windows users and most websites accept.

Chromebook

ChromeOS has no simple sound recorder for every model. Open this page in Chrome, allow the microphone and record; files go to your Downloads folder.

iPhone and Android

Voice Memos on iPhone and the recorder app on most Android phones work well. This page also runs in Safari and Chrome on phones if you want an MP3 straight away.

Why is my voice recorder not working?

  • Access blocked. If the browser says the microphone was blocked, click the lock or camera icon in the address bar, allow the microphone and reload.
  • The meter does not move. The wrong mic is selected in the recorder’s list, or the mic is muted in your system settings. On Windows, check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
  • “Busy or unavailable”. Another app (a video call, another tab) is holding the microphone. Close it and try again.
  • Very quiet or distorted. Move closer to the mic, or lower the input level if peaks hit the top. Run the mic test for a verdict on your levels.

Can I record audio from my computer?

Not with this voice recorder: it records microphones only. To capture the sound your computer plays, such as a call or a video in a browser tab, use the screen recorder in Chrome or Edge with Tab / system audio, then save the sound alone with extract audio from video.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Need the words on paper? Open the recording in audio to text to transcribe it on your device.

  • Recorded a long take with mistakes in the middle? Cut them out afterwards with the MP3 cutter.

  • For the best voice quality, keep a hand’s width between your mouth and the mic and record in a room with soft furnishings.

  • Before an interview or podcast, record ten seconds of silence and play it back: any hum you hear will be in the whole recording.

Voice Recorder FAQ

How do I record my voice online for free?

Open this page, allow the microphone, click record and speak. When you stop, trim the ends, choose MP3, WAV or M4A and download. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of recordings.

How long can a voice recording be?

No. Your voice is captured losslessly and, in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, written to your device’s storage as you speak, so a long recording does not fill up memory. Safari keeps it in memory, so very long sessions are better split there.

How do I record audio on my PC?

Plug in or select your microphone, open this audio recorder online in Chrome or Edge, allow the microphone and click record. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS without installing anything, and saves MP3, WAV or M4A to your Downloads folder.

Can I use it as an MP3 voice recorder on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, allow the microphone and record; the MP3 lands in Downloads or the Files app. For hour-long sessions on an iPhone, the built-in Voice Memos app is safer, because Safari keeps the recording in memory.

Which format should I choose?

MP3 if you will share or upload the file, WAV if you will edit it or send it to a transcription service, and M4A for Apple apps. You can trim and save again in another format right after recording.

Does the voice recorder remove background noise?

It uses your browser’s built-in noise suppression while recording, which helps with fans and hum. It is not an AI denoiser; for heavier noise, clean the saved file with the noise reducer.

Is my voice recording uploaded?

No. Your voice goes from the microphone into browser storage on this computer or phone, and no server ever hears it. Download the take before you record another one: the stored copy is cleared when a new recording starts or a recorder page is opened again.
