MP4 to MOV Converter
Convert MP4 to MOV for iMovie, Final Cut Pro, QuickTime or any workflow that asks for a .mov file. The H.264 or HEVC video inside an MP4 fits a QuickTime container as it is, so ProMedia copies it instead of re-encoding: the picture is untouched and even long clips are done in seconds. Everything runs in your browser, with no upload and no size cap.

Settings explained
- Quality
- Only used when a stream has to be re-encoded. Compatible streams are copied with no quality loss.
- Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
- Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
- Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
- Video codec
- Automatic copies the original video stream when the new format can hold it, so there is no quality loss.
- Automatic: Best codec the format and your device support
- H.264 (AVC): Plays everywhere
- H.265 (HEVC): About 35% smaller, newer devices
- VP9: Web / WebM
- AV1: Smallest files, slowest to encode
- Always re-encode
- Off: compatible streams are copied instantly and losslessly. On: every stream is re-encoded, which can fix playback glitches.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
- FFmpeg (when needed)
- Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.
MP4 vs MOV for editing on a Mac
For most Mac editing, the two are interchangeable: iMovie, Final Cut Pro and QuickTime open H.264 and HEVC in either container. MOV matters when a template, an upload form or a client specification insists on the .mov extension, or when you want to keep editing in Apple’s own format.
| Question | MP4 | MOV |
|---|---|---|
| Opens in QuickTime Player | Yes, with H.264 or HEVC | Yes |
| Imports into iMovie and Final Cut Pro | Yes, with H.264 or HEVC | Yes |
| Can hold ProRes | No | Yes |
| Plays on Windows, Android and TVs | Yes | Not always |
| Picture quality after this conversion | Original | Identical: the stream is copied |
Why convert MP4 to MOV?
Usually because something in the chain only takes .mov: a motion-graphics template, a client’s delivery spec, an older Mac app or a script that filters by extension. Converting also turns MP3 audio inside an MP4 into AAC, the audio QuickTime files normally carry.
If your app already opens the MP4, there is nothing to gain. The video inside is the same either way.
Does converting MP4 to MOV lose quality?
No. MOV can carry every video codec found in MP4 files, so the video stream is copied byte for byte and AAC audio is copied too. Only audio MOV does not take as-is, such as MP3, is converted to AAC. The result card confirms “copied (lossless)” for every file.
| Track in the MP4 | In the MOV | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 or HEVC video | Copied | Identical |
| AV1 or VP9 video | Copied; QuickTime may not play it | Identical; switch on Always re-encode for H.264 |
| AAC audio | Copied | Identical |
| MP3 audio | Converted to AAC | Clean at 128 kbps or more |
Convert MP4 to MOV on a Mac
Drag the MP4 files from Finder into Safari or Chrome on this page and press Convert. The MOVs land in Downloads and open in QuickTime Player, Photos, iMovie and Final Cut Pro. Nothing needs installing, and big files are read straight from disk rather than uploaded.
Windows
Making MOVs for a Mac colleague? Open the page in Chrome or Edge and drag the MP4s in; the steps are the same.
iPhone and iPad
In Safari, tap the drop zone and choose Choose Files or Photo Library. Save the MOV to Files for use in editing apps.
Tips & troubleshooting
Going the other way, to share a Mac video with Windows or Android users? Use MOV to MP4.
Need a smaller file for the editor? Trim first with the video trimmer; the conversion itself keeps the size.
HEVC footage stutters in an older editor? Make an H.264 copy with the HEVC to H.264 converter, then convert that to MOV.
Converting a mix of formats to MOV? The video converter takes MKV, WebM and AVI with MOV as the output.
MP4 to MOV Converter FAQ
Why convert MP4 to MOV?
Mainly for workflows that require a .mov file: some templates, delivery specs and older Mac apps. Final Cut Pro, iMovie and QuickTime already open H.264 and HEVC MP4s, so if your app accepts the MP4, converting changes nothing.
Does converting MP4 to MOV lose quality?
No. The video stream is copied into the MOV unchanged, and AAC audio is copied too. Only MP3 audio is converted, to AAC, because the MOV output takes AAC. The conversion takes about as long as copying the file.
How do I convert MP4 to MOV on a Mac?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, drag the MP4s in from Finder and press Convert. The MOV files are saved to Downloads. QuickTime Player’s Export As can also make a MOV, but it re-encodes the video at the size you pick; this page copies the stream instead.
Can Final Cut import MP4?
Yes. Final Cut Pro imports MP4 files with H.264 or HEVC video. Convert to MOV only when a template, plug-in or delivery requirement specifically asks for a .mov file.
Is MOV better quality than MP4?
No. Both are containers, and the same H.264 or HEVC stream looks identical in either. MOV can additionally hold ProRes, which is why editors use it for masters, but this converter copies your existing video rather than making ProRes.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Videos are read in chunks straight from disk, so multi-gigabyte files work on desktop computers; phones are limited by their memory. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
