Black and White Photo Converter
Turn any colour picture into a black and white photo in one click, or a whole folder of them at once. Colour is removed with the standard luminance mix, contrast gets a gentle lift so the greys do not look flat, and you can push contrast, brightness and sharpness further. The photos are converted in your browser and never uploaded.

How it runs
- GPU canvas

How colours turn into shades of grey
A black and white image converter does not treat every colour equally. Green counts most, red less and blue least, matching how bright the eye perceives them. That is why a deep blue sky turns dark while yellow stays almost white, and why a brick red and a leaf green end up as similar mid-dark greys.
| Colour | RGB | Grey level | Brightness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure red | rgb(255, 0, 0) | 76 | 30% |
| Pure green | rgb(0, 255, 0) | 150 | 59% |
| Pure blue | rgb(0, 0, 255) | 29 | 11% |
| Yellow | rgb(255, 255, 0) | 226 | 89% |
| Pale sky blue | rgb(135, 206, 235) | 195 | 76% |
| Deep blue sky | rgb(30, 90, 200) | 80 | 31% |
| Leaf green | rgb(34, 139, 34) | 92 | 36% |
| Brick red | rgb(178, 34, 34) | 71 | 28% |
Contrast, brightness and vignette in black and white
Drop the photo and press Convert: that is the standard result, and for most portraits and street photos it is all you need. If the picture looks grey and soft, raise Contrast in steps of 10; the slider adds to the +10 already in the look, so +20 on the slider means +30 in total. Brightness lifts shadows and mid-tones without clipping white, and a little Sharpen suits textures such as stone, wood and skin in close-ups.
Under Advanced settings, Vignette darkens the corners to pull the eye to the middle, a classic darkroom touch that works especially well in monochrome.
Grayscale vs black and white: what is the difference?
In everyday use there is none: a “black and white photo” is a picture made only of greys, from black through every shade to white. That is exactly what you get here, a grayscale image with the full range of tones.
In a stricter, technical sense, a black-and-white image has only two colours, pure black and pure white, with nothing in between. That is used for line art, stamps and fax-style scans. This converter does not threshold photos down to two colours. For a scanned signature or document that should look crisp, raise Contrast and Brightness strongly, which pushes paper towards white and ink towards black while keeping smooth edges.
Convert many photos to black and white at once
Add the whole set, set the sliders once and press Convert. Every photo gets identical settings, so a series keeps the same mood, and they come back as one ZIP. GIFs stay animated with every frame in greyscale. Each photo keeps its format unless you choose JPG, PNG or WebP under Advanced settings, and the originals are never changed.
- Strong shapes and light make the best monochrome pictures: silhouettes, shadows, textures, faces.
- Colour contrast does not survive. A red flower on green leaves can become grey on grey; use the table above to predict it and add contrast.
- Keep the colour original. Converting is one-way in the saved copy.
Tips & troubleshooting
Want sepia, vintage or warm toning instead of neutral grey? Photo filters has those looks and more.
Monochrome hides colour noise well: dim indoor shots often look cleaner in black and white than in colour.

For a black and white subject on a clean background, cut it out with the background remover first.
Black and White Photo Converter FAQ
How do I make a photo black and white?
Drop it here and press Convert. Colour is removed and contrast lifted slightly; move the Contrast and Brightness sliders for a different look before converting.
What is the difference between grayscale and black and white?
For photos, nothing: both mean an image made of greys. Strictly, black and white can mean only two colours with no greys; this converter keeps the full range of grey tones and does not reduce photos to two colours.
Can I convert many photos to black and white at once?
Yes. Add them all, set the sliders once and press Convert. Every photo gets the same treatment and you can download them together as a ZIP.
Why does a deep blue sky look so dark?
Blue contributes the least to brightness in the grey mix, so a saturated blue sky becomes a dark grey, while a pale, hazy sky stays light. Raise Brightness, or accept it as the dramatic sky that many black and white photographers aim for.
Are your photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photos are processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
