Flip Video Horizontally or Vertically (Mirror a Video)
Flip video clips horizontally to mirror them, or vertically to turn the picture upside down. The most common job is to unmirror a selfie video so that text, logos and your parting read the right way round. ProMedia flips every frame in your browser and copies the sound untouched; nothing is uploaded and a whole batch can be mirrored at once.

Settings explained
- Quality
- Only used when a stream has to be re-encoded. Compatible streams are copied with no quality loss.
- Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
- Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
- Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
- FFmpeg (when needed)
- Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.
Flip horizontally, flip vertically or rotate 180°?
A horizontal flip swaps left and right, like a mirror. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom. A 180° rotation turns the picture round, which looks like an upside-down image but keeps text readable when you turn your head. Pick by what looks wrong in your clip.
| Change | Left and right | Top and bottom | Text afterwards | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flip horizontally | Swapped | Unchanged | Mirror-written | Unmirroring selfie videos, matching the direction of two shots |
| Flip vertically | Unchanged | Swapped | Upside down and mirrored | Footage filmed through a mirror or a reflection in water |
| Rotate 180° | Swapped | Swapped | Upside down but readable | A clip recorded with the phone held upside down |
Why are front camera videos mirrored?
Phones show the front camera preview mirrored so it behaves like a bathroom mirror while you film yourself. Depending on the phone and its camera settings, the saved video can keep that mirrored view, so a T-shirt slogan or a sign behind you reads backwards. Flipping the clip horizontally puts everything back the way other people see it.
Some phones let you choose how front-camera shots are saved; on iPhone the switch is Settings → Camera → Mirror Front Camera. It only changes new recordings, which is why existing clips still need a flip.
Does flipping a video reduce quality?
A flip changes every pixel position, and most players ignore “mirrored” flags in a file, so the video has to be encoded again. ProMedia does it once with your Quality setting (Balanced by default, under Advanced settings) and saves H.264 for MP4, MOV and MKV, or VP9 for WebM. At Balanced the difference is hard to see; choose Best quality for footage you will edit further. The audio is copied without changes and the file keeps its format.
Flip a video on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac
This video flipper runs in any current browser. Built-in editors can mirror too, one clip at a time.
iPhone and iPad
In Photos, tap Edit, then the crop icon and the flip button at the top. Use this page in Safari to unmirror several selfie videos at once.
Android
Open this page in Chrome, tap the drop zone and select the front-camera clips from your gallery; the mirrored copies go to Downloads.
Windows
Clipchamp can flip clips and re-export them. Here you drag the files from File Explorer into the browser and flip a batch without a project.
Mac
QuickTime Player has Edit → Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical. This page also handles MKV and WebM files, which QuickTime cannot open.
Tips & troubleshooting
Clip upside down rather than mirrored? Rotate the video by 180°: it is instant and lossless for MP4 and MOV.
Mirroring a photo instead? Flip Image does the same for JPG, PNG and HEIC pictures.
Recording yourself on a computer? The webcam recorder saves clips straight from the browser.
Want a clip to run backwards rather than be mirrored? That is Reverse Video.
Flip / Mirror Video FAQ
How do I unmirror a video on iPhone?
Open the clip in Photos, tap Edit, the crop icon and the flip button, then save. Or open this page in Safari, pick the video from Photo Library, choose Horizontal (mirror) and press Flip; the corrected copy can be saved back to Photos.
How do I flip a video vertically?
Choose Vertical (upside down) and press Flip. If the clip is simply upside down because the phone was held that way, rotate it 180° instead, so the text stays readable.
Can you flip a video on iPhone while recording?
Not mid-recording. The Mirror Front Camera setting under Settings → Camera decides how new front-camera shots are saved. For videos you already have, flip them afterwards here or in Photos.
Why would I mirror a video on purpose?
Dance and fitness teachers often mirror tutorials so viewers can copy the moves with the same side of their body. Editors also flip a shot so two people in a conversation face each other, as long as there is no text in the frame.
Is flipping a video the same as reversing it?
No. Flipping mirrors the picture; the clip still plays forwards. Reversing plays the frames from the last to the first. Use Reverse Video for the backwards effect.
Is your video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your video is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
