Flip Image (Mirror a Photo)

Flip image files horizontally to mirror them, or vertically to turn them upside down like a reflection in water. It is the quick fix for selfies where writing reads backwards, and for designs that must be printed in reverse. Flip one photo or a whole folder at once; everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.

How it runs

GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
WebAssembly codecs
Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.

Flip horizontally, flip vertically or rotate 180°?

A horizontal flip is a mirror: left becomes right and text reads backwards. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom, which also leaves text mirrored. Doing both at once is the same as turning the picture 180°, and that is the only one of the three that keeps text readable.

Three ways to turn a picture around
ChangeWhat movesText afterwardsTypical use
Flip horizontally (mirror)Left and right swapReads backwardsUnmirroring selfies, matching the direction of a layout, transfer prints
Flip verticallyTop and bottom swapUpside down and backwardsReflections, fixing scans fed in the wrong way, special effects

Flipping keeps the exact width and height; nothing is cropped or padded.

Why does my front camera flip photos?

The front camera preview is shown like a mirror, because that is what people expect when they look at themselves. Whether the saved photo stays mirrored depends on the phone. iPhones save selfies the way other people see you, the opposite of the preview, unless Settings → Camera → Mirror Front Camera is switched on. Many Android phones have a similar setting, often called something like “Save selfies as previewed”.

That is why a T-shirt slogan can read correctly on screen and backwards in the saved picture, or the other way round. Flip the photo horizontally here to get the version you want, and change the camera setting if it keeps happening.

How to unmirror a selfie

Add the selfie, keep Horizontal (mirror) selected and press Flip. Any writing in the picture now reads normally, and your parting and the background are on the same side as in real life. If you took a whole series of mirrored shots, add them all at once: they are flipped the same way and come back as one ZIP.

The photo is turned upright before it is mirrored, so a selfie saved sideways with an orientation flag still comes out standing up.

Does flipping an image reduce quality?

Not in any way you can see. Mirroring moves pixels without blending them, so no detail is softened. JPG photos are then saved once at 92% quality, which looks identical to the original; PNG files are saved losslessly and lose nothing at all. Animated GIFs and WebPs keep every frame and their timing.

The one thing that does not survive is the hidden metadata: the flipped copy has no EXIF block, so camera details and GPS location are left out. Your original file is never changed.

Is mirroring the same as flipping?

Almost always. “Mirror” usually means a horizontal flip, the view a bathroom mirror gives you, while “flip” is the general word that covers both directions; that is why editors label the choices horizontal and vertical. Some apps call the vertical one “reflect” instead. Whatever the label, there are only two mirror operations, and a third result, the 180° turn, comes from doing both. A so-called flip that keeps text readable is really a rotation.

When you need a mirror image on purpose

Sometimes the backwards version is the goal. A mirror image online in a few seconds saves opening a full editor for these jobs:

  • Iron-on and transfer prints. Designs printed on transfer paper are applied face down, so the artwork has to be mirrored first or the text ends up backwards on the fabric.
  • Window stickers seen from outside. A decal stuck on the inside of a glass door needs mirrored text to read correctly from the street.
  • Matching a layout. In a two-photo spread, a face or product looking off the page often looks better flipped to face the centre.
  • Practice and reference. Artists flip a drawing to spot proportions that the eye has stopped noticing.

Flip a photo on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac

Most systems can mirror a single picture if you know where to look. Here is where, and when this page is quicker.

iPhone and iPad

In Photos, tap Edit, then Crop, and use the flip button at the top. To flip a batch, or a GIF, open this page in Safari and pick the files.

Android

Gallery apps differ: some have a flip button in their editor, others can only rotate. In Chrome, this page works the same on every phone.

Windows 10 and 11

Paint has Rotate → Flip horizontal and Flip vertical for one picture. To mirror a whole folder of selfies, select them in File Explorer and drop them here.

Mac

Preview has Tools → Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical. This page adds whole folders, animated GIFs and a choice of output format.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Picture upside down rather than backwards? You want rotate image at 180°, not a vertical flip.

  • Mirrored selfie video? Flip video fixes clips from the front camera the same way.

  • Check for writing before you flip a photo you will post: signs, logos and number plates give a mirrored picture away.

  • Combine the flipped and original versions side by side with combine images to make a symmetry effect.

  • Save transfer artwork as PNG under Advanced settings so the edges of the design stay crisp.

Flip / Mirror Image FAQ

How do I unmirror a selfie?

Flip it horizontally: add the photo, keep Horizontal (mirror) selected and press Flip. Writing in the picture reads the right way again. On iPhone, Settings → Camera → Mirror Front Camera decides how future selfies are saved.

Why does my front camera flip photos?

The preview is shown like a mirror, but many phones save the photo as other people see you, so the saved picture looks reversed compared with the screen. A camera setting usually controls this.

How do I flip an image horizontally?

Choose Horizontal (mirror) and press Flip. Left and right swap, the size stays the same, and you can download the result straight away.

How do I mirror an image on iPhone?

In Photos, use Edit, Crop and the flip button. For several photos at once, open this page in Safari, pick them from your library and download the flipped copies.

Does flipping an image reduce quality?

No visible loss. JPGs are re-saved once at 92% quality and PNGs losslessly. Only the hidden EXIF metadata, such as GPS location, is not copied to the flipped file.

Can I flip only part of an image?

No, the whole picture is mirrored. To flip one element, cut it out first, for example with the image cropper, flip that piece, and place it back in your editor of choice.

Can I flip a GIF?

Yes. Every frame is mirrored and the timing is kept, so the flipped GIF plays just like the original.

Are your images uploaded anywhere?

No. Your images are processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
