Horizontal to Vertical Video Converter (16:9 to 9:16)
This horizontal to vertical video converter turns 16:9 landscape footage into 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, or 4:5 and 1:1 for feed posts. Keep the whole shot over a blurred copy of itself, crop to the part that matters, let the frame pan slowly across the scene, or add bars. The result is a full 1080×1920 video, made in your browser without uploading anything.

Blurred background, crop, pan or bars: which fill to choose
A landscape frame is about three times wider than a vertical slice of the same height, so you either keep the whole shot small or show part of it big. The four fills make that trade in different ways.
| Fill | What viewers see | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Blurred background (default) | The whole 16:9 shot across the middle, a blurred, enlarged copy of it filling the top and bottom | Talking heads, gameplay, slides, anything where nothing may be cut off |
| Crop to fill | A full-screen vertical slice at the position you choose | One subject that stays in one place |
| Pan across | A full-screen slice that glides slowly from one side to the other over the length of the clip | Landscapes, cityscapes, group shots |
| Black bars | The whole shot with black above and below | Neutral, documentary-style posts |
How to make a horizontal video vertical without cropping
Choose Blurred background or Black bars. Both keep every pixel of the original frame: the shot is scaled to the full width of the vertical video, so it fills about a third of the height, and the rest is filled with a soft blurred copy or black. Blurred backgrounds look native in TikTok and Reels feeds because the colours of the scene continue to the edges.
Cropping fills the screen but keeps only a slice of the shot. From a 1920×1080 video, a 9:16 crop keeps a 608-pixel-wide strip, about 32% of the width, which is then scaled up to 1080×1920. Starting from 4K footage keeps that crop sharp.
| Target shape | Slice of the source | Width kept | Output size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:16 (TikTok, Reels, Shorts) | 608×1080 | 32% | 1080×1920 |
| 4:5 (Instagram portrait) | 864×1080 | 45% | 1080×1350 |
| 1:1 (square) | 1080×1080 | 56% | 1080×1080 |
Rotating vs reframing a video: what is the difference?
Rotating turns the picture by 90°, so a landscape scene ends up lying on its side; that only fixes clips that were filmed sideways by mistake, with Rotate Video. Reframing keeps the scene upright and changes the shape of the frame around it, which is what TikTok, Reels and Shorts need. If a phone video already looks sideways in your gallery, rotate it first, then reframe.
Convert video to vertical on iPhone, Android or a computer
Phone editors can crop to 9:16, but not add a blurred background or a pan. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, choose the clips and the fill, and the converted videos save to Photos, Files or Downloads. The video is re-encoded once as H.264 at the Quality set under Advanced settings, and the sound is copied unchanged, so quality stays close to the original.
Tips & troubleshooting
Speaker moves around the frame? Auto reframe video tracks faces with on-device AI and moves the crop smoothly.
Need an exact platform size with bars or a stretch instead? Resize Video has presets for TikTok, Reels, Shorts and YouTube.
Long landscape video for Stories? Convert it here, then cut it into parts with the video splitter.
Add captions after reframing, so they sit inside the vertical frame: auto captions burns them in.
Vertical Video Converter (16:9 to 9:16) FAQ
How do I make a horizontal video vertical for Instagram Reels?
Choose 9:16, keep Blurred background and press Convert. The result is 1080×1920, the frame Reels uses. Choose Crop to fill instead if the subject stays in the middle and you want it full-screen.
How do I change a horizontal video to vertical for TikTok?
Same steps: 9:16 and the fill you like. TikTok displays 1080×1920, so the converted video fills the screen with no extra bars added by the app.
Can I make a horizontal video vertical without losing quality?
With Blurred background or Black bars, nothing is cut away, and the video is re-encoded once at a good quality. With Crop to fill, the kept slice is enlarged, so start from 4K footage for the sharpest result.
How do I make a horizontal video vertical using AI?
Use Auto reframe video: it detects faces in each frame and moves the crop window to follow them, so the speaker stays in shot without manual adjustment.
Is your video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your video is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
