How it runs
- Whisper speech model
- Speech recognition uses an open Whisper model. It downloads once after you confirm its size, then runs on your device — on the GPU via WebGPU when available.
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
What format are WhatsApp voice notes?
WhatsApp records voice notes as Opus audio inside an Ogg container. On Android they are saved with the .opus extension; WhatsApp Web downloads them as .ogg. It is the same audio either way, so opus to text and ogg to text are one job here. Ordinary audio files people forward, such as songs or iPhone voice memos, are usually MP3 or M4A, which also work.
| What you have | File you get | Works here? |
|---|---|---|
| Voice note saved on Android | .opus (named like PTT-20261014-WA0001.opus) | Yes |
| Voice note downloaded in WhatsApp Web | .ogg | Yes |
| Voice note shared from an iPhone | .opus | Yes |
| Audio file someone forwarded | .mp3, .m4a, .aac | Yes |
| Chat exported with media | One .opus file per voice note | Yes, drop them all at once |
| Video note (round video message) | .mp4 | Use video to text |
How to export a WhatsApp voice note
WhatsApp keeps voice notes inside the app, so the first step is getting the file out. The share route below works on any recent version.
Android
Long-press the voice note in the chat, tap Share (in the top bar or under ⋮) and save it to Files or Drive. Saved notes also sit in the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder of your phone’s storage.
iPhone
Long-press the voice message, tap Forward, then the Share icon at the bottom right, and choose Save to Files. In Safari, tap the drop zone and pick it from Files.
WhatsApp Web and desktop
Hover over the voice message, open the small menu arrow and choose Download. The .ogg file lands in your Downloads folder, ready to drop here.
A whole conversation
Use Export chat with media in the chat’s menu. The export contains every voice note as a separate file; drop them here together.
Can you transcribe a voice note without uploading it?
Yes, and that is the point of this page: transcribe a WhatsApp voice note without it ever leaving your device. WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, but the moment you upload a voice note to a transcription website, that service has a copy of a private conversation. Here the speech model runs inside your browser tab: the audio is decoded and transcribed on your phone or computer, and no server ever receives it.
Recent WhatsApp versions can also show transcripts of voice messages themselves, in a limited set of languages. Use this page when that option is missing, the language is not covered, or you need the text as a file, translated into English, or for a batch of notes.
Which speech model to use for voice notes
Voice notes are short and usually clear, so the smaller models are enough. Phones pick Fastest automatically; on a computer Balanced is the default. Choose Accurate for notes recorded in a car, a street or a noisy room. The model downloads once and stays in your browser.
| Model | Download (no WebGPU) | Pick it for |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest | 44 MB | Clear notes on a phone; quickest first download |
| Balanced | 80 MB | Most voice notes, on a computer |
| Accurate | 252 MB | Background noise, accents, mumbled speech |
Why transcribe WhatsApp audio here
- Private voice note to text. Notes are processed on your own device and never uploaded.
- Plain text, ready to paste. Timestamps are off by default here, and the text breaks into paragraphs at longer pauses.
- Many notes at once. Each voice note gets its own transcript tab.
- Translate to English. Switch it on for notes in another language and the transcript comes out in English.
- Free and offline. No account and no limit on notes; once the model is cached it works without a connection.
Tips & troubleshooting
Very short notes (a few seconds) transcribe better when you choose the Spoken language instead of automatic detection.
Noisy voice note? Clean it with remove background noise first, then transcribe the cleaned file.
Long recordings, interviews and podcasts are covered in detail on audio to text, including export to SRT for subtitles.
Want timestamps after all? Turn on Timestamps in TXT, DOCX and copy in the transcript editor.
WhatsApp Audio to Text FAQ
How do I convert WhatsApp audio to text?
Save the voice note from WhatsApp (Share or Forward → Save to Files on a phone, Download on WhatsApp Web), drop the file on this page and press Transcribe. The speech model runs in your browser, so the note stays on your device. Copy the text or save it as TXT or DOCX.
Can I transcribe a voice note without uploading it?
Yes. This page never uploads anything: the speech model is downloaded to your browser once, and every voice note is transcribed locally on your phone or computer. You can even switch to airplane mode after the first run.
What format are WhatsApp voice notes?
They are Opus audio in an Ogg container, saved as .opus files on phones and downloaded as .ogg from WhatsApp Web. Both work here directly, as do MP3 and M4A files people forward.
Can it translate a voice note into English?
Yes. Before you press Transcribe, switch on Translate to English and the text comes out in English whatever language was spoken. This works with the Fastest, Balanced and Accurate models.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone. Phones use the Fastest model, a 44 MB download without WebGPU, to save memory. Voice notes are short, so they transcribe comfortably on a phone.
Is your voice note uploaded anywhere?
No. Your voice note is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
