Remove Background Noise From Audio and Video

AI

Remove background noise from voice recordings and videos in your browser. Fans, traffic, keyboard clatter, hiss and mains hum fade away while the voice stays clear, thanks to RNNoise, a small neural network built for speech. It starts instantly, needs no separate model download and runs offline, so your recording is never uploaded.

How to remove background noise

  1. Step 1: Drop an audio file or a video on the box above. Several files can be cleaned in one go.

  2. Step 2: Choose Light, Medium or Strong, and switch on Remove mains hum if you hear a low buzz.

  3. Step 3: Press Clean. Long recordings are processed in one-minute pieces, so even hour-long files work.

  4. Step 4: Compare before and after, then download. Videos keep their picture; only the sound is replaced.

Settings explained

Strength
  • Light: RNNoise, blended for natural room tone
  • Medium: RNNoise + gentle hiss clean-up
  • Strong: Maximum reduction
Remove mains hum (50/60 Hz)
Detects 50 or 60 Hz hum and notches it out with its harmonics.
Save as
With “Same as input”, videos keep their picture and only the soundtrack is replaced; MP3, WAV and M4A save just the cleaned audio.

Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.

How it runs

RNNoise
RNNoise, a tiny neural noise suppressor, runs in WebAssembly on your device.
Web Audio
Audio is processed with the browser’s built-in Web Audio engine, sample-accurate and fast.
Hardware video engine
Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.

Light, Medium or Strong: how much noise reduction?

Start with Medium. It removes most steady noise and leaves the voice natural. Use Light when you want some room sound to stay, for example in a vlog, and Strong for a noisy street or a loud fan, accepting a slightly processed sound. The result card shows the noise floor before and after.

Can AI remove background noise from audio?

Yes, and for speech it does it better than classic filters. RNNoise is a compact neural network trained to tell voice from noise in 10-millisecond frames, so it can keep a voice that overlaps a fan instead of cutting the whole frequency band. ProMedia runs it at 48 kHz, the rate it was trained for, and converts back to your file’s own rate afterwards.

It is built for voices. The table shows what that means in practice.

Remove background noise from a video

Drop the video as it is. The soundtrack is cleaned and put back, and the picture is copied without re-encoding when the format allows it (MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM with common codecs), so there is no quality loss on the image. The cleaned sound is saved as AAC, or Opus for WebM, at 192 kbps.

To keep only the cleaned sound, choose MP3, WAV or M4A under Save as in Advanced settings. Grainy or noisy picture is a different problem: denoise video works on the image.

How to make audio sound cleaner

  1. Fix the room first. Soft furnishings and a microphone close to the mouth beat any software.
  2. Clean before you level. Remove the noise here, then even out the volume with normalize audio, so the noise is not made louder.
  3. Shape the voice. A small cut in the low end with the bass booster and equalizer removes rumble that is not hum.
  4. Cut the gaps. Long silent stretches can go with remove silence from audio.

Remove background noise on iPhone, Android, Mac or Windows

The noise reducer runs in any modern browser and needs no separate model download, so it works on phones as well as computers.

iPhone

Voice Memos has a one-tap Enhance Recording for its own recordings. For videos, other apps’ audio or more control, open this page in Safari and pick the file.

Android

Open the page in Chrome and pick the recording or video from your files. The cleaned file saves to Downloads.

Mac

Drag the file from Finder into Safari, Chrome or Edge. WAV and AIFF recordings come back as WAV.

Windows

Drag the file into Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Several files at once are cleaned one after another.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Keep a few seconds of room tone at the start of a recording; it makes the before/after comparison easy to judge.

  • If the voice starts to sound watery, step down from Strong to Medium; over-cleaning costs clarity.

  • Transcribing afterwards? Clean audio improves accuracy in audio to text.

  • Recording something new? The voice recorder has the browser’s own noise suppression built in.

Noise Reducer FAQ

How do I remove background noise from audio?

Drop the recording here, leave the strength on Medium and press Clean. RNNoise removes steady noise such as fans and hiss while keeping the voice, and the file comes back in the same format: MP3 stays MP3, M4A stays M4A, WAV stays WAV.

How do I remove background noise from a video?

Drop the video and press Clean. Only the soundtrack is processed; the picture is copied without re-encoding when the format allows, so image quality is unchanged. The cleaned video keeps its original container, such as MP4 or MOV.

How do I remove background noise but keep the voice?

Use Light or Medium. RNNoise is trained to keep speech, and these strengths blend a little of the original signal back in, which keeps the voice natural. Strong removes more noise but can make the voice sound slightly processed.

Does it work on music or echo?

It is designed for speech. On music it can remove instruments along with the noise, and it does not remove echo or room reverb, which need a better recording position rather than noise reduction.

How do I remove background noise from a video on iPhone?

Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone and choose the video from your photo library. The noise reducer is small and needs no separate model download, so it runs well on a phone. The cleaned video saves to the Files app, and from there to Photos.

Is your recording uploaded anywhere?

No. Your recording is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
