Animated WebP Maker

This animated WebP maker turns a video clip or a GIF into a WebP animation with millions of colours, smooth transparency and a far smaller file than GIF. Trim the clip, choose frame rate, width and quality, or go lossless. It is made for website animations, product loops and stickers, and it all runs in your browser with nothing uploaded.

How it runs

Hardware video engine
Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
WebAssembly codecs
Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.
FFmpeg (when needed)
Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.

Animated WebP vs GIF vs MP4

Animated WebP sits between GIF and video: it loops by itself and works in an image tag like a GIF, but compresses like a modern format. Google measured GIFs converted to lossy WebP at 64% smaller on average, and lossless WebP at 19% smaller.

What is an animated WebP?

An animated WebP is a WebP image file that holds several frames, each with its own display time, plus a loop count, much like a GIF. Each frame is compressed with WebP’s lossy (VP8-based) or lossless method and can carry a full alpha channel. Google introduced WebP in 2010, and every current major browser now displays animated WebP.

Convert a video to animated WebP

Video frames are decoded in your browser and encoded in small batches, so even long clips never sit uncompressed in memory. Each frame stores only the part of the picture that changed, which is why loops with a still background come out very small. A clip can have up to 3,000 frames, which is 3 minutes 20 seconds at 15 fps; for anything that long, an MP4 is the better format.

Can WebP animations be transparent?

Yes, with smooth edges that GIF cannot do. When you start from a GIF, its transparent areas are kept in the WebP. Videos are treated as opaque, so a WebP made from a video always has a solid background. To convert existing GIFs one after another, GIF to WebP takes a whole batch with the same settings.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • An app that refuses WebP? Convert the animation back with WebP to GIF.

  • Want the GIF version as well for older software? Make it from the same clip with video to GIF.

  • For a website background loop longer than a few seconds, a muted MP4 is usually smaller still: trim it with the video trimmer.

Animated WebP Maker FAQ

What is an animated WebP?

It is a WebP image containing several frames with their own timing and a loop count, like a GIF, but with millions of colours, smooth transparency and lossy or lossless compression. It usually comes out much smaller than the same animation as GIF.

Is animated WebP smaller than GIF?

Usually, yes. Google found GIFs converted to lossy WebP 64% smaller on average and lossless WebP 19% smaller. In our own test, a 3-second clip was 336 KB as WebP against 484 KB as GIF.

How do I convert a video to animated WebP?

Drop the video on this page, drag the timeline handles to the part you want, set the frame rate, width and quality, and press Create. The .webp downloads straight away; nothing is uploaded.

Do browsers and apps support animated WebP?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display it, so it works on any modern website. Support in apps varies: some older desktop software and email clients only show GIF, so keep a GIF version for those.

Can WebP animations be transparent?

Yes. WebP supports a full alpha channel, so edges can be soft. Transparency from a GIF is kept; WebPs made from video are opaque.
