WebP to GIF Converter
Convert WebP to GIF in your browser, animated or static, and keep every frame and its timing. Drop one sticker or a whole batch; each WebP becomes a GIF that plays in older apps, email and chat tools that refuse WebP. The converter works offline after your first visit, has no file limit and never uploads your images.

How to convert WebP to GIF
Step 1: Drop your WebP files on the box above. Animated and static WebP can be mixed.
Step 2: Keep Colours at 256 and Dithering on for the closest match to the original.
Step 3: Under Advanced settings, set Background for semi-transparent pixels to the colour the GIF will sit on.
Step 4: Press Convert, then save each GIF from its result card or press Download all (.zip) to get them together.
Good to know
Settings explained
- Background for semi-transparent pixels
- GIF transparency is on/off; soft edges are blended onto this colour.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
- WebAssembly codecs
- Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.
Animated WebP vs GIF: which is better?
Animated WebP is the better format: more colours, smoother transparency and smaller files. GIF wins on compatibility, because practically every app, email client and editor that shows images can play a GIF. Convert WebP to GIF when the place you are posting to does not accept WebP.
| Feature | Animated WebP | GIF |
|---|---|---|
| Colours | Millions | Up to 256 per frame |
| Transparency | Smooth, 256 levels | On or off per pixel |
| Frame timing precision | 1 ms | 10 ms |
| Compression | Lossy or lossless, modern | Lossless palette with LZW, from 1987 |
| Size of the same animation | Smaller | Larger; in our test 458 KB of WebP became a 632 KB GIF |
| Plays in | Current browsers: Chrome 32+, Edge 18+, Firefox 65+, Safari 14+ | Practically everything that shows images |
What is a WebP file?
A WebP file is an image in the format Google introduced in 2010 to make web pages lighter. One format covers lossy and lossless compression, a full alpha channel and animation. Many websites now serve their images as WebP, so a “Save image as” in the browser often gives you a .webp, and WhatsApp stickers are WebP files too.
The trouble starts outside the browser: many older apps, email clients and editors still cannot open WebP, and some only show the first frame of an animated one.
Why does my WebP sticker not animate after converting?
Because many converters and image viewers decode only the first frame of a WebP, so the GIF they save is a still picture. ProMedia reads every frame of an animated WebP and writes them all into the GIF, with the original delays and loop count.
If your result is still a single frame, check the Frames count on the result card. A count of 1 means the WebP itself was static, which is common for sticker previews and thumbnails; there is no animation in the file to keep.
What changes when an animated WebP becomes a GIF
GIF is an older, simpler format, so a few things are translated rather than copied. This is exactly what the converter does with each one:
| In the WebP | In the GIF |
|---|---|
| Millions of colours | Up to 256 per frame (the Colours slider sets the maximum); dithering smooths gradients |
| Soft, partly transparent edges | Pixels under 50% opacity become fully transparent; the rest are blended onto the background colour you choose (white by default) |
| Frame delays in milliseconds | Rounded to GIF’s 10 ms steps without drifting, so the total length stays the same |
| Very short delays | 10 ms or less becomes 100 ms, which is how browsers already showed it; 11 to 19 ms is raised to 20 ms, the shortest delay browsers play correctly |
| Loop count | Kept: forever, once or a set number of times |
| A static (single-frame) WebP | A still GIF |
Colours and dithering: getting the closest match
Start with 256 colours and dithering on; that is the closest a GIF gets to a full-colour WebP. Dithering scatters pixels of neighbouring palette colours to fake the shades GIF cannot store, which hides banding in gradients and skin tones but adds grain and some file size.
For stickers, logos and cartoons with flat colours, switch dithering off and try 64 to 128 colours. The GIF gets smaller and the edges stay clean, because there were few shades to imitate in the first place.
Convert WebP to GIF offline
Once this page has loaded, the converter needs no connection: it runs entirely in your browser, and after your first visit it keeps working in airplane mode or on a locked-down network. That also means no upload limit, no daily cap and no queue. Drop a few hundred stickers at once and download them as one ZIP; if one file fails, the others still finish.
Convert WebP to GIF on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone
The same converter runs in every modern browser. Only the way you pick files and find the results differs.
Windows 10 and 11
Drag the .webp files from File Explorer onto the page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. The GIFs go to your Downloads folder, or extract the ZIP with right-click → Extract All.
Mac
Drag the files from Finder into Safari or Chrome. The GIFs land in Downloads with the same names and a .gif extension.
Android
In Chrome, tap the drop zone and choose the WebP files from your file manager or Downloads. The GIFs are saved to Downloads and can be shared from there.
iPhone and iPad
In Safari, tap the drop zone, choose Choose File and pick the WebP from Files. Save each GIF to Photos with Share → Save Image so it keeps animating.
Tips & troubleshooting
Edges look jagged or have a halo? Set Background for semi-transparent pixels to the colour of the page or chat the GIF will appear on.
GIF bigger than you need? Lower Colours to 128 or 64, or finish with the GIF compressor and a target size.
Static WebP photos are better as JPG or PNG: use WebP to PNG to keep transparency or WebP to JPG for the smallest file.
Going the other way, for a website? GIF to WebP makes the animation smaller again.
WebP to GIF Converter FAQ
How do I convert an animated WebP to GIF?
Drop the animated WebP on this page and press Convert. Every frame is decoded and written into the GIF with its original delay and loop count, so the GIF plays the same animation. You can convert many files at once and download them as a ZIP.
Can I convert WebP to GIF offline?
Yes. The converter runs in your browser, so after the first visit it keeps working without an internet connection. Nothing is uploaded at any point, even when you are online.
Why does my WebP sticker not animate after converting?
Many converters read only the first frame of a WebP. ProMedia keeps every frame, so if the GIF is still a still, the WebP itself was static; the result card shows the frame count so you can check.
Animated WebP vs GIF: which is better?
Animated WebP has more colours, smoother transparency and smaller files. GIF plays almost everywhere, including older apps and email. Use WebP on websites and GIF wherever WebP is not accepted.
Why is the GIF bigger than the WebP?
GIF compresses far less efficiently than WebP and limits each frame to 256 colours, which is why dithering is used to fake extra shades. In our test a 458 KB animated WebP became a 632 KB GIF.
Can I convert many WebP files to GIF at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many WebP files as you like; each is converted with the same settings and you can download them individually or together as one ZIP.
