Settings explained
- Lossless
- Pixel-perfect conversion; still usually smaller than the GIF.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
- WebAssembly codecs
- Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.
- FFmpeg (when needed)
- Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.
Lossy or lossless: how much smaller is WebP than GIF?
Lossy WebP gives the bigger saving, lossless WebP the exact picture. Google measured GIFs converted to lossy WebP at 64% smaller on average and lossless WebP at 19% smaller. Real savings depend on the GIF; the rows below are our own measurements on two test animations.
| Test GIF | Lossy, 80% quality | Lossless |
|---|---|---|
| 480×270, 45 frames, 779 KB | 458 KB (41% smaller) | 594 KB (24% smaller) |
| 320×180, 30 frames, 286 KB | 243 KB (15% smaller) | 262 KB (9% smaller) |
Will converting GIF to WebP lose quality?
With Lossless on, no: every pixel of every frame is stored exactly, and the file is still usually smaller than the GIF. With lossy WebP at the default 80%, the frames are re-compressed and fine detail can soften slightly, but most GIFs look the same, because a GIF only ever had 256 colours per frame to begin with. Lower the quality to compress the GIF to WebP even further for thumbnails and previews.
Do all browsers support animated WebP?
All current major browsers do. Google lists animated WebP support from Chrome 32, Edge 18, Firefox 65 and Safari 14, which covers practically every visitor to a website today. Outside the browser, support varies: some older apps, editors and email clients still only animate GIF, so keep the original GIF for those, or convert back with WebP to GIF.
Why convert your GIFs with ProMedia
- Transparency and timing kept. Transparent pixels stay transparent, and each frame keeps its own delay and the loop count.
- Batch and offline. Select dozens of GIFs in one go; after the first visit the converter works without a connection.
- Nothing leaves your device. The browser re-encodes each GIF locally, so client artwork and unreleased designs are never sent anywhere.
Tips & troubleshooting
Making a WebP from a video rather than a GIF? The animated WebP maker skips the GIF step and keeps millions of colours.
If the WebP is bigger than the GIF, which can happen with tiny, well-optimised GIFs, keep the GIF or try lossy at a lower quality.
Need the smallest possible file for a page that accepts video? GIF to MP4 is often smaller still.

Do all browsers support animated WebP?
Yes, all current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Some older desktop apps and email clients still need GIF.
Will converting GIF to WebP lose quality?
