ASS to SRT Converter
Convert ASS to SRT, or older SSA files, when a TV, phone or editor cannot show styled subtitles. Every dialogue line keeps its text and timing, italics and bold survive, and lines meant for the top of the screen keep a {\an8} tag. Fonts, positions, karaoke and drawings are removed cleanly instead of showing up as code. Nothing is uploaded.

Settings explained
- Frame rate
- MicroDVD stores frame numbers, so it needs the video’s frame rate.
- Input text encoding
- Output is always UTF-8, which fixes garbled accents in most players.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Built-in browser features
- Uses standard browser features only — nothing extra to download.
ASS vs SRT: what each format can show
ASS is a typesetting format and SRT is a plain caption list. That is why ASS looks better in a capable player and why SRT plays almost everywhere. Converting trades the look for compatibility.
| Feature | ASS / SSA | SRT |
|---|---|---|
| Fonts and sizes | Any font, per style or per word | Chosen by the player |
| Colours and outlines | Full control, per style | Basic <font color> only |
| Placement | Exact pixel positions, rotation, movement | Bottom, or top with {\an8} where supported |
| Karaoke and effects | Yes (\k, fades, blur) | No |
| Vector drawings | Yes (\p shapes) | No |
| Plays on | VLC, mpv, MPC-HC, Kodi | Nearly every player, TV and editor |
What is an ASS subtitle file?
An ASS file is a subtitle script in Advanced SubStation Alpha, the v4+ version of the older SubStation Alpha (SSA) format. It has three parts: script info, a list of named styles (font, size, colours, outline, alignment) and an events list in which each dialogue line can override its style with tags in curly braces.
Anime fansubs and many MKV releases use ASS because typesetters, usually working in Aegisub, can match signs and on-screen text. SSA and ASS are converted the same way here.
What happens to each part of the ASS file
| In the ASS file | In the SRT |
|---|---|
| Dialogue lines | One SRT line each, same start and end |
| Comment lines | Skipped |
\N line breaks | Real line breaks |
\i1, \b1, \u1 | <i>, <b>, <u> |
Inline colour \c&H00FFFF& | <font color="#ffff00"> |
\an8 or a style aligned to the top | {\an8} at the start of the line (other positions keep their own code, such as {\an7} for top left) |
\pos, \move, \fad, \k, \fn, \fs, blur, borders | Removed |
\p1 vector drawings | Removed with their drawing commands |
Signs, songs and overlapping lines
Typeset releases often show a translated sign at the top while someone speaks at the bottom. Both lines are kept: the sign becomes its own SRT line with {\an8}, so VLC and most modern players still put it at the top. Song lyrics are kept as normal lines too.
If you only want the dialogue, open the result in the subtitle editor online and delete the signs, or remove the sound and lyric lines with the SRT cleaner.
Tips & troubleshooting
Want the subtitles to look exactly like the ASS file everywhere? Burn subtitles into video with “Use ASS styles” on instead of converting.
The ASS track is still inside an MKV? Save it first with extract subtitles from MKV, choosing Original to keep it as ASS.
Need VTT for a web player instead? The subtitle converter turns ASS into WebVTT with the same rules.
ASS to SRT Converter FAQ
How do I convert ASS to SRT?
Drop the .ass file here and press Convert. Dialogue, timing, italics, bold and top placement are kept, and all other styling tags are removed. SSA files work the same way, and you can convert many files in one go.
Will ASS styling be kept in SRT?
Only the parts SRT can express: italics, bold, underline, inline colours and top-of-screen placement. Fonts, sizes, exact positions, karaoke and effects are dropped, because SubRip has no way to store them.
What is the difference between SSA and SRT?
SSA (SubStation Alpha) stores styles and lets each line set fonts, colours and positions. SRT stores only numbered lines, times and a little HTML-like markup. SSA looks richer; SRT is understood by far more devices.
Why are some lines at the top of the screen after converting?
They were placed at the top in the ASS file, usually signs or notes. The converter marks them with {\an8} so players keep them out of the dialogue. Delete the tag in a text editor if you want them at the bottom.
Is your subtitle file uploaded anywhere?
No. Your subtitle file is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
