SRT to VTT Converter

Convert SRT to VTT for HTML5 video, Vimeo and any web player. The converter adds the WEBVTT header, rewrites every timestamp, keeps italics and top-of-screen lines, and saves clean UTF-8, which WebVTT requires. Drop one file or a whole batch: the conversion runs in your browser, so your subtitles are never uploaded.

How to convert SRT to VTT

  1. Step 1: Drop your .srt files on the box above. Batches are fine.

  2. Step 2: Press Convert. Each SRT comes back as a .vtt with the same name; take them singly or press Download all (.zip).

  3. Step 3: Accents broken in the result? Pick the right Input text encoding under Advanced settings (Western, Cyrillic, Arabic…) and convert again.

Frame rate
MicroDVD stores frame numbers, so it needs the video’s frame rate.
Input text encoding
Output is always UTF-8, which fixes garbled accents in most players.

SRT vs VTT: which one should you use?

Use VTT for anything that plays in a web page and SRT for everything else. The two formats store the same lines and times; VTT adds a header and optional positioning, and browsers accept only VTT for the HTML <track> element.

What is a VTT file?

A VTT file is a subtitle or caption file in WebVTT (Web Video Text Tracks), the W3C format built for the HTML5 <video> element. It starts with the word WEBVTT, uses dots in its timestamps and can place each cue anywhere on the screen.

Browsers do not read SRT natively. That is the whole reason to convert SRT to WebVTT: the text and timing stay the same, but the file becomes something a web player will actually load.

What changes in your file

Nothing is retimed and no line is lost. These are the only differences you will see when you open the result:

Add the VTT file to a website or Vimeo

HTML5 video

Put <track kind="subtitles" src="film.vtt" srclang="en" label="English"> inside your <video> element. Serve the .vtt from the same site as the page; browsers block caption files from other sites unless CORS allows them.

Vimeo and web players

Vimeo, video.js and Plyr take WebVTT files directly. Upload the converted file in the player’s captions settings and pick its language.

Embed it in a video file

To ship the subtitles inside a WebM, add subtitles to video and choose WebM: the track is stored as WebVTT.

Tips & troubleshooting

SRT to VTT Converter FAQ

What is the difference between VTT and SRT?

Very little in the text itself. VTT starts with a WEBVTT header, writes milliseconds after a dot instead of a comma, must be UTF-8 and supports cue positioning and CSS styling. SRT is simpler and works in more desktop software.

Is SRT or VTT better?

Neither is better in general. VTT is required for browser video and gives you positioning; SRT is the safer choice for players, TVs and video editors. Keep both: converting either way takes a second.

Can I convert SRT to VTT without software?

Yes. This page is the software: it runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on a computer or a phone, with nothing to install. Converting by hand means editing every timestamp, which is slow and easy to get wrong.

Why did the colours from my SRT disappear?

WebVTT has no <font> tag, so colour tags are removed to keep the file valid. Give the cues a CSS class or style the ::cue pseudo-element on your page to colour them.

Is your subtitle file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your subtitle file is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
