VTT to SRT Converter

Convert VTT to SRT so captions from the web, Zoom or Teams open in desktop players, video editors and TVs. Timestamps are rewritten, lines are numbered, word-by-word timing and web-only markup are stripped, and a line placed at the top of the screen stays there. Convert a whole batch at once in your browser; the files are never uploaded.

MicroDVD stores frame numbers, so it needs the video’s frame rate.

What changes when WebVTT becomes SRT

Every caption keeps its text and its exact timing. What goes is the web-only layer: the header, style blocks, cue names and inline markup that SubRip has no place for.

Ruby annotations (small reading aids above Japanese text) are dropped, since SRT cannot show them.

What is a VTT file, and where do they come from?

A VTT file holds captions in WebVTT, the subtitle format browsers use for online video. You usually end up with one by downloading captions from a video site or a course platform, or by saving the transcript of a Zoom or Microsoft Teams recording, which both export .vtt.

Those files play fine in a browser but often not in a video editor, a TV’s media player or older desktop software, which expect SubRip. Converting VTT to SRT keeps the words and timing and swaps the wrapper.

Are VTT and SRT the same?

They are close cousins, not the same file. Both list timed lines of text, so a VTT file renamed to .srt sometimes works, but the dots in its timestamps, the WEBVTT header and any inline tags make stricter software reject it or show the tags as text. A real conversion avoids that.

Convert VTT to SRT offline, on any computer

After your first visit this page works without a connection, so you can convert caption files on a train or behind a strict work firewall. It runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS, and on phones too. There is no app to install and no account to create.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Captions full of [Music] or speaker names from a meeting transcript? Clean them with the SRT cleaner after converting.

  • Need a readable transcript rather than subtitles? SRT to TXT turns the VTT straight into paragraphs.

  • Publishing the subtitles on a website later? Keep the original, or convert back with SRT to VTT.

  • Lines out of step with the video after editing? Subtitle Sync shifts or stretches the whole file.

VTT to SRT Converter FAQ

How do I convert VTT to SRT?

Drop the .vtt files on this page and press Convert. The timestamps are rewritten with commas, every caption is numbered, and the WebVTT header and style blocks are removed. Download the SRT files individually or as a ZIP.

My VTT has word-by-word timing. Will the SRT work?

Yes. Inline timestamps such as <00:00:05.120> and colour classes are removed, so each cue shows its complete line for its full duration. That is what desktop players and editors expect.

Are speaker names kept?

The <v Name> voice tag is removed and the spoken text is kept. If the name is written into the text itself, for example ANNA: Hello, it stays; the SRT cleaner can strip those labels.

How do I convert VTT to SRT offline?

Open this page once while online. It is then cached by your browser, and conversions run locally even in airplane mode, because no step needs a server.

Is your caption file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your caption file is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
