Blur Face in Videos and Photos Automatically
AIBlur face after face automatically, in videos and photos alike. A small face detector finds every face, follows it from frame to frame and covers it with a blur, pixelation or a black box. Use it to anonymise bystanders, pupils or witnesses before you share footage. It all runs in your browser, so the footage is never uploaded and there is no watermark.

How it runs
- Vision model
- A compact computer-vision model runs locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to an AI service.
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
Blur, pixelate or black box: which face blur?
Blur is the least distracting for viewers and suits street scenes and vlogs. Pixelate gives the familiar mosaic look of news footage. Black box hides the face completely and is the safest choice for sensitive material, because a weak blur or large pixels can leave a face recognisable. Raise Strength until you cannot tell who it is.
| Effect | Looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Blur (default) | A soft blur over the face and hair | Bystanders in vlogs, street and event footage |
| Pixelate | Coarse square blocks | A news-style look; censoring faces in screenshots |
| Black box | A solid black rectangle | Witnesses, minors, anything sensitive |
| Extra margin (0–60 %, default 20 %) | Grows each box | Covering hair and ears, not just the face |
How to blur faces in a video
Drop the video and press Blur. The tool scans the video first: frames are scaled to at most 960 pixels wide and checked with YuNet, a 233 KB face detector that ships with the site, so there is nothing to download. Each face becomes a track that is smoothed, bridges short gaps when a face turns away for a moment, and starts slightly before and ends slightly after the face is seen. Then the video is re-encoded with the effect drawn on every frame, and the sound is copied.
| Setting | Value | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Quality: Fast | 6 scans per second | Quickest; may lag behind fast movement |
| Quality: Balanced (default) | 12 scans per second | Good for most footage |
| Quality: Best | 15–30 scans per second (follows the video) | Fast motion, sports, handheld shots |
| Detection sensitivity | 10–95 % (default 60 %) | Higher finds smaller and turned faces, with more false positives |
How to blur a face in a photo
Drop the photo and press Blur. Photos are scanned as a whole and again in overlapping tiles, which finds the small faces at the back of a group shot. The result keeps its format: a JPG comes back as JPG, a PNG as PNG. Drop a whole folder to blur faces in many photos at once.
To blur something that is not a face, such as a number plate or a screen, draw boxes by hand with blur image, or pixelate image for a mosaic.
Will it catch every face?
It catches most faces seen from the front and side. Very small faces, faces turned far away, and faces covered by masks, hands or hair can be missed for a moment or entirely. Always watch the result before you publish sensitive footage. If a face slips through, raise Detection sensitivity and Extra margin and run it again, or switch to Black box with a wide margin.
Do you have to blur faces on YouTube?
YouTube has no rule that every face must be blurred, but people who are identifiable in a video can ask YouTube to remove it on privacy grounds, and laws on filming people differ by country and setting. Schools, care settings and footage of children usually need consent or anonymising. When in doubt, blur bystanders before uploading; it takes one pass here.
Blur faces on iPhone, Android or a computer
- iPhone: open this page in Safari and pick videos or photos from your library. Short clips are fine on a phone.
- Android: use Chrome; the result saves to Downloads.
- Mac and Windows: drag files from Finder or File Explorer. Long or 4K videos are much quicker on a computer.
- Any device: no app to install, nothing uploaded, no watermark.
Tips & troubleshooting
Faces are not the only giveaway. Strip location and camera data from photos with remove metadata from photo before sharing.
For a fixed area in a video, such as a whiteboard or a licence plate on a parked car, blur part of video is quicker.
Bleeping names too? Run the blurred video through the bleep censor.
Group photo with tiny faces: raise Detection sensitivity to 75–80 % before running.
Auto Blur Faces (Photo & Video) FAQ
How do I blur faces in a video?
Drop the video here, choose Blur, Pixelate or Black box and press Blur. Every face is detected and tracked through the video, and the effect is drawn on each frame. The sound is copied, and nothing leaves your device.
How do I blur a face in a photo?
Drop the photo and press Blur. All faces are found automatically, including small ones in group shots. JPG, PNG and WebP photos keep their format; HEIC and AVIF come back as JPG. For a single face you want to choose yourself, draw a box with the blur image tool instead.
Can I blur faces in a video on iPhone?
Yes. Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone and pick the video from your library. The face detector is tiny, so it starts at once; long or 4K videos simply take longer on a phone than on a computer.
Is there an app to blur faces?
You do not need one. This page works in the browser on phones and computers, detects faces automatically, and handles videos and photos in batches without a watermark or an account.
How do I pixelate a face?
Choose Pixelate as the effect and raise Strength until the face is unrecognisable. Larger blocks hide more. The same automatic detection applies, so every face in the video or photo is pixelated.
Is your footage uploaded anywhere?
No. Your footage is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
