Blur Part of a Video – Blur, Pixelate or Censor

Blur part of a video by drawing boxes over whatever must stay private: a face, a licence plate, a house number, a phone screen or a name badge. Choose a soft blur, chunky pixelation or a solid black box, set the strength, and every frame is processed on your own device. Because the footage is sensitive, it is never uploaded.

GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.

Blur, pixelate or black box: which hides best?

All three hide detail, but not equally. A black box removes it completely, strong pixelation leaves only coarse colour blocks, and a light blur can leave large text readable. Match the effect to how sensitive the information is.

Ways to censor part of a video
EffectWhat viewers seeHow safeUse it for
BlurA soft smear that blends with the shotSafe at high strength; light blur on big text can stay legibleFaces in the background, house numbers, brand logos
PixelateLarge square blocksSafe when blocks are bigger than the detailsThe classic censor look for faces and screens
Black boxA solid black rectangleSafest: nothing of the original remainsPasswords, ID cards, bank details, addresses
Strength scales with the size of the video, so the same setting gives a similar look on 720p and 4K footage.

How to blur a face or a licence plate in a video

Draw a box around the face or plate, leaving a small margin for movement, and pick Blur or Pixelate at a strength of 60% or more. The boxes stay in the same place for the whole clip, so this works best for things that do not move much: a parked car, a person sitting at a table, a screen on a desk, a dashcam plate in a fixed corner.

For a face that moves around the frame, use Blur Faces, which detects and follows faces automatically. Another option for a clip where someone moves only occasionally is to cut it with the video splitter, blur each part with its own box and join the parts again.

Can blurred or pixelated video be undone?

Not when the effect is strong enough: the processed frames only contain the blurred or blocky pixels, and a black box contains nothing at all.

The risk is a box that is too small or too weak. A light blur over large printed text can leave words readable, and a box that misses the edge of a moving plate for a few frames shows it in clear. Check the result frame by frame for anything critical, and use the black box for data such as card numbers or passwords.

Blur part of a video on iPhone, Android or a computer

The Photos app on iPhone and most Android gallery editors have no blur tool for video. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, pick the clip and draw the boxes with your finger; on a computer, drag them with the mouse. The result is an H.264 MP4 with the original sound copied, ready for Instagram, TikTok or YouTube. Nothing leaves the device, which matters when the footage shows other people or private places.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Blurring a still image instead? Blur Image does the same for photos and screenshots.

  • Want to remove a small static logo or date stamp rather than blur it? Remove logo from video fills it in from the surrounding pixels.

  • Need the background soft and the person sharp? That needs a cut-out, which the video background remover makes with AI.

  • Cropping the area away entirely is sometimes cleaner: crop the video if the private part sits at an edge.

Blur Video FAQ

Can I blur out part of a video for free?

Yes. Draw the boxes, choose blur, pixelate or a black box and press Process. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no account, and the video is processed on your device.

How do I blur part of a video on iPhone?

Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone and choose the clip from Photo Library. Draw a box over the area with your finger, set the effect and press Process, then save the result to Photos.

How do I censor a video?

Use Black box for anything that must be unreadable, such as documents or screens, and Pixelate for faces. Draw a box over each item; all boxes are applied to every frame of the clip.

Can the blur follow a moving object?

No, boxes drawn here stay fixed. For faces, Blur Faces tracks them automatically. For other moving objects, split the clip into short parts and give each part its own box.

Is your video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your video is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
