Circle Crop: Crop an Image Into a Circle

Circle crop any photo in a few seconds: drag a square over the face, logo or object you want and download a round PNG whose corners are transparent. It suits profile pictures, team pages, email signatures, slides and stickers. The crop runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded, and you can do a batch of headshots in one go.

Round PNG or square photo: which one to upload where

Apps that already show avatars as circles (WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Discord and most others) want a square upload and cut the circle themselves. A pre-cut round PNG is the right choice wherever the picture is shown exactly as it is: web pages, documents, slides, email signatures and stickers.

Where a circle crop helps
DestinationUploadWhy
Messaging and social profile photosSquare crop (or this round PNG)The app masks it to a circle anyway; transparent corners just stay hidden
Website team page, about pageRound PNG or WebPShows as a circle on any background with no CSS needed
Slides, documents, postersRound PNGOffice apps and design tools keep the transparency
Email signatureRound PNGMail apps show the image as it is, so the round shape must be in the file
Stickers and logosRound PNG or WebPTransparent corners let the shape sit on top of anything
Animated avatar (GIF)Same as inputEvery frame is cut round and the GIF keeps playing
Some apps convert uploads to JPG, which has no transparency; there the corners may turn white or black.

How to make a round profile picture

Start from a photo where your face is well lit and not too close to the edge. Place the square so the top of your head and your chin both sit comfortably inside the circle; a round crop cuts more off the corners than you expect, so leave some space around the hair and shoulders. Press Crop and use the PNG.

If the background is busy, cut it out first with the background remover and then crop the transparent result into a circle. You get a clean round portrait that works on light and dark pages alike.

Does a circle crop keep transparency?

Yes, when it is saved as PNG or WebP. Everything outside the circle is fully transparent, so the picture looks round on any background. JPG cannot store transparency at all, which is why a JPG photo comes out as PNG here even with Same as input; if you force JPG on the main crop image page, the corners are filled with white instead.

What size should a profile picture be?

When you crop to a circle, the round image is exactly the size of your crop box, so a box 1000 px wide gives a 1000×1000 PNG. Avatars are displayed small, but high-density phone screens show them at two or three times their nominal size, so a few hundred pixels is a sensible minimum and anything from about 500 to 1000 px has room to spare. Check the platform’s own help page if it states a size.

To make a big crop smaller without losing the transparency, run the PNG through the image resizer with Save as left on Same as input.

Why circle crop images here

  • No upload. Headshots and ID-style portraits stay on your device; the crop happens in the browser.
  • A batch of headshots. Add several photos of the same size and the same box is cut from each, handy for a team page.
  • Clean files. The round copy carries no camera details or GPS location.
  • Ovals too. Need an ellipse instead? On crop image, pick Circle with a 4:5 or 16:9 ratio.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Want a round favicon or app icon? Crop here, then turn the PNG into icons with the favicon generator.

  • Centre the eyes slightly above the middle of the circle; it looks more natural than a perfectly centred face.

  • For a coloured ring behind a cut-out portrait, remove the background, place the person on a colour, then crop the circle.

  • Photos of different sizes in one batch? Crop them one at a time, because the box is set in pixels.

Circle Crop FAQ

How do I crop a picture into a circle?

To crop a photo into a circle, drop it here, move the square box over the part you want and press Crop. You get a round PNG with transparent corners, ready to download.

How do I make a round profile picture?

Use a well-lit photo, place the square so your head and a little of your shoulders fit inside the circle, and press Crop. For apps that show avatars as circles anyway, a square crop is enough.

Does circle crop keep transparency?

Yes. Saved as PNG or WebP, everything outside the circle is transparent. JPG cannot hold transparency, so a JPG photo is saved as PNG automatically.

What size should a profile picture be?

Big enough for sharp display on high-density screens: roughly 500 to 1000 px square is plenty for most platforms. The output is the size of your crop box, and the image resizer can scale it down.

Can I crop a GIF into a circle?

Yes. Choose Same as input under Save as and every frame is cut round, so the GIF keeps its animation and transparent corners.

Is your photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Your photo is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
