Crop Image

Crop image files by dragging a box, typing exact pixels or locking a ratio such as 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9. Switch the shape to Circle for a round profile picture with transparent corners. The photo is cropped in your browser, never uploaded, and the same box can be applied to a whole batch of screenshots at once.

How it runs

GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
WebAssembly codecs
Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.

Which aspect ratio should you crop to?

Pick the ratio of the place the picture is going, not the one the camera used. Square suits avatars and grids, 4:5 fills the most of an Instagram feed, 9:16 fills a phone screen and 16:9 fits video thumbnails. The last column shows the biggest box each ratio leaves from a 12-megapixel phone photo.

Crop ratios, where they are used and the largest crop from a 4032×3024 photo
RatioTypical useLargest crop (px)
1:1 (square)Profile pictures, Instagram square posts, product tiles3024×3024
4:5Instagram portrait posts, the tallest feed shape2419×3024
9:16Stories, Reels and Shorts covers, phone wallpapers1701×3024
16:9YouTube thumbnails, slides, desktop wallpapers4032×2268
4:3Most phone cameras and classic slide decks4032×3024
3:2DSLR photos and 6×4 in prints4032×2688
With a fixed ratio, a box you draw in another shape is trimmed around its centre until it matches.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

No. A crop throws away the pixels outside the box and keeps the rest exactly as they were, with no resampling. The result is saved once: JPGs at 92% quality, which is not visibly different, and PNGs losslessly. What does change is the pixel count, so a tight crop of a small area leaves fewer pixels to print or zoom into.

If you need the cropped part bigger afterwards, the AI image upscaler can add detail; stretching it with a resizer will look soft.

Crop an image to an exact size in pixels

Below the preview, the crop box has four number fields: X and Y for the top-left corner, and Width and Height for the size, all in the image’s own pixels. Type 1080 and 1080 and you get exactly that, taken from wherever you place the box.

When the area you want is larger than the final size, for example a 2400 px square that must become 600×600, crop first and then scale the result with the image resizer. If you do not mind the crop being centred, the resizer’s Fill (crop) mode does both in one step.

How to crop a picture into a circle

Set Shape to Circle. The crop box becomes a square (unless you pick another ratio, which gives an oval) and everything outside the circle turns transparent. JPG photos are saved as PNG for this, because JPG cannot store transparency; PNG, WebP and GIF inputs keep their own format. The dedicated circle crop page is set up for round pictures by default and has tips for profile photos.

Crop photos for Instagram without an app

Choose 4:5 for a portrait feed post, 1:1 for square or 9:16 for a story, place the box over the part that matters and press Crop. Instagram accepts the cropped file as it is. If it also needs exact pixel dimensions, run it through the social media image resizer afterwards, which knows the size of every platform format.

Crop a photo on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac

Every system has a basic photo cropper built in. This one adds exact pixel fields, circle crops and batch cropping, and it behaves the same everywhere.

iPhone and iPad

In Photos, tap Edit, then Crop, and choose a ratio from the top bar. For a circle or exact pixels, open this page in Safari and pick the photo from your library.

Android

Google Photos has Edit → Crop with ratios. Here, tap the drop zone in Chrome to pick a photo; the crop box works with one finger and the number fields with the keyboard.

Windows 10 and 11

The Photos app crops one picture at a time under Edit image. To crop a folder of same-size screenshots identically, drop them all here.

Mac

In Preview, drag a selection and choose Tools → Crop. This page is quicker for exact pixel sizes, ratios and circles.

Why crop pictures with ProMedia

  • One box, many files. The crop is set in pixels and applied to every image you add, ideal for screenshots that share a size.
  • Animated GIFs stay animated. Every frame is cropped, so the result still plays.
  • Upright, private results. Phone photos are cropped the way they display, location data is not carried into the copy, and nothing is uploaded.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Straighten a tilted horizon with rotate image before cropping, so the crop does not need to cut deep into the corners.

  • Making a passport or visa photo? The passport photo maker frames the head to each country’s rules automatically.

  • Cropping clips instead of photos? Use crop video for MP4 and MOV files and crop GIF for animations.

  • To crop photos of different sizes to one shape in a batch, use the resizer with Fill (crop); a pixel box only lines up on images of the same size.

  • Keep a little space around a subject you will post: some apps trim the edges again in their previews.

Crop Image FAQ

Does cropping reduce image quality?

No. The pixels inside the box are kept exactly; only the outside is removed. JPGs are re-saved at 92% quality, which looks the same, and PNGs are saved losslessly. The image does get fewer pixels, so very tight crops print smaller.

How do I crop a picture into a circle?

Choose Circle under Shape, drag the square box over the face or logo and press Crop. You get a round PNG with transparent corners. The circle crop page is set up for this by default.

How do I crop an image to an exact size in pixels?

Type the Width and Height in the fields under the preview, then move the box with X and Y or by dragging it. The result is exactly that many pixels.

How do I crop a photo on iPhone or Mac?

Photos (Edit, then Crop) on iPhone and Preview (Tools, then Crop) on Mac handle simple crops. For exact pixels, circles or a whole batch, open this page in Safari; it works on both.

Can I crop photos for Instagram without an app?

Yes. Pick 4:5 for a portrait post, 1:1 for square or 9:16 for a story, press Crop, and upload the file straight from your phone’s Downloads.

Can I crop many images the same way?

Yes. The crop box is in pixels and applied to every image you add, which suits screenshots from one device. For photos of mixed sizes, use the image resizer’s Fill (crop) mode instead.

Is your image uploaded anywhere?

No. Your image is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
