How to convert PNG to ICO
Step 1: Add a square logo, ideally 512 px or larger. PNG with transparency works best; JPG and SVG are fine too.
Step 2: Under Output, choose favicon.ico for one file or Full icon set for a website-ready folder.
Step 3: Under Sizes inside the .ico, keep Favicon for websites or choose Windows icon for 16–256 px.

Which icon sizes do you need?
For a website, a favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 px plus a 180 px Apple touch icon and 192 and 512 px PNGs covers browsers, phones and installed web apps. For a Windows program, shortcut or folder icon, the .ico needs sizes up to 256 px so large icon views stay sharp. This tool builds either.

What is an ICO file?
An ICO file is the Windows icon format: one file that holds several pictures of the same icon at different sizes, so the system can pick the sharpest one for each place. Entries can be up to 256 × 256 pixels with full transparency. Websites adopted the format for favicon.ico, the little picture browsers show in tabs and bookmarks.

How to make a favicon for your website
Choose Full icon set and press Create. What size should a favicon be?
Design it at 512 × 512 pixels or larger and let the tool scale it down; that one source covers every size above. Keep the shape simple and bold, because at 16 × 16 there are only 256 pixels to work with: a single letter or symbol reads far better than a full logo with text. Use Padding if the artwork touches the edges, and a coloured Background if a transparent logo disappears on dark browser themes.
The Apple touch icon is always saved with a solid background (white unless you pick a colour), because iOS fills transparent areas of home-screen icons with black.
How to convert PNG to ICO on Windows 11
Windows can use .ico files everywhere but has no built-in tool to create them. Open this page in Edge or Chrome, add the PNG, choose Windows icon under Sizes inside the .ico and press Create. With only the .ico selected, the file is named after your image (logo.png becomes logo.ico).
