GIF Speed Changer

This GIF speed changer makes an animation faster or slower by rewriting the delay stored with each frame. The pictures themselves are not touched, so the change is lossless and takes a moment even on long GIFs. Pick anything from 0.25× to 4× speed; animated WebP and APNG files work too, and nothing is uploaded.

Frame delays are clamped to 20 ms, the fastest browsers play.

Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.

How it runs

GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
WebAssembly codecs
Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.

How a speed change rewrites each GIF frame delay

Every GIF frame carries its own delay in hundredths of a second. Changing speed divides each delay by the factor you choose, rounded so the total length stays accurate. Delays never go below 20 ms, which is where speeding up stops.

Average frame delay after a speed change
Original delay0.5× (slower)2× (faster)4× (faster)
100 ms (10 fps)200 ms50 ms25 ms
50 ms (20 fps)100 ms25 ms20 ms (capped)
40 ms (25 fps)80 ms20 ms20 ms (capped)
20 ms (50 fps)40 ms20 ms (capped)20 ms (capped)
GIF stores delays in 10 ms steps, so a 25 ms target alternates between 30 and 20 ms frames. “Capped” rows could not go faster.

Why does my GIF stop getting faster?

Because browsers have a speed limit. Major browsers do not play very short delays as written: a frame stored with a 0 or 10 ms delay is shown for about 100 ms instead, which would make a “faster” GIF suddenly slow. ProMedia therefore never writes a delay below 20 ms, the shortest one browsers honour. Once every frame is at 20 ms, the GIF is as fast as it can play; to go further, remove frames with Manual mode in the GIF compressor.

Change GIF speed without losing quality

Speed is the one GIF edit that needs no re-encoding. ProMedia changes only the timing values inside the file and copies every frame’s image data byte for byte, so colours, sharpness and file size stay the same. The result card confirms this as Lossless (frames untouched) and shows the old and new length.

Speed vs frame rate: what changes

Changing speed keeps the same frames and shows them for a shorter or longer time, so a 2× GIF has the same number of frames and half the length. To change how many frames a GIF has, skip frames in the GIF compressor; to make a new GIF at a different frame rate from the source video, use video to GIF.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Want a GIF that plays backwards or bounces back and forth? Use reverse GIF after changing the speed.

  • For videos rather than GIFs, change video speed does the same job and can keep the sound.

  • A slowed-down GIF can look jerky because each frame stays on screen longer; 0.5× is usually the slowest that still feels like motion.

Change GIF Speed FAQ

How do I speed up a GIF?

Drop the GIF on this page, drag the Speed slider above 1× (2× plays twice as fast) and press Apply. Only the frame delays change, so the GIF keeps its quality and size.

How do I slow down a GIF?

Set the Speed slider below 1×, for example 0.5× for half speed, and press Apply. Each frame stays on screen longer; the frames themselves are not changed.

Why does my GIF stop getting faster past a certain speed?

Browsers play delays of 10 ms or less as roughly 100 ms, so ProMedia never writes a delay shorter than 20 ms. When every frame is already at that minimum, the GIF cannot play any faster without dropping frames.

Can I change GIF speed without losing quality?

Yes. Only the timing values in the file are rewritten and every frame’s image data is copied unchanged, so the speed change is completely lossless.
