GIF Resizer – Resize Animated GIFs

This GIF resizer scales every frame of an animated GIF, by percentage or to exact pixels, and keeps the animation’s timing and loop exactly as they were. Shrink a GIF for an emoji or a chat, or enlarge a small one for a slide. Animated WebP and APNG files work too. Resizing happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.

How it runs

GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
WebAssembly codecs
Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.

What resizing does to a GIF’s file size

File size follows the number of pixels, and pixels follow the square of the scale. Halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels, so a GIF at 50% usually ends up at roughly a quarter of its size.

Scale, pixels and file size
ScalePixels per frameTypical file size
25%6.3%About a sixteenth; good for thumbnails and emoji
50% (default)25%About a quarter
75%56.3%A little over half
150%225%More than double, with no new detail
200%400%About four times, with no new detail
Measured: a 480×270 animated GIF of 779 KB became 189 KB at 50% (240×135), with all 45 frames and the same 3-second timing.

Resize a GIF without losing the animation

Every frame is decoded to a complete picture, scaled with high-quality smoothing and encoded again, and each frame keeps its own delay. The loop setting is copied too, so a GIF that played three times still plays three times. Large reductions are done in halving steps rather than one jump, which avoids the jagged, shimmering edges a one-step shrink gives.

The file type stays the same: a GIF comes back as a GIF and an animated WebP as WebP. APNG files come back as GIF.

Percentage or pixels: which to use

Both modes resize every frame the same way; they only differ in how you describe the new size.

Percentage

Pick 10% to 200%. The quickest way to make a GIF smaller for a chat when you do not need an exact size.

Pixels, lock on

Type a width, a height or both. With both, the GIF is fitted inside that box and keeps its shape, so a 480×270 GIF in a 128×128 box becomes 128×72.

Pixels, lock off

Type both numbers to force an exact size, even if it stretches the picture. Crop to the right shape first with crop GIF to avoid distortion.

Resize a GIF for Discord, Slack or Twitch

Chat platforms show emoji and stickers at fixed sizes, so resize to the size they expect before compressing. Square sizes need a square GIF: crop it to 1:1 first.

Common target sizes for animated GIFs
WhereResize toFile size limit
Discord emoji128×128 px (recommended)256 KB
Discord sticker320×320 px (exact)512 KB
Slack emojiA small square128 KB
Twitch emotesThe exact square sizes in Twitch’s current emote guidelinesSee Twitch’s guidelines
After resizing, fit the file limit with compress GIF for Discord or the GIF compressor.

Does resizing a GIF make the file smaller?

Yes. When you scale a GIF down, the file shrinks roughly in line with the pixel count in the table above, though the exact saving depends on the picture. Enlarging does the opposite: the file grows with the pixel count, and the GIF gets softer rather than sharper, because no resizer can add detail that was never there.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Need to change GIF size in KB rather than pixels? The GIF compressor hits a KB or MB target and only scales as a last resort.

  • On an iPhone or Android phone, open this page in the browser and tap the drop zone; the resized GIF saves to Files or Downloads.

  • Resizing a still image instead of an animation? The image resizer handles JPG, PNG and WebP photos.

  • The largest output is 4,096 px per side, which is far beyond what any chat or website displays.

Resize GIF FAQ

How do I resize a GIF without losing the animation?

Drop it on this page, choose a percentage or pixel size and press Resize. Every frame is scaled and re-encoded with its original delay and loop, so the animation plays exactly as before, just at the new size.

How do I resize a GIF for a Twitch emote?

Crop the GIF to a square first, then use Pixels mode with the lock on and type the exact sizes Twitch asks for in its current emote guidelines, one size at a time. Download each version and upload them in Twitch’s creator dashboard.

How do I resize a GIF for Discord?

For an emoji, resize to 128×128 px; for a sticker, to exactly 320×320 px. Then compress it under 256 KB or 512 KB with the Discord GIF compressor.

Does resizing a GIF make the file smaller?

Yes. File size follows the pixel count, so 50% leaves about a quarter of the pixels and usually about a quarter of the size. In our test a 779 KB GIF became 189 KB at 50%.

Can I resize a GIF on iPhone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone and pick the GIF from Photos or Files, then press Resize. Save the result from Files to Photos with Share → Save Image so it still animates.
