Screenshot from Video – Save a Full-Resolution Frame

Take a screenshot from video files at their full resolution, without player buttons, screen scaling or a blurry pause frame. Scrub to the moment, step one frame at a time with the arrow keys, and save exactly that frame as a lossless PNG, a JPG or a WebP. A 4K video gives a 4K still. The video is decoded on your device and never uploaded.

Hardware video engine
Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.

Video frame grabber vs a normal screenshot

A screenshot of a paused player captures your screen, not the video. You get the screen’s resolution, any scaling and often the controls. Saving the frame here takes the decoded picture itself, pixel for pixel.

How to take a screenshot from a video without it being blurry

Blur in a still has two causes. Screen scaling is one: a 4K video in a small window is shrunk before the screenshot. Saving the frame here removes that.

Motion is the other: fast movement is blurred inside the frame itself, because the camera’s shutter was open while things moved. Step a few frames forward or back with the arrow keys to find the sharpest one, which is often the moment a movement pauses or changes direction. Save as PNG to avoid adding compression on top.

Why is a screenshot from a video darker?

Most often because the video is HDR, as many recent iPhone and Android clips are, and the still is not. PNG, JPG and WebP files from this tool are standard 8-bit images, so an HDR frame is converted to standard range and can look flatter or darker than on an HDR screen; how the conversion looks depends on your browser. If the clip plays normally but the still looks dim, raise the brightness of the image afterwards, or record in standard (SDR) video when stills matter.

Get a thumbnail from a video

Pick the frame you want as the cover, save it as JPG, and you have a thumbnail at the video’s resolution. YouTube thumbnails are 1280×720 pixels and must stay under 2 MB: a 1080p frame saved as JPG is usually well under that limit, and the image resizer can scale it to the exact size. Add a title on top with Add text to image.

Save a frame from a video on iPhone, Android or Windows 11

This page works the same in every modern browser. The built-in options are mostly screen captures.

iPhone

Pausing and pressing the side and volume buttons captures the screen, including any player overlay. In Safari here, choose the clip from Photo Library, step to the frame and save it to Photos.

Android

Google Photos can export a frame from its video editor. This page adds frame-by-frame stepping and a lossless PNG at the full resolution.

Windows 11

The Snipping Tool captures the screen, not the video. Drag the file into Chrome or Edge here, press the arrow keys to find the frame and save it.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Need many stills, every second or every frame? Video to JPG extracts them all and zips them.

  • Making the still bigger for print? The image upscaler enlarges it with AI on your device.

  • Crop the still to the part that matters with Crop Image.

Video Screenshot (Frame Grabber) FAQ

How do I take a high-resolution screenshot from a video?

Save the frame here instead of capturing the screen. The still has the video’s full resolution, for example 3840×2160 for 4K, with no player controls or scaling. Choose PNG to keep every pixel.

How do I save one frame from a video?

Drop the video, move to the moment on the timeline, fine-tune with the arrow keys and press Save. The file name includes the time of the frame, so you can find the same moment again.

Which format should I save the frame in?

PNG for editing, printing or anything you will process further, because it is lossless. JPG at the default 92% for sharing and thumbnails. WebP for the smallest file on websites.

Can I take a screenshot from a video on Android?

Yes. Open this page in Chrome, pick the clip from your gallery, step to the frame with the Previous and Next buttons and tap Save. The image is saved to Downloads.

Is your video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your video is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
