MP3 to M4A Converter
Convert MP3 to M4A when an app, device or workflow asks for AAC audio. Each MP3 is re-encoded as AAC in an .m4a file at the bitrate you pick, with its title, artist and cover art carried over, and a whole folder converts in one batch. It runs in your browser, so your music is never uploaded. One honest note first: converting cannot make an MP3 sound better.

How to convert MP3 to M4A
Step 1: Drop your MP3 files on the box above.
Step 2: Pick a Bitrate at or near the MP3’s own; 192 kbps suits most music, 256 kbps matches iTunes Store files.
Step 3: Press Convert. Tags and embedded cover art are copied into each M4A.
Step 4: Download the M4A files, or all of them as a ZIP.

Settings explained
- Bitrate
- 128 kbps is fine for speech, 192 kbps for music, 320 kbps is the MP3 maximum.
- OGG codec
- Godot, Unity and older players need Vorbis. Vorbis uses the FFmpeg engine (≈31 MB, downloaded once).
- Opus: Smaller
- Vorbis: Games, older players
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
- FFmpeg (when needed)
- Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.
Is M4A better than MP3?
The AAC codec in an M4A is more efficient than MP3, so a file made from the original recording sounds better at the same bitrate, especially below 128 kbps. That advantage does not apply when the source is already an MP3: the M4A can only keep what the MP3 kept. Convert for compatibility, not for quality.
| MP3 | M4A (AAC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Codec | MPEG Layer III | AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) |
| Quality from the original recording at 128 kbps | Good | A little better |
| Quality when made from an MP3 | — | Same as the MP3 at best |
| Standard audio in MP4 video | Rarely | Yes |
| Apple Music, iPhone, Android, browsers | Play it | Play it |
| iTunes Store downloads | — | AAC at 256 kbps |
Does converting MP3 to M4A improve quality?
No. The MP3 is decoded and the result encoded again as AAC, so the M4A inherits everything the MP3 encoder removed and adds a small loss of its own. At a bitrate equal to or above the MP3’s, that extra loss is very hard to hear; below it, the file gets smaller but noticeably worse.
Good reasons to convert anyway: an app or device that only accepts M4A or AAC, keeping a library in one format, or preparing a soundtrack for a video workflow where AAC is the norm. If you only want MP3s to play on an iPhone or in Apple Music, there is no need: both play MP3 directly.
What is the difference between M4A and AAC?
AAC is the codec, the method that compresses the sound. M4A is the file: an MPEG-4 container that holds the AAC audio along with tags and cover art. A plain .aac file has the same audio without the container, so it carries little metadata. Apple apps, Android and browsers all prefer the .m4a form, which is what this page writes.
Which bitrate to pick
| Your MP3 | Suggested M4A bitrate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 320 kbps music | 256 kbps | The iTunes Store’s own AAC rate; no audible difference |
| 192 kbps music | 192 kbps (default) | Keeps the extra loss inaudible |
| 128 kbps music | 128 kbps | Higher only makes the file bigger |
| Speech, audiobooks, podcasts | 64–96 kbps | Plenty for voice |
Convert MP3 to M4A on a Mac, Windows PC or iPhone
The steps are the same everywhere because the converter is a web page. On a Mac or PC, drag MP3s from Finder or File Explorer onto the drop zone in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. On an iPhone, open the page in Safari, tap the drop zone and choose the files in the Files app; the M4As are saved to Downloads. The Music app on a Mac can also create AAC versions of songs already in its library.
Why convert MP3 to M4A here
- Tags and artwork kept. Title, artist, album and cover art move into the M4A.
- Batch. A whole album or audiobook folder in one run.
- Private. Your music stays on your device, and the page works offline once loaded.
Tips & troubleshooting
Making an iPhone ringtone? The ringtone maker writes the AAC .m4r file directly, capped to the right length.
Need the opposite for an old player or car? Use M4A to MP3.
Want every option, including VBR and tag editing? The audio bitrate converter writes M4A as well.
MP3 to M4A Converter FAQ
Is M4A better than MP3?
From the same original recording, M4A (AAC) sounds slightly better at the same bitrate. Converted from an MP3, it cannot be better than that MP3. Convert only when something needs M4A.
Does converting MP3 to M4A improve quality?
No. Lost detail cannot be restored. At the same or a higher bitrate the M4A sounds like the MP3; at a lower bitrate it is smaller and a bit worse.
Can I use M4A files in Apple Music or iTunes?
Yes, M4A with AAC audio is Apple’s own standard format. Apple Music also plays MP3, so convert only if you want your library in one format or another app needs AAC.
Can I turn an MP3 audiobook into one M4A file?
Yes, in two steps. Join the chapter MP3s with the audio joiner, choosing M4A under Save as, and you get one AAC file. Chapter markers are not added, so note where each chapter starts if you need them.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Decoding the MP3 and encoding the M4A both happen in your browser, so your music never leaves your device.
