Remove Silence From Audio
Remove silence from audio automatically: long pauses, dead air before the first word and gaps between takes are found and cut, while a little natural breathing room is kept so speech does not sound rushed. Tune what counts as silence and how long a gap must be, then download a tighter podcast, lecture or voice recording. It runs in your browser with no upload.

How to remove silence from audio
Step 1: Drop your recording on the box above (MP3, WAV, M4A and more; several files at once are fine).

Step 3: Press Remove. The result card shows how many gaps were cut and how much time was saved.

Settings explained
- Silence below
- Anything quieter than this counts as silence.
- Keep around speech
- Leaves a little air so cuts do not sound abrupt.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Web Audio
- Audio is processed with the browser’s built-in Web Audio engine, sample-accurate and fast.
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
What the silence remover settings do
The silence remover works on volume alone. Anything quieter than the threshold for longer than the shortest gap is cut, minus the padding left on both sides. These settings decide what it removes.
| Setting | Range (default) | Turn it up if… | Turn it down if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silence below | −60 to −20 dB (−40) | Room noise or hum is not being treated as silence | Quiet words or breaths are being cut |
| Shortest gap to cut | 0.2–3 s (0.6) | Natural pauses between sentences are lost | Long pauses remain |
| Keep around speech | 0–0.5 s (0.12) | Cuts sound abrupt or clip word endings | You want the tightest result |
Will it remove every pause?
When you remove pauses from audio here, only pauses longer than Shortest gap to cut go. At the default 0.6 s, the short breaths between words stay and the long hesitations go, which keeps speech sounding human. Lower it to 0.3 s for a fast, punchy edit; raise it to 1–2 s if you only want to remove dead air between segments. Silence at the very start and end of the file is trimmed as well.
Can it remove “um” and “uh” too?
No. Filler words are as loud as speech, so a volume-based silence remover cannot tell them apart. Auto cut uses on-device speech recognition to find and remove filler words as well as pauses, and it also works on videos.
How do I avoid clicks after removing silence?
The joins already use short crossfades, so clicks are rare. If you hear one, raise Keep around speech to 0.15–0.25 s so cuts land further from the words, or lower Silence below so quiet word endings are not treated as silence. Noisy recordings cut more cleanly after the noise reducer, because the gaps then really are quiet.
Tips & troubleshooting
Removing silence from a video? Use auto cut, which cuts the picture and sound together.
Bring the tightened recording to podcast loudness afterwards with normalize audio.
Want to cut one specific section rather than every gap? The MP3 cutter is the tool for that.
Silence Remover FAQ
How do I remove silence from audio automatically?
Drop the recording here and press Remove with the default settings. Every gap quieter than −40 dB and longer than 0.6 seconds is cut, leaving 0.12 seconds of air around the speech.
Can I remove silence from a video?
Not on this page; it saves audio only. Auto cut removes pauses from videos and keeps picture and sound in sync.
Does removing silence from an MP3 reduce quality?
Only the gaps change. MP3 and M4A files are re-encoded at a bitrate close to the original; choose WAV or FLAC under Save as for a lossless result.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. Finding and cutting the silences happens in your browser on your device. The recording is never sent to a server.
