Denoise Video – Remove Grain from Low-Light Footage
Denoise video shot at night, indoors or on an old camera: ProMedia smooths the crawling grain while keeping edges and faces sharp. It compares each frame with the ones before it, so static areas get much cleaner and moving parts stay crisp. Pick light, medium or strong. This works on the picture only, not on hiss or wind in the sound.

How to remove grain from a video
Step 1: Drop your grainy video on the box above.
Step 2: Choose Strength: start with Medium, use Light for slightly noisy clips and Strong for very dark night footage.
Step 3: Press Process and compare the result with the original on the same screen.
Good to know
Settings explained
- Strength
- Stronger settings remove more grain but also soften fine detail.
- Quality
- Only used when a stream has to be re-encoded. Compatible streams are copied with no quality loss.
- Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
- Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
- Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
- FFmpeg (when needed)
- Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.
Light, medium or strong: which strength to pick
Stronger settings remove more grain but also soften fine texture such as hair, fabric and distant leaves. Start in the middle and go up only if grain is still the first thing you notice. Noisy sound rather than a noisy picture? Use Remove background noise instead.
| Strength | Removes | Keeps | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Fine sensor noise and compression shimmer | Nearly all texture | Indoor phone clips, slightly noisy webcams |
| Medium (default) | Typical low-light grain | Faces, edges, most texture | Evening and concert footage |
| Strong | Heavy grain and colour speckles | Edges and large shapes; fine texture gets smoother | Night shots, dark rooms, old camcorder tapes |
Why is my video grainy?
Grain is sensor noise. In low light the camera boosts the signal to get a bright enough picture, and that boost amplifies the random speckle every sensor produces. Small phone sensors and night scenes show it most, and heavy compression turns it into blotchy, shimmering patches. Video noise reduction works because real detail stays put from frame to frame while noise changes every frame, so averaging over time cancels much of it.
Does denoising reduce sharpness?
A little, at higher strengths. The filter protects edges, but very fine texture looks like noise to any denoiser, so Strong can make skin and fabric look smoother. That is why Medium is the default. The video is re-encoded once as H.264 with the sound copied untouched, and the estimate under the options shows the expected file size before you start.
Fix a grainy low-light video on iPhone, Android or a computer
Phone gallery editors have a noise slider for photos but rarely for video. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, pick the clip and process it there; on a computer, long 4K clips finish faster. Brightening a dark video makes the grain more visible, so denoise first and then lift the exposure with video color correction.
Tips & troubleshooting
Clean up grainy video before compressing it: the video compressor then spends its bits on detail instead of noise.
Shaky as well as noisy? Stabilize the video after denoising.
Old, damaged files that will not play properly need Repair Video before any cleanup.
Denoise Video (Remove Grain) FAQ
Can you remove grain from a video?
You can reduce it a lot. Grain that changes from frame to frame is averaged away, while edges and details are protected. Very dark footage keeps some texture, because removing all of it would also remove real detail.
What does video denoise mean?
It means reducing the random speckles (noise) in the picture, mostly caused by low light. It is different from audio noise reduction, which removes hiss and hum from the sound; for that, use Remove background noise.
How do I reduce noise on an iPhone video?
Open this page in Safari, choose the clip from Photo Library, pick Medium and press Process. Save the result back to Photos and compare it with the original at full screen.
Is your video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your video is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
