Pitch Changer: Change the Key of a Song

This pitch changer moves any song, backing track or voice up or down by up to 12 semitones, a full octave either way, while the tempo and length stay exactly the same. Use it to put a song in your vocal range, match an instrument tuned to a different key or make a practice track easier. It works on MP3, WAV, M4A and FLAC in your browser, with no upload.

How to change the pitch of a song

  1. Step 1: Drop your song on the box above. Several files can share the same shift.

  2. Step 2: Move the Pitch slider: each step is one semitone, + is higher and − is lower.

  3. Step 3: Press Apply, listen to the result and download it. The length is unchanged.

How many semitones is one key?

Neighbouring keys are one semitone apart, so moving a song from C to D is +2 semitones and from C to A is −3. Twelve semitones make an octave: the same key, one octave higher or lower. The table shows what common shifts do to the pitch.

Semitone shifts and what they do
Pitch settingExample key changeFrequency × (440 Hz A becomes…)Typical use
+1C → C♯× 1.059 (466 Hz)Match a band tuned slightly sharp
+2C → D× 1.122 (494 Hz)Brighter key for a higher voice
+5C → F× 1.335 (587 Hz)Large shift; voices start to sound thin
−1E → E♭× 0.944 (415 Hz)Play along with a guitar tuned down a half step
−2D → C× 0.891 (392 Hz)Lower key when high notes strain
−3C → A× 0.841 (370 Hz)Comfortable range for many lower voices
±12One octave× 2 or × 0.5Sound effects, harmonies, bass lines
Each semitone multiplies the frequency by the twelfth root of 2 (about 1.0595).

How do I change the key of a song without changing the tempo?

Set the number of semitones and press Apply: tempo is kept automatically. Behind the scenes the audio is first resampled, which shifts pitch and speed together like a turntable, and then time-stretched back to its original length with SoundTouch’s WSOLA algorithm. The result is the same song in a new key, still in sync with lyrics, videos or a click track.

If you want speed and pitch to change together on purpose, that is the turntable or nightcore effect; use the audio speed changer with Keep original pitch off.

Does pitch shifting reduce quality?

Small shifts sound natural; big shifts reveal the processing. Up to about ±3 semitones most songs and voices sound like a real performance in another key. Beyond that, voices change character because their formants (the resonances that make a voice recognisable) move with the pitch: higher shifts sound thin and childlike, lower ones heavy and slow. Dense mixes can also pick up a slight phasing sound at large shifts.

A true-peak limiter keeps the result from clipping. For the cleanest file, choose WAV or FLAC under Save as so it is not re-encoded to a lossy format.

Pitch changer vs pitch shifter: is there a difference?

No, the terms are used interchangeably. Musicians often say pitch shifter for an effect pedal or plugin that works live, and key changer or transpose for moving a whole song; all of them change pitch without changing tempo, which is what this page does to files.

Transpose a song to your vocal range

  1. Sing along with the original and note whether the highest or lowest notes are the problem.
  2. If the high notes strain, try −2 or −3 semitones; if the low notes disappear, try +2 or +3.
  3. Apply, sing along again, and adjust by one semitone at a time until it feels comfortable.
  4. Want just the music without the original singer? Remove the lead vocal first with the vocal remover, then shift the instrumental.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Learning a song by ear? Combine a small pitch shift with a slower tempo in the audio speed changer.

  • For funny voices rather than musical keys, the voice changer has ready-made chipmunk, deep and alien effects.

  • Need to know the tempo too? The BPM finder reads it from the file.

  • Shifting a whole album to match a detuned instrument? Drop all the tracks at once; each gets the same number of semitones.

Pitch Changer FAQ

How do I change the key of a song without changing the tempo?

Drop the song here, move the Pitch slider by the number of semitones you need and press Apply. The tempo and length stay exactly the same; only the key moves.

How many semitones is one key?

Adjacent keys are one semitone apart; moving between keys a whole step apart, such as C to D, is two semitones. Twelve semitones is an octave, the same key higher or lower.

Does pitch shifting reduce quality?

Slightly, and mostly at large shifts. Up to about ±3 semitones it sounds natural; larger shifts make voices sound thin or heavy. Saving as WAV or FLAC avoids an extra lossy encode.

Can I change the pitch of an MP3?

Yes. MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC and OGG all work. With Save as on Same as input, an MP3 comes back as an MP3 at a bitrate close to the original.

Is my song uploaded?

No. The pitch shift runs in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
