Blur, colour or image: which new background?
Blur keeps the room but makes it unreadable, the safest choice for video calls and vlogs. Image places you in front of any photo you choose. Colour fills the background with one flat colour; the default is a chroma green, so an editor with a green-screen key can replace it later with moving footage.

Remove the background from a video without a green screen
Yes, for people. The tool uses MODNet, a 7 MB model trained to find people, and runs it on the video’s frames at 512 pixels on the short side. The mask is smoothed from one frame to the next to reduce flicker at the edges, then scaled to your video’s resolution and composited with the new background. The sound is copied untouched.
Before the long job starts it checks a few frames for a person. If there is none, it stops and says so instead of replacing the whole picture, because the model only understands people, not products or pets.
How long it takes
This is the slowest tool on ProMedia because the model runs on the frames one by one. Faster computes the mask on every second frame for videos above 20 fps; Better edges does every frame for steadier hair and hands. The progress line shows the measured time per frame on your device.

What works and what does not
- Works well: one or two people facing the camera, a webcam or phone shot, steady light, a background that differs from clothes and hair.
- Harder: fast movement, flyaway hair, people far from the camera, and hands near the edge of the frame. Edges there can flicker.
- Not supported: objects, products and animals without a person; use remove background on a still image instead.

Change a video background on iPhone, Android or a computer
The tool runs in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android, but every frame passes through the model, so a phone takes several times longer than a laptop and needs the screen on. For anything longer than a few seconds, use a computer: drag the video into Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari and leave the tab open. The result keeps the video’s resolution, MP4, WebM and MOV stay in their format, and older formats such as AVI are converted to MP4 first.
