Remove Green Screen from Video (Chroma Key)
Remove green screen from video clips and put anything behind your subject: a solid colour, a photo or another video. ProMedia detects the backdrop colour by itself, removes it on your graphics chip and cleans the green glow from hair and edges, with a live preview of the exact result. Blue screens work too, and the footage never leaves your device.

How to remove a green screen from a video
Step 1: Drop your green-screen clip on the box above. The screen colour is detected automatically, or click it in the preview to pick it yourself.
Step 2: Raise Similarity until the backdrop disappears, then add a little Edge softness and Spill removal for clean hair and outlines.
Step 3: Under New background, choose a colour, an image or a video. Images and videos fill the frame; a shorter background video loops.
Step 4: Press Process and download the composited video.

Settings explained
- Screen colour
- Left at pure green (#00FF00), the backdrop colour is detected automatically. Or pick it from the preview.
- Similarity
- Higher removes more shades of the key colour.
- Spill removal
- Removes the green tint reflected onto the subject.
- Background file
- Cover-fitted to the frame. A shorter video loops.
- Quality
- Only used when a stream has to be re-encoded. Compatible streams are copied with no quality loss.
- Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
- Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
- Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
Chroma key video settings explained
Three sliders decide how good the key looks. Start with the defaults, watch the preview and change one slider at a time.
| Setting | What it does | Turn it up when | Turn it down when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Similarity (default 40%) | How far from the key colour a shade can be and still be removed | Patches of the screen remain, for example in shadows or wrinkles | Parts of the subject turn see-through |
| Edge softness (default 10%) | How gradually the edge fades from subject to background | Edges look jagged or cut out with scissors | A faint halo or ghost of the screen remains |
| Spill removal (default 50%) | Removes the green tint the screen reflects onto skin, hair and clothes | Hair and shoulders look green | Real green objects in the shot lose colour |
What is chroma key?
Chroma key is the technique behind green and blue screens: every pixel whose colour is close to one chosen colour becomes transparent, and a new background shows through. ProMedia measures the distance in colour (hue) rather than brightness, which is why shadows on the screen can still be keyed while a person’s face stays solid.
You do need an evenly coloured backdrop for it. For footage filmed in front of a normal room, the video background remover separates the person with AI instead, no green screen required.
How to fix green spill around the edges
Green spill is light bouncing off the screen onto the subject, so hair, shoulders and glasses pick up a green fringe. Raise Spill removal until the fringe turns neutral; 50% handles most shots. If a thin green outline remains, add a few points of Edge softness. When filming, a gap of one or two metres between subject and screen and even, separate lighting on the backdrop reduce spill far more than any slider can.
Green or blue screen: which color is best for chroma key?
Green is the default because cameras capture green with the most detail and it is far from skin tones, which gives clean edges with little noise. Blue is better when the subject wears green, for plants and for scenes where green spill would be hard to hide. This green screen remover handles both: it detects the backdrop colour automatically, or you can click it in the preview.
Make a green screen video on iPhone, Android or a computer
This chroma key online tool works on phones as well as computers. Film against the screen, then open this page in Safari or Chrome and drop the clip in. The live preview runs on phones too, so you can tune the key with your finger. Exports are H.264 MP4 with the original sound copied, ready for Instagram, TikTok or YouTube. Long 4K clips are faster on a computer.
Tips & troubleshooting
Keying a still photo? Remove green screen from image does the same for pictures and can save a transparent PNG.
Grade the composite afterwards with video color correction so the subject and the new background match.
A background video shorter than your clip loops automatically; trim it first with the video trimmer if you want a specific part.
Need a transparent video file? Video with transparency is not supported here; export over a solid colour and key it again in your editor if needed.
Green Screen Video (Chroma Key) FAQ
How do I remove a green screen from a video for free?
Drop the clip here, let the backdrop colour be detected, adjust Similarity until the screen is gone and choose a new background. Press Process. It is free, adds no watermark and runs in your browser.
Do you need a green screen for chroma key?
Chroma key needs an evenly coloured backdrop, usually green or blue. Without one, use the video background remover, which uses AI to separate a person from any background.
How do I replace the green screen background with my own video?
Set New background to Video and choose a clip, then press Process. The clip is scaled to fill the frame, and if it is shorter than your green-screen footage it loops.
Can I make the background transparent?
Not as a video file: the result always has a background, a colour, an image or a video. For single frames, Remove green screen from image can save transparent PNGs.
Is your video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your video is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
