Webcam Test: Check Your Camera Online
A webcam test that shows what other people will actually see: the live picture, the real resolution your camera sends, and a frame rate measured from the frames that arrive rather than the number the driver claims. Switch cameras, mirror the view and save a full-resolution snapshot. The test runs in your browser; nothing is recorded or uploaded.

How to test your webcam
Step 1: Click Start camera test and allow camera access when the browser asks.
Step 2: Check the live preview, then read Resolution, Frame rate and Aspect ratio beside it.
Step 3: Pick another device under Camera if you have more than one; phones show front and back cameras.
Step 4: Click Take a snapshot to save a PNG at the camera’s full resolution.

What your webcam test results mean
The test asks the camera for its highest mode, up to 4K at 30 fps, and reports what it really delivers. Comparing the measured frame rate with the one the camera reports is the quickest way to spot a lighting or bandwidth problem.
| Reading | What it tells you | Typical value |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | The size of the picture the browser receives | 1280×720 or 1920×1080 for laptop cameras |
| Frame rate | Frames actually arriving each second, measured live | 30 fps in good light |
| Reported by camera | The rate the camera promised when it opened | Usually 30 fps |
| Aspect ratio | Picture shape | 16:9 widescreen; 4:3 on older webcams |
| Facing | Which camera on a phone or tablet | Front or Back |
Common webcam resolutions
Megapixels are what the snapshot reports. A camera advertised as 1080p that tests at 1280×720 is often running in a lower mode chosen by its driver or limited by a USB hub.
| Name | Pixels | Megapixels | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| VGA | 640×480 | 0.3 MP | Old or very cheap webcams |
| HD 720p | 1280×720 | 0.9 MP | Most built-in laptop cameras |
| Full HD 1080p | 1920×1080 | 2.1 MP | Newer laptops and most USB webcams |
| QHD 1440p | 2560×1440 | 3.7 MP | Higher-end webcams |
| 4K UHD | 3840×2160 | 8.3 MP | Premium webcams, phone cameras |
Why is my webcam not working?
- Access blocked: the test says so. Click the camera or lock icon in the address bar, allow the camera and reload.
- Camera busy: another app or tab (Zoom, Teams, a second browser tab) is using it. Close it and start the test again.
- Black picture: many laptops have a privacy shutter or a camera key on the keyboard. Slide it open or press the key.
- No camera found: on Windows, check Settings → Privacy & security → Camera; on a Mac, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, and allow your browser.
- Wrong camera: pick the right one under Camera; the list below ticks the one in use.
Why is my webcam blurry or dark?
Light is the biggest factor. Face a window or a lamp rather than sitting with it behind you, and the camera can use shorter exposures, which gives a sharper picture and a higher frame rate. Wipe the lens; laptop cameras collect fingerprints.
If the resolution reads 640×480 on a camera that should do more, unplug it from any hub and connect it straight to the computer, then run the test again.
Test your camera before a Zoom, Teams or Meet call
Run this test first to rule out the camera itself, then check the same device in the app. If the app reports the camera as busy, close this tab.
Zoom
Settings → Video shows a preview and the camera list. Choose the camera that looked best here.
Microsoft Teams
Settings → Devices → Camera has a preview of the selected camera.
Google Meet
Before joining, open Settings → Video to pick the camera and see a preview.
Camera test online before an exam, interview or new job
Proctored exams and video interviews check your camera in the browser, so test webcam access in the same browser you will use on the day. Sit with a light in front of you, keep your face and shoulders in the frame and make sure the measured frame rate stays near 30 fps.
If the exam site later says it cannot find a camera, the cause is usually the permission for that site, not the camera: allow it from the address bar the same way you did here.
Webcam check on Windows 11, Mac or Chromebook
Each system has an app that shows the camera too. They are handy for a second opinion, but none of them reports the measured frame rate or lists every camera the browser can use.
Windows 10 and 11
Open the Camera app. If it shows a picture but this page does not, the browser is blocked in Settings → Privacy & security → Camera.
Mac
Photo Booth or FaceTime opens the camera instantly. If they work and the browser does not, allow it under Privacy & Security → Camera.
Chromebook
The Camera app shows the built-in camera. In Chrome, the camera icon in the address bar controls this page’s access.
Is a webcam test safe?
This one is. The picture goes from the camera to your browser and stays there; nothing is streamed or recorded. A snapshot is only taken when you click the button, and it is saved to your device. Close the tab or revoke the permission in the address bar when you are done.
Tips & troubleshooting
Want to record a clip rather than just look? Use the webcam recorder with the camera that tested best.
Testing for an online exam or interview? Run the mic test in the same browser, since both need permission.
Mirror preview only flips what you see; snapshots and recordings are saved the right way round.
Need a still from a video you already have instead? Grab an exact frame with the video screenshot tool.
Webcam Test FAQ
How do I test my webcam?
Click Start camera test, allow access and look at the preview. If you see yourself, the camera works. The resolution and measured frame rate beside the picture tell you how good the image is.
How do I test my camera on a laptop?
Open this page on the laptop and start the test; the built-in camera is usually picked first. If a privacy shutter or camera key is closed, the preview stays black, so check the bezel and the function keys.
Why is the resolution lower than advertised?
The test asks for the highest mode and shows what arrives. Lower values usually come from the driver choosing a smaller mode or a USB hub limiting bandwidth. Low light lowers the frame rate, not the resolution.
Is my webcam working if its light is on but the picture is black?
Probably yes: the light means the camera is powered and in use. A black picture with the light on is usually a closed privacy shutter or a covered lens. If the test says the camera is busy instead, another app is holding it: close that app and start again.
Why is my picture mirrored?
The preview is mirrored by default because that feels natural. Switch off Mirror preview to see what others see. Snapshots are always saved unmirrored.
Does the webcam test work on phones?
Yes, in Chrome, Safari and other current browsers. The camera list shows the front and back cameras, and the Facing reading tells you which one is active.
Is anything recorded or uploaded?
No. The test only displays the live picture. A snapshot is saved to your device when you ask for one, and nothing ever goes to a server.
