WebM to GIF Converter

Convert WebM to GIF in your browser: clips saved by screen recorders, browser extensions and web apps become GIFs that play in any chat, email or document. Trim the part you need, pick the frame rate and width, and check the estimated size before exporting. The VP8 or VP9 video is decoded on your own device, so nothing is uploaded.

Settings explained

Frame rate
Frames per second. 10–15 fps keeps GIFs small and still smooth.
Quality
Best quality gives every frame its own palette and keeps finer motion detail, which makes larger files.
  • Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
  • Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
  • Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
Colours
Fewer colours, smaller file.
Dithering
Smooths gradients at the cost of a slightly larger file.

How it runs

GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.

WebM vs GIF: what changes when you convert

WebM is a modern video format and GIF is an old image format, so the GIF trades file size and colour for compatibility. It plays in places a WebM never will: email newsletters, many forums, documents and image-only upload fields.

What is a WebM file?

A WebM file is an open video format Google introduced in 2010. It is based on the Matroska container and carries VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio, all royalty-free. Browsers can record WebM natively, which is why browser screen recorders, extensions and web apps so often save it.

The catch is everywhere outside the browser: many email clients, forums and older apps refuse WebM, and a GIF is the simplest format they will all display.

Can a GIF be transparent? What happens to WebM transparency

A GIF can be transparent, but only fully on or fully off per pixel, with no soft edges. This converter always writes GIFs from video as opaque pictures, so if your WebM has a transparent background, such as a sticker or a green-screen export with alpha, those areas come out as a solid colour.

If you need a see-through result, keep the WebM where it is supported, or export the frames as transparent PNGs from your editor and build the animation with the GIF maker.

Best WebM to GIF settings for screen recordings, games and clips

Different footage needs different settings. As a reference, a 5-second 16:9 clip with average motion is about 2.6 MB at 640 px and 10 fps, and about 2.9 MB at 480 px and 20 fps.

Suggested settings by type of WebM clip
ClipFrame rateWidthAdvanced

The live estimate under the options measures your own clip’s motion, so trust it over these examples.

Convert WebM to GIF on any computer or phone

The converter works the same in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone. If your browser cannot decode a particular WebM, ProMedia tries again with its built-in FFmpeg engine, which is slower but reads far more codecs. Nothing installs, and nothing leaves the device.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • GIF over a chat limit? The GIF compressor hits an exact size by trimming colours and frames before shrinking the picture.

  • Need the clip as a normal video for phones and editors instead? Use WebM to MP4, which keeps the sound.

  • For a smaller animation that keeps full colour on a website, try the animated WebP maker.

  • Recording your screen anyway? Screen to GIF records straight to a GIF in the browser.

WebM to GIF Converter FAQ

How do I make a GIF from a WebM?

Drop the WebM onto the converter at the top of this page, select the seconds you want with the timeline handles, choose a frame rate and width, and press Create GIF. The GIF is made in your browser and downloads immediately.

Can a GIF be transparent?

Yes, but only with hard edges: each GIF pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. GIFs made from video on this page are always opaque, so transparent areas of a WebM become a solid colour.

How do I keep a GIF from a WebM recording small?

Select fewer seconds, lower the width and use 10 fps for screen recordings. For an exact limit such as 256 KB, finish with the GIF compressor, which keeps the length and timing intact.

Does the GIF keep the WebM’s audio?

No. GIF has no audio track, so the Opus or Vorbis sound in the WebM is dropped. Convert to MP4 instead if you need the sound.

Can I convert a Telegram video sticker to GIF?

Telegram’s video stickers are WebM files with a transparent background. They convert, but the transparent area turns into a solid colour because GIFs made from video here are opaque.
