Discord GIF size limits at a glance
Discord has three different limits for GIFs. Emoji must stay under 256 KB, stickers under 512 KB at exactly 320×320 px, and a GIF posted in a message can be up to 20 MB on a free account.

Is the Discord file limit still 10 MB?
No. Free accounts were raised from 10 MB to 20 MB per file on 14 Aug 2026, so advice to “compress your GIF to 10 MB” is out of date. Most GIFs posted in a chat already fit; choose Free upload only when yours does not.
Emoji and sticker limits did not change, and they are where most GIFs get rejected.
Make a Discord sticker from a GIF
The Discord sticker size is exactly 320×320 px, and the compressor may scale a GIF down if colours and frame skipping are not enough. Size it first, then compress:
- Cut the GIF to a square with crop GIF and the 1:1 ratio.
- Set it to 320×320 px with the GIF resizer in Pixels mode.
- Compress it here with the Sticker · 512 KB target.
- If the result card shows a size below 320×320, switch to Manual, keep Scale at 100% and lower Colours or skip frames instead.
Why resize an emoji GIF before compressing
An emoji is shown small, and Discord recommends 128×128 px. A 128 px frame has about 7% of the pixels of a 480 px square frame, so the same 256 KB can hold full colour and every frame. If you compress a GIF to 256 KB straight from 480 px, it usually loses colours and smoothness first and ends up scaled down anyway.
Tips & troubleshooting
Animated emoji look choppy after compressing? Resize to 128 px with the GIF resizer first and compress again from the original.
Sharing a long clip rather than a GIF? A video is far smaller: compress video for Discord fits it to the upload limit.
