Crop GIF

Crop GIF animations in your browser: drag a box over the part you want to keep, or pick a ratio such as square or 9:16, and every frame is cut to the same area. The timing, the loop and the colours stay as they were, and animated WebP files work the same way. Nothing is uploaded and there is no watermark.

Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.

How it runs

GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
WebAssembly codecs
Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.

Crop vs resize vs compress: which one do you need?

Cropping cuts away the edges and keeps the rest at full sharpness; resizing shrinks or enlarges the whole picture; compressing lowers the file size. They are often used together, in that order.

Crop a GIF without losing the animation

To crop an animated GIF, ProMedia decodes every frame to a complete picture, cuts the same rectangle out of each one and encodes the result again with each frame’s original delay and the original loop setting. Nothing is resampled, so the cropped area keeps every pixel.

When the frames together use no more than 255 colours, which is common for stickers, graphics and screen recordings, they are re-encoded with that exact palette and the result card says Lossless colours. Only GIFs that used different palettes per frame may need a shared palette, which can shift a few shades.

Crop a GIF to a square, 9:16 or another ratio

Pick a ratio in the GIF cropper and the crop box keeps that shape while you move and resize it. If you press Crop without drawing a box, the largest centred area with that ratio is used, which is the quickest way to crop a GIF to a square.

Aspect ratios in the GIF cropper
RatioGood for
1:1Avatars, emoji, stickers, square posts
9:16Stories and vertical video frames (1080×1920 px is the usual full size)
16:9Slides, YouTube-style frames, wide banners
4:5Portrait feed posts (1080×1350 px on Instagram)
4:3Classic screen and camera framing
FreeAny shape you draw

Can I shorten a GIF’s length?

Not with cropping, which only cuts the picture, not time. ProMedia has no direct GIF trimmer yet, but there are two reliable ways round it:

  • Via video: convert with GIF to MP4, cut the seconds you want with trim video, then turn the clip back into a GIF with video to GIF. Quick, but the GIF is rebuilt from scratch.
  • Frame by frame: split the GIF with the GIF to PNG frame splitter, delete the frames you do not want and rebuild the rest with the GIF maker. Best for short GIFs with an even frame rate.

Why can’t I crop a GIF on my iPhone?

The crop tool in the Photos app is built for photos and videos, and editing a GIF there can save a still picture instead of the animation. Cropping here keeps every frame: open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone, pick the GIF from Photos or Files, crop it and save the result with Share → Save Image so it still plays in the Animated album.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Cropping for a Discord sticker? Crop to 1:1, then set the exact size with the GIF resizer.

  • Want a caption in the space you freed up? Add one with add text to GIF.

  • Need to crop a video before it becomes a GIF? Crop video does it on the source clip, which keeps more quality.

  • Cropping also makes the file smaller: a crop to half the width and height leaves about a quarter of the pixels.

Crop GIF FAQ

How do I crop a GIF without losing the animation?

Drop the GIF on this page, drag the crop box over the area you want and press Crop. Every frame is cut to the same rectangle and keeps its delay and the loop setting, so it animates exactly as before.

Why can’t I crop a GIF on my iPhone?

The Photos editor is designed for photos and videos, and editing an animated GIF there can leave you with a still image. Open this page in Safari instead, crop the GIF and save it back to Photos with Share → Save Image.

How do I crop a GIF to a square?

Choose 1:1 under Aspect ratio. Drag the square over the part you want, or press Crop straight away to use the largest square in the centre of the GIF.

Can I shorten a GIF’s length?

Cropping only cuts the picture, not time. To shorten a GIF, convert it to MP4, trim the video and convert it back, or split it into frames, delete the ones you do not need and rebuild it with the GIF maker.

Does cropping reduce GIF quality?

No. The kept area is not resampled, and a GIF that uses 255 colours or fewer in total is re-encoded with its exact original colours, which the result card confirms as “Lossless colours”.
