Compress Video for Discord – Fit the 20 MB, 50 MB or 500 MB Limit

Compress video for Discord in your browser: pick your plan and ProMedia fits the clip just under the upload limit, 20 MB on a free account, 50 MB with Nitro Basic or 500 MB with Nitro. It plans the bitrate from the clip’s length, keeps the sharpest resolution that size allows and outputs an MP4 that plays inline in chat. Nothing is uploaded except to Discord itself.

Settings explained

Your Discord plan
Discord raised the free upload limit from 10 MB to 20 MB on 14 Aug 2026.
Reduce size by
50% turns a 100 MB video into about 50 MB.
Quality
  • Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
  • Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
  • Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
Max resolution
Automatic steps the resolution down only when the bitrate would get too low — a smaller sharp picture beats a big blocky one.
Video codec
H.264 plays everywhere. HEVC and AV1 give smaller files at the same quality but need newer devices.
  • H.264 (AVC): Plays everywhere
  • H.265 (HEVC): About 35% smaller, newer devices
  • VP9: Web / WebM
  • AV1: Smallest files, slowest to encode

Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.

How it runs

Hardware video engine
Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
FFmpeg (when needed)
Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.

How long a clip fits in Discord’s 20, 50 or 500 MB

Discord limits the file, not the length, so the longest clip that still looks sharp depends on your plan and on the frame rate. Game recordings at 60 fps need about half again as many bits as 30 fps footage for the same sharpness, which shortens every figure in the table.

What is the Discord file size limit?

Discord lets free accounts upload files up to 20 MB. Nitro Basic raises that to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB. The free limit went up from 10 MB to 20 MB on 14 Aug 2026, so guides that tell you to aim for 8 or 10 MB are out of date.

Your own plan sets the limit for what you upload; the plan of the person watching does not matter. ProMedia counts a megabyte as 1,000,000 bytes, the stricter reading, so a file it makes for 20 MB never bounces.

How to send large videos on Discord without Nitro

There is no way around the limit itself, but there are four honest ways to reduce video size for Discord or get a long video into a chat anyway:

  • Compress it below 20 MB here. Short clips stay at 1080p; long ones drop to 720p or 480p automatically.
  • Cut it to the moment with the video trimmer. A 20-second highlight looks far better than a squeezed 3-minute recording.
  • Split it into parts under 20 MB each with split video, then compress each part.
  • Share a link from cloud storage for the full-length original when quality matters more than inline playback.

Game clips: should you keep 60 fps?

Only for short clips. At 60 fps the compressor needs about 1.5 times the bitrate to keep the same resolution, so a free-plan clip drops below 1080p sooner. Setting Frame rate to 30 under Advanced settings buys the extra length shown in the table, and on a phone screen in a chat most viewers will not notice the difference.

Compress a video for Discord on iPhone, Android or PC

iPhone

Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone and choose Photo Library. Save the result to Files, then attach it in the Discord app with the plus button.

Android

In Chrome, tap the drop zone and pick the clip from your gallery. The MP4 is saved to Downloads, where the Discord app’s file picker finds it.

Windows and Mac

Drag the recording from your capture folder (OBS, ShadowPlay, Xbox Game Bar) onto this Discord video compressor. When it is done, drag the MP4 straight into the Discord window.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Keep the default H.264 codec. HEVC or AV1 fit longer clips, but they may not preview inline in every Discord client.

  • Silent clip or meme? Choose Remove audio under Advanced settings and the picture gets those bits.

  • Need a looping reaction instead of a video? Video to GIF makes one, and the GIF compressor shrinks it.

  • Another site asking for 10 MB? Use compress video to 10MB instead of the Discord presets.

Compress Video for Discord FAQ

What is the Discord file size limit?

Free accounts can upload 20 MB per file, up from 10 MB since 14 Aug 2026. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB. Pick your plan above and the clip is compressed just under that number.

Do I still need to compress videos to 10 MB or 8 MB for Discord?

No. Those figures are from before 14 Aug 2026, when the free limit was lower. Today 20 MB is the free ceiling, which gives a clip about twice the quality budget of the old 10 MB target.

How do I compress a video for Discord on iPhone?

Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone, choose Photo Library and pick the clip. Leave the plan on Free unless you have Nitro, press Compress, then save the MP4 to Files and attach it in Discord.

How do I compress a video on Android for Discord?

Open the page in Chrome, tap the drop zone and choose the video from your gallery. Press Compress; the MP4 is saved to Downloads, and the Discord app can attach it from there. Nothing is uploaded on the way.

Will it play inline in Discord?

Yes. The default output is H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4, which Discord previews and plays directly in the chat on desktop and mobile.

My clip is long. Will it still look good?

It depends on the length. Under 20 MB a clip of about a minute stays sharp at 1080p, and a few minutes still look clean at 720p or 480p. Beyond that, trim to the best part or split the video for the sharpest result.

Is your clip uploaded anywhere?

No. Your clip is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
