Compress Video to 10MB
Compress video to 10MB, or just under, for job and college portals, online forms and chat apps that cap uploads at 10 MB. ProMedia plans the bitrate from your clip’s length, lowers the resolution only if the size demands it and checks the finished file, so it lands below the limit every time. You see the estimate first, and the video never leaves your device.

How to compress a video to 10MB
Step 1: Drop your video on the box above. MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and most other formats work.
Step 2: Keep Target size at 10 MB, or lower it if your form asks for less.
Step 3: Check the estimated size and resolution under the options, then press Compress.
Step 4: Download the MP4. The result card shows the final size and how much was saved.

Settings explained
- Target size
- The file lands about 4% under this number (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). Lower it if your form says “less than 10 MB” and counts in MiB.
- Reduce size by
- 50% turns a 100 MB video into about 50 MB.
- Quality
- Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
- Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
- Best quality: Largest file, slowest export
- Max resolution
- Automatic steps the resolution down only when the bitrate would get too low — a smaller sharp picture beats a big blocky one.
- Video codec
- H.264 plays everywhere. HEVC and AV1 give smaller files at the same quality but need newer devices.
- H.264 (AVC): Plays everywhere
- H.265 (HEVC): About 35% smaller, newer devices
- VP9: Web / WebM
- AV1: Smallest files, slowest to encode
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
- FFmpeg (when needed)
- Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.
How long a video fits in 10 MB
At 10 MB, length decides everything: the same 10,000,000 bytes are spread across every second of the clip. A short clip stays sharp at 1080p, a few minutes only look clean at 480p or below. The table shows the longest clip that keeps each resolution at its clean minimum bitrate.
| Resolution | H.264 with audio | H.264, audio removed | HEVC with audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 33 s | 35 s | 50 s |
| 720p | 1 min 17 s | 1 min 25 s | 1 min 53 s |
| 540p | 1 min 59 s | 2 min 20 s | 2 min 49 s |
| 480p | 2 min 35 s | 3 min 12 s | 3 min 36 s |
| 360p | 4 min 03 s | 5 min 49 s | 5 min 21 s |
| 240p | 6 min 32 s | 12 min 48 s | 7 min 57 s |
Why is my 10 MB video blurry?
Because 10 MB is a small budget for a long clip. File size is bitrate × duration, so a 3-minute video at 10 MB gets roughly a sixth of the bits per second that a 30-second one does. Squeezed further, any encoder starts smearing detail and showing blocks.
ProMedia steps the resolution down before that happens, because a clean 480p picture looks better on a phone than a blocky 1080p one. If the result is still too soft, cut the clip, drop the audio or switch to HEVC.
- Trim to the part the form needs with the video trimmer. Halving the length doubles the quality budget.
- Remove audio under Advanced settings when sound is not required. That frees 96 kbps for the picture.
- Pick HEVC under Advanced settings when the portal accepts it; it needs about 35% fewer bits for the same picture.
- Lower the frame rate from 60 to 30 fps under Advanced settings for screen or game recordings.
How the 10 MB target works
The method is the same when you compress an MP4 to 10MB or a long MOV from a phone. The compressor divides 10 MB, minus a 4% safety margin and a little container overhead, by your clip’s length to get a bitrate budget.
It reserves part of that budget for audio, encodes, then measures the real file. If it is over, a corrective pass lowers the bitrate; if it is far under, a pass spends the spare room on quality. Up to four passes run, and the largest result under the limit is kept.
Two safeguards keep you from losing quality for nothing. An MP4 that already has H.264 video and AAC audio and fits under the target is handed back untouched, and no video is ever made larger than the original.
10 MB vs 10 MiB: which one does your form mean?
ProMedia counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, so the target is 10,000,000 bytes. Some systems mean 10 MiB (10,485,760 bytes), and Windows File Explorer shows sizes in those binary units while labelling them MB. A file that fits ProMedia’s 10 MB fits both readings, and Windows will display it as a little over 9 MB.
Convert video below 10 MB on a phone or computer
The page runs in any recent browser, so you can reduce video size to 10MB for a college or job portal on the same device you recorded on.
Android
Open the page in Chrome, tap the drop zone and pick the video from your gallery. The compressed MP4 lands in Downloads, ready to attach to the form.
iPhone
In Safari, tap the drop zone and choose Photo Library. Save the result to Files so the portal’s upload button can find it.
Windows and Mac
Drag the file into Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. Encoding uses the graphics chip where the browser allows it, which is usually quicker than on a phone.
Tips & troubleshooting
Sending to Discord? Free accounts now allow 20 MB, so compress video for Discord can spend twice the bits on the same clip.
Need a different number, such as 5 MB or 25 MB? Change Target size, or use the video compressor for percentage and quality modes.
Planning a recording for a 10 MB limit? The video bitrate calculator tells you how long you can record at a given quality.
Always compress from the original. Compressing an already compressed copy stacks new artefacts on the old ones.
Compress Video to 10MB FAQ
How do I compress a video to 10MB?
Drop the video on this page, keep the 10 MB target and press Compress. ProMedia works out the bitrate from the clip’s length, encodes it and checks the result, running another pass if needed, so the MP4 always comes out just under 10 MB.
How long a video fits in 10MB?
About half a minute keeps a clean 1080p picture, a little over a minute stays at 720p and around two and a half minutes at 480p, with audio. Removing the audio or choosing HEVC stretches each figure; the table above has the exact numbers.
How do I compress a video to 10MB without losing quality?
Some detail is always lost when a big file becomes small, so the aim is to lose what you will not notice. Trim the clip to the part you need, remove the audio if sound is not required and keep 30 fps. Each step leaves more of the 10 MB for the picture.
Why is the result 9.6 MB and not exactly 10 MB?
The compressor aims about 4% under the limit so the file is never rejected for being a few bytes over. Uploads count size differently, and a margin is cheaper than a failed submission.
Can I compress a 5-minute video to 10MB?
Yes, though it will be small: five minutes at 10 MB leaves roughly 251 kbps in total, so the compressor drops to about 240p and trims the audio bitrate. For a sharper result, cut the clip or split it into parts with split video.
Is your video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your video is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
