GIF to PNG: Split a GIF Into Frames

Convert GIF to PNG frame by frame: this splitter saves every frame of an animated GIF as its own PNG, JPG or WebP image and packs them into one ZIP, with a contact sheet to preview them all. Transparency is kept in PNG, and animated WebP and APNG files split the same way. Everything happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to split a GIF into frames

  1. Step 1: Drop your GIF on the box above.

  2. Step 2: Choose the Frame format: PNG keeps every pixel and transparency, JPG and WebP are smaller.

  3. Step 3: Leave Full frames on unless you need only the changed areas.

  4. Step 4: Press Extract and download the ZIP and the contact sheet.

On: each image is the complete picture. Off: only the changed area, as stored in the GIF.

Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.

How it runs

GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
WebAssembly codecs
Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.

PNG, JPG or WebP frames: which format to pick

Pick PNG when you will edit the frames or need transparency; it is lossless, so every frame matches the GIF exactly. JPG and WebP make smaller files for previews and sharing, at a small loss in sharpness.

What is in the ZIP?

This GIF frame extractor saves one image per frame, named in order: frame-001.png, frame-002.png and so on, with enough digits that they sort correctly in any file manager. Alongside the ZIP you get a contact sheet, one PNG that shows up to the first 100 frames as numbered thumbnails, so you can find the frame you want without opening each file. The result card lists the frame count, the size and the total length of the animation.

Full frames vs changed area only

Most GIFs are optimised: after the first frame they store only the rectangle that changed, and leave the rest to show through from the previous frame. With Full frames on, ProMedia rebuilds the complete picture for every frame, which is what you want almost always.

Turn it off to see the GIF the way it is stored: each frame is cut to its stored rectangle and pixels that did not change are transparent. That is useful for animators checking how a GIF was optimised.

How do I get the first frame of a GIF?

Split the GIF and take frame-001 from the ZIP; with PNG selected it is an exact still of the opening frame. To find a different frame, check its number on the contact sheet. If you want a single frame from a video instead, use video screenshot, which grabs one exact moment as an image.

GIF to JPG: saving frames as photos

Choose JPG when the frames are going somewhere that only takes photos, such as a document, a slide, a form or a print shop. Each frame becomes a standard JPEG at 92% quality, which stays sharp and is usually smaller than PNG for photo-like GIFs. When you extract frames from a GIF for a sprite sheet, a game or further editing, stay with PNG: it keeps every pixel and the transparency.

Convert a GIF to PNG with transparency

GIF transparency is all or nothing: a pixel is either fully transparent or fully visible. PNG keeps that exactly, so transparent areas stay transparent in every extracted frame and nothing is filled in. WebP frames keep it too. Only JPG cannot, so its transparent areas are filled with white instead of black, which keeps light backgrounds looking right.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Edited some frames and want an animation again? Put them back together with the GIF maker and set the time per frame to match the original.

  • Need frames from a video rather than a GIF? Video to JPG exports frames at a rate you choose.

  • Want the GIF smaller rather than split? The GIF compressor removes colours and frames in place.

  • Windows: right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All. Mac and iPhone: tap or double-click it to unzip.

GIF Splitter (GIF to PNG Frames) FAQ

How do I split a GIF into frames?

Drop the GIF on this page, choose PNG, JPG or WebP and press Extract. Every frame is saved as a separate image, numbered in order, and you download them together as one ZIP.

How do I extract all frames from a GIF?

Keep Full frames on and press Extract. You get every frame as a complete picture, even from optimised GIFs that store only the parts that change, so each image looks right on its own.

How do I convert a GIF to PNG with transparency?

Choose PNG as the frame format. GIF transparency is copied exactly into each PNG, so see-through areas stay see-through. JPG is the only option that fills them, with white.

How do I get the first frame of a GIF?

Split the GIF with PNG selected and open frame-001 from the ZIP. It is an exact copy of the opening frame. The contact sheet shows the numbers of the other frames if you need a different one.

Can I split an animated WebP or APNG?

Yes. Animated WebP and APNG files are decoded the same way as GIFs, and every frame is saved in the format you choose.
