Stabilize Video – Fix Shaky Footage After Recording

Beta

Stabilize video clips after recording: ProMedia measures how the camera shook from frame to frame, works out a smooth path and shifts each frame back onto it. Walks, bike rides and handheld zooms look calmer, and the edges are cropped slightly so the moving borders stay out of view. It runs in your browser with no upload. The tool is in Beta: it handles normal handheld shake well, not every kind of wobble.

Updated

This tool is in beta: it works, but it is heavy for some devices and results may need a second look.

How to stabilize a shaky video

  1. Step 1: Drop your shaky clip on the box above.

  2. Step 2: Choose Strength: Gentle for light jitter, Medium for a walk, Strong for running or a bumpy ride.

  3. Step 3: Keep Crop edges to hide borders on, unless you prefer the full frame with moving black edges.

  4. Step 4: Press Process and download the steadier video. The result card shows how much shake was removed and how much was cropped.

Good to know

Settings explained

Crop edges to hide borders
Zooms in slightly so the moving edges are not visible.
Quality
Only used when a stream has to be re-encoded. Compatible streams are copied with no quality loss.
  • Faster: Smaller file, quickest export
  • Balanced: Good quality at a sensible size
  • Best quality: Largest file, slowest export

Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.

How it runs

Hardware video engine
Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
FFmpeg (when needed)
Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.

Gentle, medium or strong: smoothing vs cropping

Stronger smoothing follows a calmer camera path, which needs bigger corrections and therefore a bigger crop. The crop is fixed for the whole clip and only as large as the corrections require, up to the limits below.

Video stabilizer strengths
StrengthSmooths movement over aboutMaximum cropGood for
Gentle0.5 sAbout 7%Tripod bumps, slight hand tremor, talking heads
Medium (default)1 sAbout 13%Walking shots, handheld pans
Strong2 s20%Running, cycling, car and boat footage
The crop is the share of the width and of the height removed in total, split between opposite edges; the picture is then scaled back to the original frame size.

Can you stabilize a video after recording?

Yes, within limits. In a first pass the stabilizer tracks a grid of small patches between every pair of frames on a reduced copy of the clip, ignoring patches that move on their own, such as people walking past, and estimates the camera’s shift and rotation. In a second pass it smooths that camera path and moves every frame to follow the smooth version instead. The result is re-encoded once as H.264 with the original sound copied.

What it cannot fix: motion blur already baked into frames, the jelly-like wobble of rolling shutter, and very fast jolts. Scenes with little detail (fog, sky, darkness) are hard to track, so corrections there are deliberately cautious.

Why does stabilizing crop my video?

To cancel a shake, each frame is shifted the opposite way, which leaves a strip of empty space along the edge it moved away from. Zooming in a little hides those strips for the whole clip. Turn Crop edges to hide borders off to keep the full frame instead; the edges then show black bands that move with the corrections.

Stabilize a shaky video on iPhone or Android

Google Photos on Android has its own stabilize button; the iPhone Photos app has none for existing clips. On either phone, open this page in Safari or Chrome to stabilize video online with three strengths and see the measured shake reduction. Long 4K clips analyse faster on a computer.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Steadier recordings start with technique: hold the phone with both hands close to your body, walk with bent knees and turn on the camera’s own stabilization.

  • Making a hyperlapse? Stabilize first, then speed it up with the timelapse video maker.

  • If a clip is choppy rather than shaky (stuttering playback, dropped frames), try Repair Video or change the frame rate with the video encoder.

Stabilize Video FAQ

How do I stabilize a shaky video for free?

Drop the clip here, pick Medium and press Process. There is no charge, no watermark and no upload, and you can try all three strengths on the same clip.

How do I stabilize video without a gimbal?

Turn on your camera’s built-in stabilization while filming, keep the phone close to your body, and fix the rest afterwards here. A gentle crop removes most handheld shake without a gimbal.

What does it mean to stabilize a video?

It means removing unwanted camera movement, such as hand tremor or footsteps, while keeping intended moves like a slow pan. The software follows a smoothed version of the camera path instead of the shaky one.

Is your video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your video is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
