How it runs

WebAssembly codecs
Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.
GPU canvas
Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.

Is WebP smaller than PNG?

Yes, for nearly every PNG. Lossless WebP stores the identical pixels in less space, and lossy WebP shrinks photo-like PNGs enormously. The table shows three very different PNGs converted with this page: a transparent logo, a text screenshot and a photo that had been saved as PNG.

Measured 14 October 2026 in Chrome with this converter. Flat graphics can come out smaller as lossless than as lossy, as the logo shows.

Does WebP support transparency?

Fully. WebP has an 8-bit alpha channel in both lossless and lossy mode, the same smooth transparency PNG offers, so drop shadows and anti-aliased edges survive the conversion.

In short, you do not have to choose between small files and transparency, which is the classic reason sites kept heavy PNGs instead of JPGs.

Lossless or lossy WebP for graphics?

Start with lossless for anything drawn rather than photographed: logos, icons, UI elements, diagrams, pixel art and screenshots. These images have large flat areas that lossless compression handles extremely well, and lossy compression would add faint blotches around sharp edges. Switch to lossy when the PNG is really a photo, or a graphic with photographic texture; then 75–85% quality looks the same and the file is a fraction of the size.

What is a PNG file?

A PNG file is a lossless image with optional transparency, the default format for screenshots, exported graphics and anything with a see-through background. It never degrades when saved, but its compression dates from 1996 and is not especially efficient. WebP’s lossless mode was designed as a direct replacement for that job, which is why converting PNG to WebP so reliably saves space.

How to convert PNG to WebP for WordPress

WordPress accepts WebP uploads (since version 5.8). Convert your PNG logos, banners and screenshots here, then upload the .webp files to the Media Library and insert them like any image. Keep the original PNGs in your project folder in case you need to edit them. If a theme or plugin still requires PNG for a particular slot, such as some site-logo or favicon fields, use the PNG there and WebP everywhere else.

Why use this PNG to WebP converter

  • Lossless by default, so graphics are converted without a single changed pixel.
  • PNG to WebP in bulk. Convert a whole set of assets in one run; a broken file does not stop the rest.
  • Private. Design assets and screenshots never leave your device.
  • No account, no watermark. After your first conversion the WebP encoder is cached and the page also works offline.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Need to stay with PNG because a platform rejects WebP? Shrink it with Compress PNG instead.

  • Converting JPG photos too? The JPG to WebP converter starts at 80% quality, which suits photos better.

  • Animated PNGs are saved as a still WebP of the first frame; for animations, start from a GIF and use the WebP converter, which keeps GIF animation.

  • Converting back later? WebP to PNG restores a PNG with the same transparency.

PNG to WebP Converter FAQ

Is WebP smaller than PNG?

Almost always. In our tests lossless WebP was 28–58% smaller than the original PNGs with identical pixels, and lossy WebP shrank a photo saved as PNG by 94%.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes, in lossless and lossy mode alike. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels from the PNG are kept, so logos and cut-outs look the same.

Lossless or lossy WebP for graphics?

Lossless for logos, icons, diagrams and screenshots: edges stay sharp and the file is often smaller anyway. Lossy at 75–85% for photos and textured artwork.

How do I convert PNG to WebP for WordPress?

Convert the PNGs here, upload the .webp files to the Media Library (WordPress supports WebP since 5.8) and insert them as usual. Keep the PNG originals for editing.

Can I convert PNG to WebP in bulk?

Yes. Select all the PNG files at once, press Convert once and download every WebP in a single ZIP. There is no limit on the number of files, because nothing is uploaded.

Is PNG to WebP lossless?

With Lossless switched on, which is the default here, yes: the WebP holds the same pixels as the PNG and no compression artefacts are added. With it off, the conversion is lossy at the quality you choose.
