Remove Green Screen From Image
Remove green screen from image files with a precise chroma key: the backdrop turns transparent, or is replaced with a colour or another photo. Three sliders tune how much green is removed, how soft the edges are and how much green reflection is cleaned off hair and shoulders. Blue screens work too. Everything runs in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

The chroma key settings explained
A chroma key removes every pixel whose colour is close to the key colour. Similarity sets how close counts, Edge softness turns the hard cut into a gradual one, and Spill removal takes the green tint out of pixels that are kept. Start with the defaults and change one slider at a time.
| Setting | Default | Raise it when | Lower it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Background colour to remove | Pure green (#00ff00) | — | Set it to your actual backdrop colour for the cleanest key |
| Similarity | 40% | Patches of backdrop stay visible, for example in shadows or creases | Parts of the subject turn transparent, such as green clothing or eyes |
| Edge softness | 10% | Edges look cut out with scissors, hair looks blocky | Edges look see-through or ghostly |
| Spill removal | 50% | A green fringe or glow stays around the subject | Greenish colours in the subject turn grey |
Match the key colour to your green screen
Real green screens are rarely the pure green of the default key, so the first job is to tell the keyer which green you used: click the Background colour to remove swatch and pick a shade that matches the backdrop. Many desktop browsers’ colour pickers include an eyedropper for this. Then raise Similarity in small steps until the backdrop is gone everywhere, including the darker folds and shadows.
Even lighting does more than any slider. A backdrop lit evenly, with the subject a step or two in front of it, keys in one pass; a wrinkled, unevenly lit screen needs a higher similarity, which starts to eat into the subject.
Replace a green screen with another image
Under New background, choose Image and pick the photo to put behind your subject. It is scaled to cover the whole frame and centred, so pick a background with roughly the same shape as the green-screen shot. Colour places the subject on a solid colour instead, which is handy for product photos on white or a brand colour.
Composited results are saved as JPG for photos, or in the original format for PNG, WebP and GIF files. A transparent result is saved as PNG (WebP and GIF inputs keep their format), ready to layer in any editor or in combine images.
How to get rid of green edges (spill)
Spill is green light that bounces off the screen onto hair, skin and the edges of clothing. Those pixels are not close enough to the key to be removed, but they look green on the new background. Spill removal desaturates pixels that are near the key colour, which turns the green cast into a neutral tone.
Raise it until the fringe is gone; if green parts of the subject start to look grey, back it off a little. A touch of Edge softness then blends the edge into the new background.
Can you remove a blue screen, or other colours?
Yes. Set the key colour to your blue and the same three sliders apply; blue screens are the usual choice when the subject wears green. Any strongly coloured backdrop can be keyed, such as a red or yellow wall. What a chroma key cannot do is remove white, grey or black backgrounds cleanly: it compares colour, and neutral tones are close to every other neutral in the picture, so shirts, shadows and highlights would vanish too.
For a white wall, a busy room or no backdrop at all, use the AI background remover, which recognises the subject instead of a colour.
Do you need Photoshop to remove a green screen?
No. A chroma key is a well-defined job, and this green screen remover does it in the browser with the controls that matter:
- No install, no account. Open the page, drop the photo, download the result.
- A whole shoot at once. Every photo in the batch gets the same key settings, so a series shot against one backdrop matches.
- Private by design. Studio and product shots are processed on your device and never uploaded.
- Video too. For clips, green screen video keys every frame with a live preview.
Tips & troubleshooting
Shoot with the subject a metre or more from the screen: less green light reaches their back and edges, so there is less spill to remove.
Avoid green clothing, jewellery that reflects the screen and green-tinted glasses in front of a green backdrop.
If a few backdrop pixels survive near the frame edges, crop them off afterwards with the image cropper.
Keep the transparent PNG as a master; you can drop it onto new backgrounds later without keying again.
Remove Green Background FAQ
How do I remove a green screen from a photo?
Drop the photo here, set the key colour to your backdrop’s green, raise Similarity until the green disappears, then pick Transparent, a colour or an image as the new background and press Apply.
How do I replace a green screen with another image?
Choose Image under New background and pick the replacement photo. It is scaled to fill the frame and centred behind your subject, and the result is saved as JPG for photos.
How do I get rid of green edges?
Raise Spill removal, which neutralises green reflections on hair and skin, and add a little Edge softness so the outline blends into the new background.
Can I remove a blue screen too?
Yes. Set the background colour to your blue and adjust the same sliders. White, grey or black backgrounds are better handled by the AI background remover.
Do I need Photoshop to remove a green screen?
No. This chroma key runs in your browser, handles batches and exports transparent PNGs or composited JPGs without any software to install.
Is your photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
