What size should a collage be?

Pick the shape of the place it will be shown, then the size. The default 2048 px is sharp on any screen; 1080 px matches what social apps display, and 4096 px is for printing. At 1080 px, the 4:5 shape is exactly the Instagram portrait post size (1080×1350) and 9:16 is exactly a story (1080×1920).

Collage output size by shape and Size setting
ShapeGood for1080 px2048 px (default)4096 px

4:5Instagram portrait posts, the tallest shape in the feed1080×13502048×25604096×5120

16:9YouTube thumbnails, slides, desktop wallpapers, TV screens1920×10803641×20487282×4096
The Size setting is the short side. Phones allow smaller images than computers, so a 4096 px collage may be reduced on an iPhone; the result tells you when that happens.

Framing each photo, borders and rounded corners

Add the photos first; the layouts on offer change with the number of pictures. The preview is drawn by the same code that saves the file, so what you see is what you get. Every cell is filled edge to edge, and you decide which part of each photo shows: drag inside a cell to slide the picture, use the zoom slider (up to 4×) to crop in tighter, and drag a photo onto another cell to swap the two.

Border sets the gap between and around the photos, Corner radius rounds every cell, and Border colour fills the gaps. White and black are classic; a colour from the photos ties the collage together. Both sliders are measured at a 1080 px collage and scale up with the size, so a 4096 px export looks the same as the preview.

Photo grid layouts for 2 to 9 pictures

Each photo count has its own set of templates: even grids for a tidy photo grid look, and “feature” layouts where one big photo leads and the rest support it. Pick one, then rearrange the photos inside it.

Add more than 9 photos and only the first 9 are used.

Make a collage for an Instagram post or story

For a feed post, choose 4:5: it takes up the most room in the feed, and at 1080 px it comes out at exactly 1080×1350. For a story, choose 9:16, which gives 1080×1920 at 1080 px. Keep faces and text away from the very top and bottom of a story collage, where the app places its own buttons, and away from the edges of a feed post, which the profile grid crops in its preview.

An Instagram collage with three or four photos usually reads better on a phone than nine small ones. If you want each photo as its own slide instead, size them one by one with the social media image resizer.

Make a photo collage on iPhone or Android

Open this page in Safari or Chrome and tap the drop zone to choose photos from your library. The layout, swapping and framing all work by touch: drag inside a cell to move the photo, drag it onto another cell to swap, and use the zoom slider for the selected cell. Export saves the collage to your Downloads, from where you can post it or add it to your photos.

On a computer, the keyboard works too: arrow keys move the photo in the focused cell, + and − zoom, [ and ] swap with the neighbouring cell, and 0 resets it.

Can you make a collage without an app or sign-up?

Yes, that is what this page is for. It runs entirely in your browser:

  • No account, no watermark. Open, build, export. The collage is yours as it is.
  • No upload. Family photos stay on your device; each one is decoded only as large as its cell needs, which keeps phones from running out of memory.
  • Print-ready sizes. 4096 px on the short side is about 35 cm (13.7 in) at 300 dpi.
  • JPG or PNG. JPG (saved at 92%) for sharing, PNG under Advanced settings for maximum quality.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Two photos in a simple row or column, or a long strip of screenshots? Combine images keeps every photo uncropped.

  • For a moving collage of photos with music, make a slideshow with the slideshow maker.

  • With Border at 0, rounded corners leave small specks of the border colour where cells meet; use a border of a few pixels, or set Corner radius to 0 for a gap-free photo grid.

  • Turn a collage into an animation by exporting several versions and joining them in the GIF maker.

  • Photos look more consistent side by side if they share a look: run them through photo filters with the same settings first.

Photo Grid / Collage Maker FAQ

How do I make a photo collage?

Add 2 to 9 photos, pick a layout and shape, drag the photos into the right cells and frame them, set the border and corners, then press Export collage. The download is a single JPG or PNG.

How do I make a collage for an Instagram story?

Choose the 9:16 shape. At the 1080 px size it is exactly 1080×1920, the story size, so it fills the screen without cropping.

How do I make a photo collage on iPhone?

Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone and pick your photos. Build the collage by touch and press Export collage; it is saved to Downloads, ready to share. No app is needed.

What size should a collage be for Instagram?

4:5 at 1080 px gives 1080×1350, the portrait post size; square 1:1 gives 1080×1080. Larger sizes also work, as Instagram scales them down.

Can I make a collage without an app or sign-up?

Yes. This collage maker runs in your browser with no account and no watermark, and your photos are never uploaded.

Can I add more than 9 photos?

Not to one collage. For more pictures, make two collages, or join any number of images in a row or column with combine images.

Are your photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Your photos are processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
