How it runs

Fill or Fit: what happens to a phone photo on each preset

Fill never adds bars but crops whatever does not match the platform’s shape; Fit never crops but adds bars. The table shows how much of an ordinary landscape phone photo (4:3) survives Fill, and how wide the bars are with Fit, for every preset in the list.

What size should Instagram posts be?

For the feed, the image size for an Instagram post in this tool is 1080×1350 for portrait (4:5) and 1080×1080 for square (1:1). Portrait takes up the most height in the feed, so it is the default. Stories use 1080×1920 (9:16).

The profile grid shows a cropped preview of each post, so keep faces and text away from the edges even when the full post is the right size. A carousel looks tidiest when every slide uses the same preset.

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?

A YouTube thumbnail is 1280×720 pixels (16:9) and must be under 2 MB. This resizer saves JPG by default, which keeps a thumbnail of that size far below the limit. Channel banners are a separate preset at 2560×1440; YouTube shows a different slice of the banner on TVs, computers and phones, so keep logos and text in the middle.

Resize a photo for Instagram without cropping

Pick the preset, then choose Fit (pad). The whole photo is scaled to fit inside the frame and the empty space is filled with the Padding colour: white by default, or any colour you choose, such as black for a cinematic look or a shade that matches the photo. This is also how to post a wide landscape photo as a 4:5 post or a 9:16 story without losing either side.

To choose exactly what is cut instead, frame the photo first with the image cropper at 4:5 or 9:16, then resize it here.

Do you need to resize photos for Instagram?

Not strictly: every platform scales what you upload. But each one crops to its own shapes, and its automatic crop may not be the one you want. Preparing the exact size first means you decide what is kept, text stays where you put it, and a batch of product photos or a carousel comes out consistent. It also keeps uploads small, which helps on slow connections.

  • Batch. One preset for a whole shoot, downloaded as one ZIP.
  • JPG by default. Smaller than PNG for photos; switch Save as to PNG or WebP under Advanced settings when you need to.
  • Private. Photos are resized by your browser; nothing is sent to a server, so unreleased product shots stay with you.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Need a size that is not in the list, such as a WhatsApp profile picture or a custom banner? Use the image resizer with exact pixels.

  • For a round profile photo, make it square here and then use circle crop for a transparent PNG.

  • Several photos in one post? Build a 4:5 or 9:16 layout with the collage maker.

  • Resizing video for Reels or Shorts instead? The vertical video converter does the same job for clips.

  • Text on your image? Keep it inside the middle 80% of the frame so feed and grid previews do not cut it off.

Image Resizer for Social Media FAQ

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?

1280×720 pixels in a 16:9 shape, and the file must be under 2 MB. Pick the YouTube thumbnail preset and keep the default JPG output to stay well under that.

What size should Instagram posts be?

1080×1350 for portrait posts, which take the most room in the feed, or 1080×1080 for square ones. Stories are 1080×1920. These are the presets in this tool, checked 2026-10-11.

How do I resize a photo for Instagram without cropping?

Choose the Instagram preset and set Fit to Fit (pad). The whole photo is kept and bars in your padding colour fill the rest of the frame.

How do I resize an image for an Instagram story?

Pick Instagram / Facebook Story (1080×1920). Fill crops a landscape photo to a tall slice from the centre; Fit keeps the whole photo with bars above and below.

Can I resize many photos for social media at once?

Yes. Drop them all, pick one preset and press Resize. Each photo is resized the same way and you can download them together as a ZIP.

What are the current social media image sizes?

The presets in this tool, checked 2026-10-11: Instagram portrait post 1080×1350, Instagram square post 1080×1080, Instagram / Facebook Story 1080×1920, YouTube thumbnail 1280×720, YouTube channel banner 2560×1440, X / Twitter post 1600×900, X / Twitter header 1500×500, Facebook cover 1640×624, LinkedIn post 1200×627, Pinterest pin 1000×1500, Link preview (Open Graph) 1200×630. Platforms revise their recommendations now and then, so check their help pages when a size really matters.

Are your photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Your photos are processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
