Add Text to Image
Add text to image files in your browser: a title on a thumbnail, a caption on a photo, a date on an event picture or a price on a product shot. Type the words, pick one of five fonts, a colour and a size, then drag the text where it belongs. The result has no watermark, and the photo never leaves your device.

- Width of the text as a share of the image width.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
- WebAssembly codecs
- Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.
Add text, watermark or meme: which tool fits
Three tools put words on a picture, each tuned for a different job. This one is for clear, solid text you want people to read; the watermark tool is for faint marks that protect a photo; the meme generator does the classic outlined captions at the top and bottom.
| Tool | Default look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Add text to image (this page) | One line, fully opaque, large, centred, soft shadow | Titles, captions, thumbnails, dates, prices, labels |
| Watermark photo | Small, 60% opacity, corner or tiled pattern, text or logo | Protecting and signing photos |
| Meme generator | Top and bottom captions in capitals with a black outline | Memes and reaction images |
| Add text to GIF and add text to video | Text on moving pictures | Animated captions and titles |
Size and placement of text on a photo
Type up to 120 characters in Text. Size sets how wide the text runs, as a share of the image width: the default 40% makes a bold headline, 15–20% a caption, and 60% a banner across the picture. On a wide, short image, very large text is limited to 40% of the image height so it always fits.
The text starts in the middle of the picture. Drag it on the preview to place it; it stays a little inside the edges so no letter is cut off. With several images, the same text goes on each one in the same relative position, which suits a series of thumbnails or slides.
Fonts and colours for text on an image
Inter and the heavy display face are built into the page, so they look the same on every device; serif, monospace and rounded use your system’s own version of that style.
| Font | Look | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy display (default) | Tall, condensed, very bold | Thumbnails, posters, short titles |
| Sans (Inter) | Clean, modern, bold | Captions, labels, dates |
| Serif | Classic, bookish | Quotes, invitations, book-style titles |
| Monospace | Even-width, technical | Codes, prices, timestamps |
| Rounded | Soft, friendly | Kids’ events, playful posts |
How to make text readable on a busy photo
Every letter gets a soft dark shadow, which keeps white text legible over light patches, but contrast still does most of the work. Place the text over the calmest part of the picture, such as sky, a wall or a dark area. Pick a colour that is clearly lighter or darker than what is behind it; bright yellow and white on dark scenes, black or navy on light ones.
If the whole picture is busy, darken it first with Brightness in photo filters so light text stands out, or crop to a calmer area with the image cropper before you write on the picture.
Add text to a photo on iPhone or Android
The markup tools in phone galleries can put text on one picture, with a small choice of fonts and sizes. For a thumbnail-style title, the same text on several pictures or a precise size, open this page in Safari or Chrome, pick the photos, type and drag with your finger, and download. Nothing to install, and no watermark is added.
- One line per pass. For a second line, such as a subtitle, run the finished image through again with the new text.
- GIFs stay animated. The text appears on every frame.
- Any output. Keep the input’s format or choose JPG, PNG or WebP under Advanced settings.
Tips & troubleshooting
Making a YouTube thumbnail? Resize it to the right shape first with the social media image resizer, then add the title.
Short words at a large size read better on phones than a long sentence at a small size.
For a subtle mark rather than a headline, lower Opacity under Advanced settings.
Keep your original: the text is part of the pixels in the saved copy and cannot be edited later.
Add Text to Image FAQ
How do I add text to a photo on iPhone?
Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone and choose the photo. Type your text, pick a font, colour and size, drag it into place and press Add. The edited photo is saved to Downloads.
How do I add text to an image without Photoshop?
Use this page in any browser: drop the image, type the text, style it and drag it where you want. It takes seconds and needs no software or account.
How do I make text readable on a busy photo?
Put it over the calmest area, choose a colour that contrasts strongly with the background, and keep it large. Every letter already has a soft shadow; darkening the photo slightly with photo filters helps too.
Can I add text without a watermark?
Yes. The only thing added to your picture is your own text. There is no ProMedia logo and no sign-up.
Can I add two lines of text?
Each pass adds one line. Add the first line, download the result, then drop it in again and add the second line in a different position or size.
Is your image uploaded anywhere?
No. Your image is processed by your own browser on your own device. There is no server that receives files, so nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. You can even switch to airplane mode once the page has loaded.
