Good to know
Settings explained
- Output format
- WebP and AVIF are typically 25–50% smaller than JPG at the same quality.
- Pixel size
- Some forms also ask for exact pixels (e.g. 200 × 230).
- Keep metadata (EXIF)
- Off removes camera details, dates and GPS location — safer when sharing. On keeps them.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- WebAssembly codecs
- Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
How the tool gets a photo under 100KB
At 100 KB many photos keep their full resolution: for images up to about 2 megapixels the tool lowers JPG quality first, down to 35%, and only then reduces pixels, while bigger photos that clearly cannot fit are scaled down up front. That favours detail, but on busy photos it can mean a fairly low quality. The table shows real results and the one setting that changes the trade-off.
| Starting image | Result | Pixels | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 MP photo (6000 × 4000), 881 KB | 92.3 KB | 1472 × 981 | JPG 69% |
| 1536 × 1024 photo, 337 KB | 95.1 KB | 1536 × 1024 (unchanged) | JPG 41% |
| 1122 × 1402 PNG photo, 2.0 MB | 95.9 KB | 1122 × 1402 (unchanged) | JPG 53% |
| Same PNG, Output format WebP | 94.3 KB | 1122 × 1402 (unchanged) | WebP 67% |
How to get an image under 100KB without losing quality
Decide what matters more: pixels or clean detail. If the form only shows the photo small, set Max width to 1280 or 1024 px before compressing. With fewer pixels to store, the tool can use a much higher JPG quality inside the same 100 KB, and the photo looks sharper at normal size. If the portal checks the resolution, leave the width alone and accept a slightly lower quality.
Already under 100 KB as a JPG? Then it is never made bigger: if a fresh copy at 92% would not be smaller, the original image data is kept and only its metadata is removed.
Which uploads ask for a 100 KB photo?
Job portals, visa and travel forms and university applications often use 100 KB as a photo limit, sometimes alongside a fixed pixel size. Their notices phrase it in different ways, such as “resize image to 100 KB”, “reduce image size to 100 KB” or “JPG under 100 KB”, but all of them check that the file is smaller than 100 KB. A 100 KB photo is generous compared with 20 or 50 KB limits, so the result can look close to the original.
How do I compress a PNG to 100KB?
Drop the PNG here and keep the output on JPG, which most forms want; a 2 MB PNG photo became a 95.9 KB JPG at full resolution in our test. If the site accepts WebP, choosing it under Output format gives better quality at the same size. If the PNG must stay a PNG, for example a logo with a transparent background, choose PNG output: the tool reduces colours and, if needed, dimensions until it fits. For PNG-only work with more control, use Compress PNG.
Reduce photo size to 100KB on a laptop or phone
One page works everywhere; only the file picker differs.
Laptop or desktop
Drag the photo onto the box in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, press Compress, and attach the file from Downloads. Its name ends in “-100kb”.
Android and iPhone
Tap the box, pick the photo from your gallery or library, press Compress and save the JPG. HEIC photos from an iPhone come out as JPG.
Why use this 100 KB compressor
- A hard ceiling: results land just under 100 KB, which passes both ways websites count kilobytes.
- Your choice of format: JPG by default, WebP, AVIF or PNG when the form allows it.
- Private: CV photos and visa pictures are processed on your device and never uploaded.
- Free, unlimited and watermark-free.
Tips & troubleshooting
Limit is lower, like 50 KB? Use compress image to 50KB. Higher, like 200 KB? Use compress image to 200KB.
Exact pixel size required, such as for a visa photo? Enter it under Pixel size; for country-specific framing use the passport photo maker.
Want to shrink many images without a fixed limit? The image compressor uses a quality slider instead.
